Reception in IC..

I'll be testing this for the first time not being a student this year..

I agreed to take my grandfather to the game, who is a diehard Hawkeye fan and has two season tickets near the 50 a few rows back, but is getting too old to make the 2.5 hr trip to IA city by himself. I won't be doing any tailgating and will just be walking to and from the stadium. We'll see what happens.

In the past, I've always been in a a big group of Cyclone fans and we haven't had any issues other than the occasional boos and taunting back and forth, which I enjoy.

So your advice then would be to sink down to their "minority's" level and be as bad if not worse than the person in that minority, only to have the rest of Hawkdom not in the minority come in and defend the guy in the minority? Yeah, that seems like a great idea...

Well . .he can take his 200lbs . .6-1 frame . . and stand in front of the wimp and tell him to 'stand down' OR you are going to drag his skinny rear end to a security officer "right up there!" And then ask for some of those great hawk fans to help you!

How's that? Or is that just toooo aggressive for you girlie boys??

What the heck?!! Threatening my girlfriend??? R U Kidding Me??? Grow some gonads.

reality . . . too many in their "minority" . . way too many.

I told him to come up and try and do something about it.

I'm not going to swing first. Ever. I absolutely cannot get an assault charge in my line of work. I'll encourage someone to come after me if they want to fight, but I won't swing first. If they swing first, you have self defense.

Surely you have some nascar gear besides all the hawk clothes that they could wear.

Yeah, or maybe that shirt from Amazon with the three wolves?

Amazon.com: The Mountain Three Wolf Moon Short Sleeve Tee: Clothing

Just $11 and look at all the positive reviews! I guess the other option would be to cash in some of those Marlboro miles and buy the little tykes a nice windbreaker.

My advice to keokuk is go to a Drake football game. Cheaper, closer and you can wear all the hokeye gear you want.

Good enough for me. Unfortunately, we have a corporate mentality out there that is victimizing people who need to take care of themselves.

Remember "when seconds count . . cops are just minutes away!"

And what does sinking to that level prove? That you can be as big of a doosh as that guy? By taking your advice you end up turning one guy that wants a piece of you into 20 guys attempting to kick your ***, and, if you've been paying attention at all in this thread, it's your *** that ends up in the clink.

Perhaps you should stay out of the advice business.

Well . . some of us aren't stupid like you imply. Someone takes a swing at you . . with your girlfriend threatened you have a RIGHT to defend yourself unless you are a coward. Somehow, I think you have some fear issues about getting hurt and going to court to prove your case.

Like I say . . some of us have it and some of us don't. I chose not to be a victim or sheeple. I already know where you stand.

Except that's not what you're implying, because you called Al out for not assaulting the guy when he was only throwing words around.

Went twice...in 2000 and 2002 (two wins!) and won't go back. The first time wasn't as bad, we only had someone throw raw hamburger at us just for walking down the sidewalk in ISU gear. The second time, we had someone throw a full beer at us, which happened to hit a hawkeye fan passing by on the sidewalk. That drunk hawkeye fan then challenged me to a fight because somehow, I threw that beer. Boomerang beer? Just couldn't explain the laws of physics to him I guess.

Most of the encounters I had there were just verbal jabs, but both times, I ran into idiots who took it to another level. I have no desire to go back there...there's just nothing to gain. I'd rather follow ISU on a different road trip where I don't have to worry about crap like that. Conversely, the ISU/iowa games in Ames that I've been to recently had tailgates that were half and half fan-wise. No issues at all.

Been to several games there and my advice if you are wearing your ISU colors is find the lifelong older fans tailgating. GREAT people plain and simple. Iowa actually was known at one time as a very hospitable place for visiting teams to come and see and it's because of these people. In 2002 I came out decked in MSU gear(Spartan by marriage) and a bunch of idiot students were swearing and yelling stuff and as we were walking by some tailgaters when a group of 50+ year old Hawk fans invited us to hang out with them and have some food and drinks. The told us to ignore that section of fans that knows nothing of about Iowa football and they were glad we came. These are the same group that doesn't let that bogus number 9 ranking go to their head and they just take each game one at a time and enjoy it.
Oh, by the way, we finished that day by heading over to Ames and watched "The Run" by Seneca as we defeated Texas Tech. Two college games live in one day!!! If you haven't tried it, it's amazing. Of course I finished the day stopping in Tama and winning 300 bones at the Black Jack table!!!!!

This sounds about right, where are all these "physical" altercations taking place at anyway (ie. around the stadium, on Melrose walking to the stadium, etc..)? I haven't seen anything like what some of you "claim" happened to you, all I have ever seen or heard is a lot of verbal abuse, but if you just ignore it and keep walking you are fine.[/QUOTE]

One shouldn't have to "just ignore it." I wonder why all of YOU great hawksters . . N.E.V.E.R. seem to intervene . . and confront your OWN thugs??? Why??? Are you a coward or silent supporter . . laughing it all off?? Why not intervene?

You're right it is a Hawkeye problem, I have never heard **** from ISU fans when going to an Iowa/ISU game in Ames. Ignore it and keep walking always works, if ISU fans would intervene then maybe I wouldn't have to take the physical abuse in Ames. Why don't ISU fans intervene in Ames? Don't freakin act like Iowa City is the only place this happens at.

You're right it does happen in Ames. I was harassed by Iowa fans before and after the Iowa game in 07 and 09.

I've been spit on by drunken soho's, heckled by the toothless trash walking around outside of Kinnick, had food thrown at me, etc. Pretty much what you would expect from a gathering of knuckle draggers.

Not to make light of the situation, but that comment reminded me of The Magic Loogie episode from Seinfeld.

Thats pretty dead on. I remember in '05 when there was a large number of them in the middle of Welch chanting some pro Hawkeye ******** and picking fights.

You can take the Hawk fan out of the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer park out of the Hawk fan.

Is there a dillusionial emoticon?

Except that's not what you're implying, because you called Al out for not assaulting the guy when he was only throwing words around.

Obviously, you don't get it. Assault is when someone strikes you FIRST. And thanks for saying something I didn't tell him to do . . strike FIRST. Anything after the perps first swing is self defense . . which IS NOT A CRIME.

"Al" clarified his statement and I supported him for what he said/did. But if that hawkster little creep takes a swing, or throws something at your girlfriend (like that punk did to the ISU bandmember who ended up in the Emergency Room) . . THAT is ASSAULT. So now let me ask you a question . . if you are ASSAULTED (hit first) . . what are you going to do?? Let him continue to pummelt you until the Cops arrive? Or let the punk beat your girlfriend until the Cops or Security arrive?? You better nad up and forget who may hurt you or how this will look in court. Some of these punks will beat you senseless if you just stand there.

I used to think Minnesota-Wisconsin games could get bad, but when I came to Iowa, and went to my first Iowa-ISU game...and it was crazy.

I don't know about other schools, but one thing I did notice at Iowa was that for a lot of people, it seemed that the only way to enter the stadium was to be absolutely plastered. Usually before 10AM. Because, you know, nothing bad will ever come from that.

It's not like everyone in Iowa City is physically assaulting rival fans, but it DOES happen. I haven't seen it against Iowa State fans for 4 years, but last year I went to the Iowa/UNI game. There was a guy that kept threatening to kick my ***, and threatening my girlfriend because we were in UNI gear. I just laughed at him, and told him to come do something. I'm not a real big guy (6'1" 200lbs), but he was quite a bit smaller.

Eventually, some other Hawk fans noticed what an *** clown this guy was being, and called Kinnick security, who kicked him out.

The reality is that it's the minority of Iowa fans who act this way, but there's enough of these d-bags who act this way that I can totally understand and absolutely believe claims of abuse in Iowa City.

You changed your tune - AFTER Al put you in your place. Until then it was "How dare you not put someone in their place when they were just throwing words".

As far as the question of what would I do if I were in that situation - I would do what I had to do to the point that my wife was protected, and that doesn't mean putting my fist in the d-bag's face, as there's a lot you can do to subdue a drunk-off-*** ******* that doesn't involve risking an assault charge or turning one idiot looking to start a fight into 25 idiots looking to defend their "friend". Besides, when it comes to "throwing the fist in self defense," considering ICPD's history, who are they going to believe - the guy wearing the ISU shirt, or the 50+ guys wearing Iowa gear sticking up for the guy wearing the Iowa shirt.
