Reception in IC..

I was thinking about taking my kids to the ISU game last week but I was also worried about ISU fans response to me and my kids showing up wearing our Hawkeye gear. We live in Des Moines and the cost of going to the Hawkeye game is out of my range, but I wanted my kids to experience a collage football game just didn’t know how well we would be received. I root for ISU whenever they’re not playing the Hawkeyes, but all we have is Hawkeye garb. No offence but I really don’t want to go out and buy all new cloths for 4 kids.

I think there would always be heckling if you are wearing gear of a rival to a game at both stadiums. Minus this week I don't see it being a problem. But like somebody else said there are 95% of the people that are cool but there are always the 5% that are tools. Being with Kids and it not being a game against Iowa I think you wouldn't have to deal with much heckling. I think it would all be just some friendly ribbing.

I have an opportunity to buy a student ticket for the game...not quite sure what to do. Would love to be at the game, but don't want to die.

You have to be joking, right? Your kids have no clothes that aren't hawkeye related?

I will never step foot in that town again. While it is only 5% of the fans that will give you trouble, those 5% still come from the Hawkeye fan base. Just look at the new tailgating rules they had to implement to give you an idea of the overall fan base, and consider that most of them enjoy a tailgating style that resembles parking on someones lawn on the east side of Des Moines for the State Fair.

Are you telling me you have no clothes that aren't Hawkeye garb? Just wear neutral clothing, and no one will say a word. I'm sure you have something without the Tigerhawk on it.

Yeah, seriously. Just wear any non-football related clothes. Wearing Hawkeye gear to an ISU game other than the Iowa-Iowa State game is just asking to be heckled.

After the 2007 game I played the Iowa State fight song at every bar in Iowa City that had a jukebox (since they are all connected to online databases, you could download any college fight songs). I live in IC and usually don't wear my ISU gear if I am going to be going down to the ped mall except for this week. Wearing it in general is just being stupid and asking for some ******* to screw with you. I'd feel the same way if somebody walked around the ISU campus in Iowa gear. No need to hide your affiliation, but no need to make a big point about announcing it, either.

why would your children wear hawkeye gear to a cyclone game when the hawks arent playing? and you prolly would not have a problem anyway. iowa city is way worst then ames. i was at the game in 2002. i didnt have any problems then though; even went to a house party in iowa city afterwards with my cyclone gear without problem; haha. i sat in the cyclone section in 2002; top row in the endzone. if i went to the isu iowa game this year i would just wear neutral colors so i wouldnt have to deal with it; its not worth it to me.

Not a whole lot I’ve been indoctrinating my kids since they were born lol. I don’t know why but all of our worm weather cloths have Hawkeye emblems on them. We have some Keokuk Iowa High School Football champion hoodies other than that it’s all Hawkeyes. My biggest concern is my Van My daughter went out and bought Hawkeye stickers and put them all over the back of my Van. Don’t really want to come back to my car to find it vandalized. Not saying that would happen but I never realized how much ISU fans hated Iowa until I moved up here. I have always rooted for both. I guess I always considered myself an Iowan more than just a Hawkeye fan. Don’t get me wrong I want Iowa to beat ISU in to submission but after the ISU, Iowa game is over I root for ISU almost as hard as I root for Iowa.

Well yeah, a lot of people cheer for both. I live in Iowa City and even have season tickets for wrestling, but I only wear my ISU gear to the Iowa/Iowa State meet. The rest of the time I don't, because doing so is basically asking for a confrontation with some drunk *******. 99% of people will just shake their heads, but no reason to taunt that other 1%

I wouldn't really worry about having Hawkeye stickers on your windows though. Or if you are really concerned about it just tape a piece of paper over them after you park. Come to the game and have a great time. Heck, if you want to have some fun out of it, turn their sweatshirts inside out and make jokes about being embarrassed that Grandma is a Hawkeye fan or something.

Went in 2006 and it was worse than expected. Vowed to watch to it from home from that point on.

Before the game wasn't bad. Just a few competitive taunts that were in fairly good taste.

After the game was a different story. Had to walk, alone, two miles from Kinnick to where I was staying. It was pretty much hell. Ran into multiple 'tough guys' trying to impress friends and had a few objects tossed out of car windows in my direction.

The most vivid memory was this 45 year old guy sitting in the back seat of a small sedan that his 19 year old kid was driving, apparently too plastered to take the wheel. He rolls down the window, chucks a 3/4 full cup of beer at me and yells "F STATE!". Landed on the sidewalk right at my feet. I actually chuckled given how classless and pathetic it was.

I'd probably go back if I scored a free ticket or something crazy but staying close to home and watching the game with ISU friends is my preference. I would not discourage you from going and experiencing it yourself, though. It would definitely be worth it if we won.

I can't speak for the other thousands of fans, but if you happen to stumble by my tailgate, I'll toss you a beer.
I think the smack-talk is just good times, as long as both sides know it's just some friendly ribbing.

Flying beer cans (or anything heavier than a bean-bag) is just uncalled for as far as I'm concerned.

Ok...toss you a beer was a bad statement based on some of the previous posts. :)

I'll graciously let you partake in an adult beverage from our finest Coleman cooler. There...that's better.

You are far too nice, I am not sure if I can trust you.

My last two trips to Iowa City were brutal considering we lost both games and so the fans were in a feeding frenzy. I think it is so bad because you walk up through the residential area where many students live and have been drinking early. I have had beer cans thrown at me, verbalized while walking my father, nearly in fights both times... Their fans are so brutal I passed up on free tickets this year as it is not fun over there any more. I have two nieces in their 30's and one 8 year old going to the game this year. I have warned them about taking the 8 yearold and not sure if they will take her or not and I hope they don't. Drunk fans don't care... I know it must happen on both sides but have never seen it happen in Ames, however, I am sure it does however I would be embarassed.

Finally, what bothers me most about the Hawks, was the year I was at the game and they played Michigan and beat them (I was in neutral colors by the way). Many folks, not just students, boo'd Chandellor (sp?) 3/4 of the game. That's when I lost respect for much of their fan base. Their fan base boo's their players a lot.

My two cents

Surely you have some nascar gear besides all the hawk clothes that they could wear.

Heh...smart to be cautious. But I assure you, you'll be fine. I'll have a few ISU fans from Chicago at my tailgate as it is. Still probably a 10:1 Hawkeye-to-Cyclone fan ratio, but, you won't find our group being a bunch of jacka$$es and throwing stuff at you.

Re: Just curious...

but what is the hype that the Iowa team is creating about themselves? Iowa is ranked in the Top 10 not by Iowa fans, but by the pollsters. If the shoe were on the other foot, would you not be proud of that fact?

And yes, I would expect the Iowa crowd to be very vocal. I was shocked at how involved the fans were for Eastern Illinois, for a 11 a.m. kick. It will be a very good atmosphere Saturday.

So because the pollsters have generated hype this makes it ok to be a big jack###. This attitude is exactly what is wrong with most Iowa fans. When the team wins the fans let everyone know about it. When the team loses they are no where to be found. Need proof, see basketball.
