What are your ISU Football W-L Expectations now?

Sagarin ratings for last 5 yrs
ISU 2011- 2nd Iowa-48th
ISU 2010- 24th Iowa-49th
ISU 2009- 71st Iowa-41st
ISU 2008- 51st Iowa-63rd
ISU 2007- 20th Iowa-75th
Avg..........33.6...........55.2

Not top 20 year to year, but with the new Big 12 schedule it sure seems like that will be the case. 3 out of the last 5 yrs are top 25 schedules though.

Take out this year even, and ISU is still an AVG of 15 spots tougher in the schedule. The reality is, year to year, the Big ten is a weaker conference than the Big 12. It is much easier to get bowl eligible and occasionally have a great season in the Big 10 because the competition is worse and Iowa normally plays teams like Southeastern Louisiana Poly Tech A&M State.

I have respect for the way Kirk has been able to keep his coaches around for so long, because he is loyal to them and they are loyal to him. I do think he is WAY over-payed for the results on the field. Anytime he wins more than 7 games he gets an extension and a raise. That is why there is no chance in hell he leaves Iowa for the Chiefs or anywhere else. Nobody gets rewarded more for doing less in this profession.

2010 and 2009... compare them all you want, but Iowa gets knocked down because they play ISU and ISU gets knocked up because they play Iowa. So the reality is, you can't take those for what they say all the time. Don't act like you can automatically compare the two because they all play different non-conference schedule. Iowa beat the hell out of ISU 2 years in a row and ISU benefited in SOS because of Iowa's record. Please.

That is exactly why you can't take all that stuff into account. Records, SOS....none of that matter. Head to head matters. If ISU beats Iowa, they are better, when Iowa beats ISU, Iowa is better. Easy as pie.

Building takes longer when you actually play in a tough conference. I wouldn't expect you to know what it involves.

I would like to see us take the next step as a program in the next two seasons. That, IMO would be 8+ regular season wins and finishing in the top half of the B12.

I truly have no specific W-L expectations. I do not have delusions of grandeur. I expect a team that plays hard, doesn't beat itself and plays inspired, fun football. If that happens, wins and bowl trips will take care of themselves.

Jon I think part of the reason Iowa fans bring up the pay and KF is because he isnt willing to change anything and runs an affective but boaring game plan. He doesnt take risks. When Iowa is good and has the talent that is ok becuase they win games that way, but when they lack just a little bit of talent they struggle because of this. I really think the success of Iowa depends on who the QB is, just like most of college FB.

As for CPR his biggest asset is he takes risks and makes games exciting. You never know what he is going to do. He also game schemes D very well and is involved in all aspects of the game.

I really dont think you can compair the two since they are such different coaches. Maybe Iowa fans are getting nervious or jealous looking at what ISU has for a FB coach. Sorta like when Tom Davis was let go, ISU had a young up and comer coach that was making waves and Iowa fan wanted that. 12 years is a long time to be at any job, once people get on you bad side it is hard to get them back in good graces, I think that is where KF is. There are still enough fans that will support him.

The goal should be 7-9 wins a season. Those being satisfied with 5 or 6 aren't seeing any growth, but status quo in the program. I would expect to see slow, but continued growth to where we normally expect to see our worst being 6-6.

How long can you hang on to this pathetic excuse? You act like the b12 has always been this good, and always will be this good. I don't see OSU complaining about how hard it is.

This is America. If we want to hang onto an excuse, we're free to do it.

I think a person can reasonably argue that acknowledging the difficulty of the Big 12 doesn't necessarily equate to complaining. It can also reflect a sober assessment of the work it takes to build in a difficult conference. CPR notes it, but doesn't complain about it.

As for Okie State fans, I think they complain about it. If you read their board the night of the greatest victory in the history of football, many of them were convinced that this was their only shot to break through. Much of that stemmed from their perception of the difficult Big 12 schedule and opponents.

Noting it doesn't have to equal complaining. It's a tough situation. The fun part is that CPR seems to thrive on tough situations, and has embraced that challenge with a rare level of skill and passion.

Serious question then. How long is building mode?

For ISU? Perpetuity.

Regarding W-L, since you can go .500 and get to a bowl I'd say a bowl every year is a reasonable expectation. I want to see us going 3-0 OOC and beating everyone not named UT, OU, OSU often enough that we're getting to 7-8 wins every season. I don't want to ever lose to KU and honestly after the Crypt Keeper leaves and takes his black magic with him I don't expect to lose to KSU either.

At a program such as this I believe you should get 5-6 years to get all of your recruits solidly into the program. As much as it hurts to say this, at a lower-level bcs program such as ours you have to give a guy ample time to prove himself. His first three years have been far above what most people expected, mine included, so he deserves another 2-3 to take the next step. There has to be a solid foundation for a program to grow. I believe we now have a great foundation, but we can't expect this program to jump to 8 wins year in and year out...yet.

It also took OSU bout 6-8 years to build their program under Gundy.

Don't expect it to take that long, but who knows.

Fair enough.

Sometimes you never really reach "the top". Look at Iowa. Still can't make an effin Rose Bowl. And I say that seriously. You can be good and competitive, but there are only a true number of elite schools and it is tough to get over that hump. The only thing we can hope is they come back to us. Which is sorta happening.

Well you can note it. Fine. But do you really think it's been that hard through the years? (EDIT: comparable to this year after you lost CU and Nebraska)

The tough thing about the B12, that the B10 didn't have this year, is there are always a few top notch teams. Usually it is Oklahoma and Texas. It's not easy getting to their level and would be nearly impossible to pass them. In the B10 it was always OSU and Michigan. They both came back to the pack. Now it seems they are pressing to be very good again. And when that happens, I see very few chances for Iowa to win a Rose Bowl. Just like I still see very few chances for ISU to win the B12, but hopefully, with Rhoads, there will at least be chances.
