Well it bothers me that people want to spread rumors or say what they believe happeneded. And funny a lot of this crap gets started by people that aren't close to the program or the sport.
I agree with you, but with how much the US tends to discredit olympic sports against the sports with a professional league, I've learned to expect it. Especially when people say it should be eliminated.
There's a portion of our fanbase that won't be happy until the only sports we have are Football and Men's basketball.
So we can be middling in one sport and bad at the other, I guess? I am sorry, a losing conference record in football every year is not good.
Wrestling was our one feather in the ISU athletic cap. Now that it isn't, there are no feathers in said cap.
I remember my dad taking me to Cyclone wrestling duals, and when our team came out in their trademark robes and with their game faces on, it was quite a sight. I just want to get back to being a "bully" in wrestling again. Maybe it isn't possible, with all of the obstacles that have been listed here.
Funny you say that. Not bashing CF by any means but how many from the staff are down here at Des moines are reporting? Pretty annoying when people try to drag down the program like they have the last couple weeks and they don't follow wrestling at all.
He also made mention of not being ready and in the right frame of mind to be a head coach. I interpreted this from Cael. He wanted to be a coach and was looking into options, JP didn't want another Gable situation so Douglas "retired" and we gave the job to CS. He felt tremendous pressure from the start (replacing his mentor Douglas) and he wasn't ready to be a head coach at a major program. Later on he reached out to PSU so he could hit the reset button and be involved with a school that wanted to put a focus on wrestling.
Looking back on it now it would have probably been better to let him leave and cut his teeth with a different program and then bring him back when Bobby left on his own terms.
That being said, what done is done and KJ is our coach rebuilding a program.

Whether you, me or anyone else like it, it's about the money. I don't want wrestling eliminated but to expect the same, or even close to the same attention that MBB or FB get is ridiculous, especially at ISU where we are constantly spending just to keep pace in the sports that pay the bills. Quite frankly, there just isn't enough money to keep every sport up to the standards set by the elite. The WBB would be in the same situation, however they can share a facility which is great. Again, not saying I want it gone because I don't want that but maybe we have to live with not having the facilities and resources places like PSU has. It's easy for them because there is so much more money.
There used to be so much money at PSU. Their money is going to go out the window pretty fast to settle all of their lawsuits.
I'm not a wrestling fan but I don't hate the sport either. So those that think I shouldn't have an opinion because I don't follow it, you can just ignore this post. All I have to say is that it was about time we started focusing our budget on football. That is how our athletic department survives after all, and before JP it was neglected way too much. I have a friend who is a huge Iowa fan that said we should have paid Cael whatever it took to keep him here, but quite frankly we just don't have that in our budget.
I know for a fact that money wasn't reason for Cael initiating talks. I know the president of the Cyclone Wrestling Club and I know for a fact that JP showed no interest in keeping Cael here. JP is the one at fault here.
I know nothing about the situation but it is interesting that he is trying so hard to keep "perfect" coaches for our programs in CPR, CFH and CBF but did not want to keep Cael.
I agree. I know that there was something going on behind closed doors with JP and Cael and it didn't appear to be good.
I had the good fortune of interacting with Cael many times when we were both undergrads. Great dude. I was really hurt when he left but always had a feeling that if a guy like that left ISU it was for a good reason, I really don't think he'd just give us the big F-U which is what it felt like at the time.
I don't doubt that there was complacency from the AD regarding Cael but If I were an AD and I had to choose between focusing on football & basketball or wrestling at ISU I'd go with the revenue generator also. It's a ****ty time we live in with D-1 athletics and $$$. If I were Jamie I'd probably expect that there would be a lot of donors and former wrestlers to keep a storied program like ISU Wrestling strong.
It looks like PSU and their support system put up BIG for Cael. I'll always be cheering for PSU to beat Iowa and Nebraska and to win the B1G.
I'm amused at the attempts to place the blame for Cael leaving at the foot of the AD, when the simple reality is that there is only one person to blame for the golden boy's back-stabbing treachery.
I am seeing the word complacency thrown around a lot. Maybe that wasn't it. Maybe JP knew he couldn't keep Cael around. What I'm saying is that maybe Cael expressed a desire for more resources and JP, knowing he couldn't provide them, just kind of stepped away and said, either he is going to stay because this is ISU, or he won't, all while knowing he probably wouldn't. Instead of giving him a raise or stringing him along with minor upgrades, he just cut it off right there. By cut it off, I mean made it clear none of those things would be happening at the level Cael expected. I don't mean to say he shoved him out. I have no clue what actually happened but that makes sense to me. I don't remember that time period and what JP had to say but I also don't remember him saying anything like he said when Chizik left and if he didn't expect it I would have thought that he would have taken this much harder.
