Steele Jantz

Rhoads said today that in his press conference that, and I quote,

Um er, has a coach ever really called his QB play out after a game? yeah, no, he's going to sugar coat it. I would almost guarantee Steele was drilled and drilled on the mistakes he made, working on his touch with long passes, seeing the field better and picking up defenders. No way after that game CPR told the Offense "Hey, that was a great game and execution by you, keep doing exactly that and don't change anything".

After going 2-0 with one of those wins being on the road against an average to good Big10 team, you're sort of insane if you're even having a conversation about the #2 QB.

I'm not, people are assuming that's what anyone who is critical of SJ's play is saying. I like Steele, I want him to be good. I just feel he had a very bad game and really needs to step it up if we want to win in the Big 12.

Where you not around last year?

And if you watch the interview you can tell that Rhoads says it and he says it with confidence

Jantz is simply not a good QB. He has not been good since he set foot on campus. Hate to say it - we do have to pull out wins despite his play. It was the same way last year. The Tulsa game was not as great as people are making it. 70% of his throws were wide receiver screen/easy passes. We saw how he looks today when he has to make throws at the BCS level.

I am pretty sure that everyone on here but YOU would agree that without Jantz we dont win the first three games last year. All and all he has not lived up to the hype but to write him off and say that we have to pull out wins despite his play is absurd! The QB is the most important position in football. I think it is safe to say that he has performed o considering the playcalling that he has had to deal with (HERMAN) and the zone read inside the 5, geesh give it to Woody and let him Pound it in!

Jantz is playing good enough. He had a couple of bad turnovers in the redzone, sure, but he made enough plays to win with some help from the D. He's going to get a lot more reps against some cruddy defenses this year where he's probably going to need to help the D out by scoring more than 9 points. I am sure he's got better games coming than the last one. So do the rest of the Clones! Go State!

You are really not going to go there are you?? Do you really want to bring the UNI and UCONN games into this argument?

You apparently didn't watch the game Saturday. He did a very good job looking defenders off 75% of the time. He telegraphed a few passes and got hurt on those, but he did a very nice job going through his progression the majority of the time Saturday.

It's easy to cut under a receiver who waits for the ball instead of going and getting it. That's the most frustrating part of our receiving core: We wait for the ball to get to us instead of going and getting it. I understand they want to catch the ball 12 yards downfield on the run and break loose, but sometimes 10 yards and just catching the ball is enough. That and the majority of our receivers wanting to catch the ball on their pads instead of with their hands out front.
That is why Tiller is looking better and better.

Some people on this site need to play less NCAA 2012 so they can get real perspective on the game of football.

Hawks defense played a heck of a game. They dictated the play in the red-zone by completely killing the run game. Good for Mess to see now and walk out with ta win. Look for some new red-zone looks moving forward with a new OC.

JB is still better at running the zone read by making quicker decision. Yet SJ is a better thrower. A coaching decision.

No, I won't get over it or bury my head in the sand.

He may three crucial turnovers in the red zone. That makes for a bad performance.

Had he done other good things to offset its be a different opinion. We put up 9 pts against a horrible eiu team.

Just be honest, he played a bad game. There's nothing wrong with making that statement. It's not hating or calling for the backup. Just clearly stating reality and that he needs to improve if we want to win in the big 12.
Mike Vick had a similar game with 56 passes and 4 interceptions and a close win.

That's not the case at all. Some of the best plays we had this week were on the second or even third read. Thing is, much of the spread offense is based on the pre-snap read and throwing that right away, so it looks like it's the first read. It looked like the wind played some games with Jantz, both long balls he overthrew were with the wind, which could have been difficult to judge then. In both cases, since there was no safety help, I would have seen SJ air it out more and give the receiver a chance to adjust to it. I don't have a huge issue with the first interception either, the guy was open when the throw started, just didn't do a good job of shielding the defender and the defender was able to jump in front.

One thing Iowa did is a very good job of containing Jantz to the pocket. They seemed content to keep him in there rather than go for a big sack. They also had Morris spying on Jantz if he ever tried to scramble.
Watch the replay Mark. There were probably 3 times in the entire game he didn't throw it to his first option. He stares down one receiver right away, if that player isn't there he panics and usually makes a bad throw. He started off so well because his primary was getting open.

I've counted at least 5 times in the first half along where he's completed to someone other than the primary.

And BTW, the goal of pretty much all college quarterbacks is to throw to the first read if he's open. That's kinda the idea behind designing the play that way.

Iowa contained Steele in the pocket. If he can get out of it, he'll be even more dangerous. The replay shows he actually played pretty well other than the couple of terrible decisions. Those could have cost us big, and he's gotta learn. But he's not far off. I'm still sold on SJ.

Thats funny because I think there were three on the first drive alone that weren't to the primary...

I don't think anyone has said they should "keep doing exactly that & don't change anything"... Obviously there are adjustments & improvements that need to be made, but saying Steele had a "very bad game" is ridiculous, imho.

How often to QB's ever complete 100% or their passes and finish the season with 0 INT's while starting every game?

Even NFL QB's don't do that. INT's will happen - just have to get more TD's to offset them. Thank goodness we have an amazing defense to fall back on when mistakes happen. Honestly, this team is fairly balanced and just needs to keep working hard - they'll get their due. Steele will have good games and bad - hopefully more good, of course. But you can't expect perfection. Even RG3 threw some picks last year!

(No, i'm not comparing Steele to RG3 or any other NFL quality QB. Just making a point.)

Thats my point, Steele will make mistakes just like any other QB. So far, he hasn't made many mistakes. I still think he improves as the season goes on too.

I'm curious how you can tell who the primary receiver is? Just because he looks at one guy first doesn't mean it's the primary receiver. Also, the primary receiver can change based on the pre-snap read and/or what happens just after the snap. Without knowing the design of the play I'm not sure how you can tell who the primary is.
