What are your ISU Football W-L Expectations now?

I would expect to see at least steady improvement year in and year out on all levels. I'm not sure how much WV pays their coach, but this is going to put CPR 9th in the Big 12 amongst salaries, with Bill Snyder nipping at his heals. The biggest thing is the length of the contract, which is huge, but from an annual compensation standpoint, this more or less is ISU catching up.

Good point. But I bet Rhoads is in the upper half if you count guaranteed dollars over the length of the contract.

Great to see CPR get this deal. I think its a good move for all involved.

I pose this question to you: What are your W-L expectations for ISU football, given this contract?

I am not one of those people that feels a coaches worth to a program is all about Wins. ISU had a .500 season this year and had the best attendance year in school history, seeing 50k or more people in the stands for every home game for the first time ever.

There is a GREAT deal of value in that for the athletic department, so I think this sort of contract is certainly in line.

However, one thing I have noticed with Kirk's increased salary, is that certain win totals which have in the past been acceptable, are no longer acceptable to a certain segment of the fanbase.

With these types of dollars, a certain segment of the fanbase will have a quicker trigger to be more critical...can't say how large that segment will be.

What are your thoughts?

I'd say if we can get to 7 wins a year consistently we would have one heck of a bargain. This is based on what Iowa is paying for Kirk.

Just what CPR preaches:

Continuous improvement. That may not always directly show up in the W-L due to SOS, but as long as we can see the program improving, i am happy.

I expect gradual improvement through the years. Although, it would be awesome if he built this program up like Mike Gundy has done at OSU.

Mike Gundy records through 7 years at OSU:
2005 - 4-7
2006 - 7-6
2007 - 7-6
2008 - 9-4
2009 - 9-4
2010 - 11-2
2011 - 11-1

Paul Rhoads through 3 years at ISU:
2009 - 7-6
2010 - 5-7
2011 - 6-6

This might be a pipe dream but if anyone can do this at Iowa State it is Paul RHOADS. (Spelled it right that time!)

My biggest gripe when Mac was still here was the not being competitive with the top teams in the league. This has already changed. If we have seasons like this year every year. I would be happier then I was with Mac here. That said I expect this team to continue to improve. I hope to see atleast 1 big 12 championship in that 10 years.

No change to my expectations. He's still near the bottom of the Big 12 in pay. If he keeps taking Iowa State to bowl games, he's still a bargain.

I agree. I don't think that anyone can complain about wins when you are paying your coach at the bottom of the conference. KU just gave Weis $2.5M, while probably still paying the past two coaches. Even Colorado State is paying $1.5M. I'll complain if CPR takes ISU to 3-9 or 4-8, but it will have nothing to do with his salary. He'd be underpaid (market-wise) still at that level.

CPR wants to win championships and I think if anyone can do it at ISU, he can. I will buy in for a Big XII championship in the next 10 years.

I do expect some hiccups along the way, but with his personality and drive he will continue to bring in better and better recruits who see what kind of person he is and will eschew name programs to be a part of his All-In spirit.

Yes, some fans will expect 10 Plus wins every year. Those will be the bandwagon fans who follow any team that is winning. Those of us who've seen the lean years in the past will fully appreciate all he does and will forgive after the disappointments.

No Team wins forever. Not ND, Not MIAMI, not USC, Not Texas, Not OK, Not Mich, Not FSU, Not Nebby, etc. There're always ups and down. If ISU gets to be in the "teams that matter" cycle for a couple of years or up to a decade CPR will be a legend at ISU forever.

My expectations are to compete for a bowl game year in and year out. That doesn't mean I expect Rhoads to go to 10 straight bowls but be competing for a stop year in and year out. Once every 3-4 years, I want us to win 8+ games. And maybe (fingers crossed), we can go for a 10 win season or 2 under Rhoads.
+1

If we can get to a situation where we are in divisions, I want to compete for that division title.
Also, I live in the 563, I want to see ISU on tv every weekend. With increased success comes increased exposure.

From wikipedia: On December 30, 2005, [T. Boone] Pickens made a $165 million gift to Oklahoma State University.

I really dont see the $$ value of the contract changing my expectations as much as the number of years that CPR runs the program.

Realistically I want Non-Bowl years to be the outliers. I could maybe accept a 4-5 win season once or twice every 10 yrs if the rest of the years are bowl games with some upper level bowls sprinkled in. A shot at a BCS game would be awesome.

I would be thrilled if we have an Earle Bruce.. 8 wins a season, but just can't seem to get the top dogs. That being said, I don't see why we can't become a national power under Rhoads.
He's laid the foundation!

5 wins low end but anything much than 7 with the new schedule is asking a lot.

I want to not get blown out much, sure every once in awhile it will happen. Feel like we have a chance every week especially when we play at home.

I won't be ****** with a 3 or 4 win season either if we are making progress.

In reality, this could have been a 2 or 3 win season as well if we don't win all those close games. OSU, Iowa, UCONN, UNI, KU....all of those could have went the other way. Hell we could be sitting here with 1 win and people would be ******. Those people would be idiots because they would be missing the obvious progress we are making.

Per USA Today Salary Database, ISU is now competitive in the Big 12.

Mack Brown- $5.2 mil
Bob Stoops- $4.1 mil
Gary Pinkel- $2.7 mil
Mike Sherman- $2.2 mil
Turner Gill- $2.1 mil
Mike Gundy- $2.1 mil
Tommy T.- $2.05 mil
Gary Patterson- $2.01 mil
Rhoads- $2.0 mil
Snyder- $1.9 mil
Art Briles- $1.6 mil
Dana Holgerson- $1.5 mil

Rhoads now moves to 32nd highest paid coach in FCS from 60th. Worth it...

Based upon those numbers, I just want us to be competitive in games. Avoid the 40-50 point blowouts. I care about that almost as much as Ws/Ls. I don't want to leave games at halftime...

My immediate expectation - he needs to elevate this program from a 6-7 wins/year to a 7-8 wins/year. Let's get there first because ISU hasn't been there since the Earle Bruce era. Once we get there, then we can start talking about 9 wins/year or more.

This is where I am at as well. ISU under Rhoads expects to win against ANY opponet it faces, period. The attitude change has been refreshing in these three years.

Now, with that being said, Rhoads wants more wins and bigger accolades for this school. We should not "dip" to the 4-8 - 5-7's anymore in the upcoming seasons IMO. We need to be consistent in making bowls and in the mix.... I want next year's and the following year's teams to be at the 7-8 win level and ever so inching our way forward to the 9-10 level in the next 5 years (especially if we get back to 12 teams). I expect it to happen under this guy. He has changed the school's and the fanbase's attitudes/mind set about winning and success. You can see it on our players faces and their attitudes on the field, they EXPECT to win, they didn't care who they were playing at the end of the year. ISU CAN become a major player in the Big 12.

It can happen. ISU just had the #2 Ranked sched. in the country and made a bowl game in the TOUGHEST conference in the land. (I still want the bowl game win, do not want to finish 6-7....we MUST win this game.) Still, that is a hell of a season, we as alumni/fans have appreciated the guy's hard work, and we all want more for ISU.

I expect more W's, bowl victories, more all-americans, and bigger and better things for ISU under CPR. He does too.

Go Cyclones!

Rumors that Briles new contract will pay him $2.5 Million

I expect a bowl game every year. 70 teams go each year and ISU should be one of them.

Isn't it ironic that a Hawk homer would come on here after our coach gets a raise and talk about win-loss expectations increasing because more money is being spent??

Your coach has the one of the highest salaries in college football and the W-L expectations are way too low in the Herkyhood, IMO.

What are your expectations of Ferentz, Jon? And if he isn't meeting them, what are you doing to help rile support to have him ousted??

Thanks for posting this. Not much difference between coaches unless you are talking about Stoops or Brown. CPR's contract is competitive.

Is there any place to get the cumulative figures for entire coaching staffs? Just curious if we pay our assistants on par with, say, Baylor, KSU, WVU, & TCU.
