Steele Jantz

I think all you guys that are talking about Jantz being horrible need to just go away. Yes, he had a couple bad plays, and I am sure that the coaches will work on this, but you have to give credit to Iowa and their defense for taking away the zone read running attack. I don't know if Iowa saw something that was tippin the play off or just had the defensive answer, but there was absolutely nothing for the RB or QB in the zone read in the second half.

I think after Jantz threw the second int the coaches told him to look at the primary receiver and then eat the ball if he is not open. On the play Horne was wide open he never even looked down field at all.

I said it after last weeks safety and I will say it again, this team need to be able to line up in the I formation in short yardage situations. From the 3 yard line you should be able to run QB sneeks and get in. That is the biggest mistake made by the coaches. Don't give teams a chance to catch you in the backfield! Yes, the exchange from Jantz to White was not good on the fumble, but there were 5 Iowa guys in the backfield when it happened.

Agree, agree, agree....

He was way, way off on all the long passes...including the one that worked out for us (the PI). He has a hell of an arm though...if he could dial in his timing he could be special.

The one to Bundrage would've been right on target if Bundrage wouldn't have stopped running on the play. We'll hit a few of those before the year is out, the timing just isn't there on both sides of the catch right now.

Steele needs to give up the football more and let our running backs do their ******* job. I was getting sick of him pulling it out. Anyway Steele is still the starter had ups and downs. Now lets focus on WI and not look ahead of this game.

Jantz is simply not a good QB. He has not been good since he set foot on campus. Hate to say it - we do have to pull out wins despite his play. It was the same way last year. The Tulsa game was not as great as people are making it. 70% of his throws were wide receiver screen/easy passes. We saw how he looks today when he has to make throws at the BCS level.

You have no clue! The playing calling in second half was horrible. Cant blame everything on Jantz, we lost momentum and the crowd became a factor.

2nd half play calling was awful. When you are three yards away from sealing the game RUN THE ******* BALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are going to throw, throw it to the TE or tall reciever on a fad route.

Jantz did awesome in the first half, but when we get into that red zone you have go to put points on the board preferably touchdowns. Those mistakes will get corrected when they watch some film this week.

If we dont turn the ball over 3 times in the redzone this thread wouldnt exist.

IF's are huge. If Iowa goes down and wins the game this thread wouldn't exist. IF we had played someone other than Iowa this thread would not exist. Like I said last week, "consistency" is what I'm looking for. It will keep us in the Big12 games. There's no way we play like that in the second half and win a conference game. Too many proven senior QB's with very good defenses and skill talent in our conference.

I think Steele played OK overall. What concerns me was our inability to run the ball this week. We are not a team that will stay in conference games throwing the ball. We have to run the football. All of those 3 and outs in the 2nd half would get us blown out in Big12 play. That's what needs correcting.

As for WIU, that's my alma mater. I'm just rooting for them not to give up 50. Go Cyclones / Fighting Leathernecks!

SJ was not my choice to play QB, but i thought he played well in the first game and for much of the Iowa game. My frustration with SJ is the silly turnovers, which he had two inside the 10. That being said i still think he has improved over last year and hopefully with time he will learn not to make those mistakes in the redzone, ISU should have won 30-6, instead they won 9-6.

If Woody was healthy, he would have ran the ball 3 times when ISU had the ball first and goal at the 2........the interception would have never happened. So SJ deserves an * by that INT.

Go clones and hoping for 3-0.

One of the things that Iowa pick up on is that Horne is SJ go to guy, which is good and bad. Horne is a good WR but when jantz is in trouble, he tries to force the ball to the Horne. The Iowa LB did a great job of baiting SJ on the pick in the endzone. He dropped off Horne for a second and then came back. Just something that he needs to learn.

Steele's biggest issue right now besides the horrible turnovers is he only looks at one receiver. He is obviously deciding who he is throwing to ahead of time and if that guy isn't open he gets uncomfortable in the pocket. Last year when he got uncomfortable he would scramble and make plays but this year he is refusing to do that. The few times he has checked down he has been successful but until he starts being able to read the defense and use the entire field he will struggle.

That's not the case at all. Some of the best plays we had this week were on the second or even third read. Thing is, much of the spread offense is based on the pre-snap read and throwing that right away, so it looks like it's the first read. It looked like the wind played some games with Jantz, both long balls he overthrew were with the wind, which could have been difficult to judge then. In both cases, since there was no safety help, I would have seen SJ air it out more and give the receiver a chance to adjust to it. I don't have a huge issue with the first interception either, the guy was open when the throw started, just didn't do a good job of shielding the defender and the defender was able to jump in front.

One thing Iowa did is a very good job of containing Jantz to the pocket. They seemed content to keep him in there rather than go for a big sack. They also had Morris spying on Jantz if he ever tried to scramble.

I think you're both right and that right there is the key to Steele's success/struggles. When he is doing well, he is checking down to the 2nd and 3rd receivers. When he starts to get rattled, he definitely locks on to one receiver, usually Horne.

You apparently didn't watch the game Saturday. He did a very good job looking defenders off 75% of the time. He telegraphed a few passes and got hurt on those, but he did a very nice job going through his progression the majority of the time Saturday.

It's easy to cut under a receiver who waits for the ball instead of going and getting it. That's the most frustrating part of our receiving core: We wait for the ball to get to us instead of going and getting it. I understand they want to catch the ball 12 yards downfield on the run and break loose, but sometimes 10 yards and just catching the ball is enough. That and the majority of our receivers wanting to catch the ball on their pads instead of with their hands out front.

Yep. Starting the game 11/11 on the road, against a decent Big 10 defense is the mark of a mid-major QB if ever there was one. [Jimlad implied] Even if he isn't a world beater, the differences between this year and last year are TREMENDOUS. Personally, I think he's about 75% of the way to being a truly exceptional player. The question is if the staff and team can provide the support he needs to do it.

Either way, he's the guy.

Some people on this site need to play less NCAA 2012 so they can get real perspective on the game of football.

Hawks defense played a heck of a game. They dictated the play in the red-zone by completely killing the run game. Good for Mess to see now and walk out with ta win. Look for some new red-zone looks moving forward with a new OC.

I do have a question for whoever explained the "Scrape-Exchange." (Too lazy to go back and find the quote).

1.) Thank you for the football insight. LOVE posts like that.
2.) If this is the case, is the answer to play-fake the read, then release the tight end into the hole behind the safety/LB who is spying the QB? Just curious since I love football, and love learning the X's and O's whenever possible, not having ever played myself.

Not only did the LB set up to poach that ball, if you watch the replay of that int play, the LB was somewhat hidden behind the ref. SJ might not have seen him behind the zebra stripes. Im not saying he doesnt deserve some of the blame, but I never thought that was solely his fault.

That's the biggest way to take advantage but usually the defense will catch on to the TE releasing. What you will usually see happening is the DE being blocked buy the tackle and the QB reading the LBer. When that happens and the LBer vacates the middle, you can hit some big runs where he used to be. The scrape works very well but you do open the middle of the field up and a good OC will take advantage of that.

I re-watched the game last night and this post is 100% correct. If Jantz can't find his primary guy, he always falls back to Horne. I'm not sure if it's because Aaron is getting open or if it's just a comfort thing but it's a problem if the defense is picking up on it.

His go-to-guy should quickly become Tiller. That guy is catching everything!
