Why is it assumed that Fred doesn't know any X and O's. They guy played more basketball than most people can even dream about. I am sure he picked up something over the 4 years of high school, 4 years of college, and 9 years in the NBA, it isn't like he is an idiot.

Alf should be a fair option as Alf and Hoiberg have the same level of coaching experience. :)

the fact that you question HCTMFH's abilty just makes me love the hire all the more.

Does anyone else think Bos and 22 are the same guy under 2 different logins?

One could argue that Hoiberg is a little more familiar with the game of basketball than Alf is...

While this doesn't translate to coaching ability, it should atleast translate with an idea of what the **** is going on

Though I very much like and trust Fred to do his very best to bring back the magic to Hilton, I feel it is going to be a job that he will need a few years to 'find his legs' in. I hope Fred lives up to everything that people have projected for him.

Now as for the guy who made this risky hire. Well, after his first few failures to hire a decent coach, he finally started listening to veteran ISU fans and alumni who steered him to good coaches. With the success of Paul Rhoads, JP now thinks that all it takes to hire a good coach at ISU is to hire an ISU Legacy player or coach. I'm still in favor of shipping JP off to rear-end kisser land, and hiring an A.D who knows what he's doing.

Good luck to Fred. If the coaching gig doesn't work, then maybe he can be the new A.D.

I don't think FH is going to underestimate what type of player to recruit. That alone is an upgrade.

Meh, not really - just the fact that Bos is Greek automatically means he has more hair than 22 (who, when last time I met him, could land a 747 with the light that reflected off his shaved head).

Yeah, but I remember Alf saying that they played a similar game on Melmac, with the main difference being they shot cats into kettles of boiling water...

Men's Basketball: Iowa State's Hoiberg prepared to be coach - Omaha.com

The former Cyclone basketball player studied NBA coach Larry Brown as an Indiana Pacers rookie. He watched Larry Bird. He even followed college coaches — not just the players — when he was scouting as an NBA executive with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Now, after gathering all of that information on coaching for 15 years, he'll get to put it to use as the ISU men's basketball coach. Hoiberg was introduced at a press conference Wednesday.
“I've put all that up here in the memory bank, and I've written a lot of that down,” Hoiberg said.

McD keeps old aid DeVries that recruited his boy recently:
http://www.omaha.com/article/20100428/BLUEJAYS/704289775/-1#mcdermott-keeps-devries-as-cu-aide

McDermott and DeVries have known each other since McDermott tried to recruit DeVries, then a junior at Iowa’s Aplington High School in 1992. At the time, McDermott was an assistant coach at North Dakota.
“I’ve known Darian a long, long time,” McDermott said. “He tried to recruit my son. I’m excited he’s joining our staff.”

Hoiberg wants to hire someone with previous head-coaching experience to help him adjust to life on the bench. In fact, Hoiberg, with Floyd's help, already has a list of potential coaches written out.
It's things like this that have moved me to "guardedly optimistic" about FH's hire. While it still appears to be a desperate hire, it also appears that FH, even though he has not had any coaching experience, has been planning this out for years, and it appears everything has been well thought-out and extremely calculated.
