My thoughts exactly...

AMERICA NEEDS FARMERS Eye of the Storm

Great read. As an ISU alum, and the son of a farmer who is an ISU alum, the University of Iowa's use of this symbol has bordered on insult, in my humble opinion.

As much as it's worth, it's pretty much just tradition. Hayden Fry started it back when he was a coach, KF just brought it back the year we started to honor Fry (can't complain with the results). I really don't see why people need to get so upset at this. Is it one of those things where ISU really wishes they thought of this first?

My response would read exactly like the article.

The U of I has done nothing whatsoever for farmers or the agricultural business, unlilke ISU, which is one of the top agricultural institutions in the world. This was done to kiss *** and sucker unattached fans away, and it probably worked. Hayden Fry was very open about his desire to make ISU completely irrelevant and destroy it. This is just another part of that.

A pretty neat piece of marketing. Why not start our own, don't have an idea for it right now but there are some creative people that are ISU fans. Lets just come up with our own. Why let them out do us? The symbol could be added to helmets, jerseys, unforms etc, ISU goods for sale. Let's be proactive about this. Just need a few good minds.

If a sticker on a helmet personally offends you, you need to get your priorites straight. IMO. It's a sticker.

Besides, you're a law student at Drake, and you live in Beaverdale, so I'm guessing that your direct involvement in agriculture on any level is limited to buying sweet corn at the stand.

I'm not losing sleep over it or anything, but I think it's a low move.

In regards to your second comment, while I no longer work in agriculture on a regular basis, from the time I was 7 years old until I was about 22 I worked about 20 hrs/week during the school year, and 50 some hours a week during the summer farming. Agriculture was a huge part of my life experience, and has shaped me in a huge way. This fall, I only had class Monday-Wednesday. I probably put in 6 days this harvest on my family's farm. So **** you if you think that my involvement in agriculture is limited to buying sweet corn at the stand.

A low move? Last time I checked, Iowa City was still in Iowa. There's thousands of farmers that are Hawk fans. Why shouldn't Iowa be able to give a "shout out" to the farmers? Quit crying about it.

It is amazing the inferiority complex some of you Clones have. Wow. Crying over a logo now?
I'm so thankful that the majority of Cyclone fans I know are not this obsessed.

I know...I have sooooo many posts on this site(I saw a similar thread on HN and figured the Hawk signal was probably flying over here). Regardless, visiting this site and crying about another apparent conspiracy against ISU is hardly the same thing.

I'm glad somebody finally has the balls to say something about this. It has outraged me for a long time. Is there any chance we could win a court battle to get them to stop using the sticker? It should be an ISU thing, not an Iowa thing.

Besides, I think it's only fair for Iowa to get to use the ANF logo. Look what ISU has been doing for years and years. It's not bad enough you that your nickname is the Cyclones, but you also put a logo of it on your helmet and even this website. That is pure crap! Now it appears you care more than us for people who go through natural disasters. We're talking tornados, droughts, and floods. Iowa City has had all of these occur as well. And yet ISU tries to influence fans by trying to say they care more about these disasters than Iowa does. Why else would you use the logo if this weren't the case?

And you're making money off those logos. SHAME!!!

The closest thing pukeyes get to agriculture is playing Farmville on facebook.

What's funny to me is that the only time UI has a need for ag is when they can either make money off it or use it to sway some more trashy fans...fans who are too stupid to realize that others in their fanbase routinely make fun of farmers and agriculture. They love to bag on ISU as some hick college that is full of country music loving animal science students. Moo-U.

All of this while ISU has done a million times more for farmers in this state than UI. Not to mention ISU has educated more native Iowans than any school anywhere. People who get upset at the OP are probably ones who fall right in on the hok hypocrisy.

It sounds to me that some Cyclones are a little jealous of Iowa's good marketing skills. Iowa used the sticker to raise awareness of the struggling farmers during the 1980's. Now the tables are turned and Iowa's using the stickers to raise money for the university which is having budget cuts. I don't have a problem with it because farmers are in no way obligated to give money to them, its purely voluntary. If you think Iowa farmers are stupid enough to be duped into giving money to Iowa because of a sticker on their helmit than I'm afraid your the stupid one.

It ceased being a simple "shout out" when Iowa decided it wanted to make some money off the deal. This isn't just good ol' Iowa tipping their cap to those hard-working farmers. Stop being so damn naive.

Does that mean that if Iowa hadn't trademarked you'd be cool with it? Does it really bother you that much?
