Yeah it's a damn shame if a quarterback isn't a starter as a freshman. It's just not fair to him. Time for him to pick up his ball and go home.
How can people seriously be saying this about the EIU program right now? After everything that has happened over there, why are we still surprised?
This would be like being surprised that CPR gets another conference upset win next year . . .
He should just go to Ohio state. Because we all heard urban Meyer wants to make him the next Tim Tebow. Derby is a pretty darn good athlete... But from what I've seen, the guy can't throw.

I gotta say UNI. With Rennie gone, I think he would have an excellent opportunity to play. I think with that linebacker mentality you would see a qb more like Fat Pat Grace. Hated the kid, but he was a bulldozer.
A few Iowa sports writers have said that Coffeyville Community College in Kansas may be where he ends up this year. He'd transfer there for a year, then be able to transfer back to FBS and not have to sit out.
I think this transfer is completely different from all the RB transfers. I would guess that Derby left in good standing despite his alcohol charge earlier this year. I could give a rip about stupid things like that, its not like he was driving, beating up someone, or selling drugs. I think this is just a case of a kid who chose Iowa over some big name schools expecting to play QB and ended up getting moved to LB. Cant blame him.

Why play Juco when you can play D1AA right away? I know a lot of Hawk and Cyclone fans both look down on UNI, but the truth is that they are a very good school that has sent quite a few players to the NFL in the past few years.
This would be my opinion as well. Yeah he'd have 2 years to play D1 but he still needs to find a school that he can win a starting job at.
If Derby wants to play QB in Kinnick, then UNI should be his first choice.
I'd like to know just how many scholarship players Iowa has on the roster right now. Attrition killed ISU for a good 5 year span. Based on the losses, they may be headed in that direction.

If you don't know the similarities between Gatens and Derby, and don't get the point that I made, than you aren't a Hawkeye fan.
He can play JUCO right away too. It's the smartest route for him. Go JUCO. Get some much needed playing action, see which schools want you, check out their depth chart and see which school fits you best, and make a decision
I think we have a better idea of what ISU's line will look like than Iowa's. We lost less starts, and KO was injured a fair share of last year. I realize that Ferentz is a great line coach, but 2 weeks into the season, when ISU and Iowa meet, I think ISU's O-line will be playing better.
I think most objective looking at who has what coming back would agree that on paper, ISU is a better team than Iowa next year. Iowa will still be favored due to the game being at Kinnick and the mysterious phenomena of Iowa's lines always being more skewed towards the Hawks than logic dictates.
This is probably the first time ever that I've thought ISU actually had a better team coming back than Iowa. I've rationalized predictions on ISU winning before, but its never based on ISU having a better team across the board.

I realize that he would be able to play no matter which route he took (FCS or JUCO), but I have got to believe that there would be a higher level of competition at an FCS school. FCS he would have two years of playing a higher level of competition rather than just one the JUCO route.
I think JUCO is almost one step back, one step forward, not really gaining anything. By the time he finishes JUCO, he isnt going to have those big name schools coming after him that he did coming out of high school unless he has Cam Newton type abilities.
But it does put him into a position of getting a crack at moving back to the FBS level, which may (or may not) be a goal of his.
I'm not sure about the rules, but can he transfer back up after a year of FCS?
