First off, student attendance is 1000 times better than its been the past few seasons. Yes, it still isn't good. But the last couple years the lowest level of the CA sections would be half full for conference games. Now its always full and the rest of CA is 50% full at its worst. I always sit in the east side CA sections, so I can't really judge how full the balcony student section is, but I'd assume it's pretty empty most games.
But there are student attendance problems that need addressed. Clearly the AD and CA need to rethink how they market games to students, CA rules, and ticket policy. What they are doing isn't working.
Part of the problem they can't really do much about. Basketball just isn't all that popular. Just look at Duke's student attendance issues. Compared with football, there is a much smaller segment of students that are interested in going to basketball games.
Part of the problem will be fixed by winning more. We've sucked for so long that even with this great season, people haven't realized we're good at basketball now. I think us college sports addicted message board fans forget that most people don't know a whole lot about who is good and who isn't. A nice run in the NCAA's, where casual fans are paying more attention, could really help change that, as well as the high expectations for next season.
We also have issues with the students (or their parents) who buy the all-sports package at the start of the year, but don't care about anything other than football. I know somebody who has season basketball tickets, but has only gone to one game all year (Oklahoma). These are the people that cause us to sell out student tickets but have hundreds of open seats in the student section every game.
agreed time to abolish season tickets for students. game by game. sell off the rest.
If your goal is to cut down student attendance even more and bring down overall attendance, this is a brilliant plan.
