Victory song?

So I think we have come to a conclusion that pregame isn't the place for Bells, I would agree. However it is played after every game win or lose, that being said it is the last thing played before the band leaves and everyone is gone by that point. IMO we should move it up to after whatever we come up with as a victory song and the team should stay out and sing it along with everyone else. I know a lot of other schools already do this but idc it shows unity and that your putting the school first and I think speaks volumes of what the team, fans, and supporters feel about the school.

Pregame IS the place for bells. EVERYONE plays their alma maters during pregame.

Dont disagree that it might be nice to have more involvement with it at the end, but it should not, and *will not* be cut from pregame.

While we're at it, I'll throw my two cents in.

Let's kill off For I, For S because it has the worst lyrics known to mankind and bring back Rise Sons.

I WISH more people besides the band and the old timers knew the words to Bells. It's a beautiful song.

Oh Al. :frown:

And you fail me too, superfan?

Bells is the Alma Mater, a song or hymn about the school. It's not meant to be a pep song. Maybe pregame isn't the most desirable place for it during the game, but hardly anyone sticks around to hear it after the game. I really wish it was taught like the fight song is (kind of), it's a beautiful song. Heck, even my 4yo requests Bells (and knows all the words, booyah) as one of his bedtime songs.

Yes, VMB - a good chunk of it was in jest. I won't claim to be a fan of Bells, but I do wish it could be updated. It fits in to those Iowa stereotypes - nothing here but hills (not many) and bells.

Many of the issues would be fixed if it was better-known. Now it seems like only those connected to the band and die-hards care. Nobody else seems to give a damn.

The only thing I'd point out with this is the Kansas Wizard of Oz connection. Does anyone play Hair of the Dog on a stop?

Yeah, but you're not in Kansas anymore.

blasphemy!!!!!

C'mon, seriously?

For "I" for "S" forever.
For Iowa state all the way,
Let's go! To show them that the gang's all here for
Go! To show them how the Cyclones cheer
For "I for "S" forever
For Iowa State do it right!
It's time to climb up on the victory wagon
Fight! Iowa State! Fight! Fight!

I don't even think I really need to say anything else.

That seems like a typical fight song to me...

Just a question but has anyone ever asked JP his thoughts or given him any suggestions on this topic? Just trying to get some insight into his thought process on this.

I think we need to come up with a good plan then everyone e-mail him, why waste our time coming up with ideas if it's not going to be communicated to the decision makers.

It's just so...1950s.....

I dunno, it seems to me like it's more cliche and, well, awful than most. I mean it has gems like "the gang's all here for", and "climb up on the victory wagon". And it's like Mr. Wilson couldn't come up with lyrics to fit the melody he came up with, so he just stuck the word 'Fight' in there enough times to make it work.

And I also think that right after Kickoff is week too. The entire crowd...right after the kick needs to scream/yell: CY - CLONES! Right now we all chant the "ohhh" then....nothing. It is boring. This needs to be changed as well.

Examples:

Notre Dame - "Ohhhhh....... I - RISH!" Sounds awesome.

Oklahoma - "Ohhhhhhhh....... U!" Pretty cool.

Why can't we train ourselves to say CY - CLONES! Put it up on the damn video board if it is tough for people at first.

I really like this idea and the wicked witch music after 3rd down stops (including video from movie) - if we could just get these two things done this year that would be great!:yes:

Are most of you aware that just about everyone plays their alma maters (which are almost always slow\emotional pieces like ours) at their pregames? Its a traditional piece. Funny how yall are talking about creating a tradition while tearing down one we do have.

Also, please, no country. We already have enough of the country thinking we all drove our tractors to the stadium (even though a huge number of us never lived in the country- and becoming moreso every year). Lets not play into the stereotype.

I want to avoid "dumb redneck" as much as the next guy, but bottom line is ISU is an agricultural school in a rural state. I would bet far more of us have rural ties of some sort than don't, and I think we should embrace it, rather than run from it. Besides, a post game, fun victory song should be just that- FUN. While I agree that you have to stay away from Toby Keith kind of stuff, classic country standards are totally fair game. What I like about "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" is that it's not as stupid as something like "She Thinks my Tractor's Sexy", but it embraces the rural thing.

Yes! I brought up this exact point in a thread a while back. I would love to see this tradition get started at ISU. While in theory I like the idea of the band playing the Alma Mater last before they leave the stadium, what is the point if nobody is around to hear it? At the end of the game, play fights, a potential "victory song" and then Bells. Have the football team join the student section and sing it after every game. You see this on TV a lot with many many schools, and every time I see it I think it is just really cool. I think the showing of tradition and unity and loyalty that comes from that is just everything that makes college football what it is. I have no idea why we have never done it here. We have a great alma mater, and the fact that it has some sort of second class status with our fanbase is a shame. This should be taught to all the Freshman at Destination ISU right after they learn Fights, and it should be a part of every Cyclone football game, win or lose.

I will somewhat agree that it really does kill the momentum of pregame, but I don't think that is a fault of the song or the band, it is a fault of the fanbase. If people would embrace it and sing it and make something of it other than an awkward time of silence before the national anthem, it wouldn't seem so out of place. As larson has pointed out, most schools include this in their pregame shows, and I assure you their songs aren't much different than ours.

Well you see the thing with traditions...if they are good enough, they usually stick around for quite awhile.

Two things need to happen:

(1) Win more games
(2) Fans stick around until the end of the game, win or lose

It's already been mentioned, but for hoops the order is:
*Fights
*Celebration
*Looney Tunes bump
*Pffft, You Were Gone

For football, it seems to be:
*Fights (as everybody leaves)
*Maybe 1-2 songs from the repertoire (in case somebody is still hanging around)
*Bells (everybody's already gone)

Well you see the thing with traditions...if they are good enough, they usually stick around for quite awhile.

Except it isn't a tradition--that song disappeared at some point after it was written (I have family members in band in the 70s that knew of but didn't play it), but got brought back when it was decided that Rise Sons is sexist. Which it is, but so is Fights (and why couldn't we just play it at men's events?).

This is already pretty much the order. Everyone is in a big snit to leave as soon as the clock hits :00 (or before), so by the time the first two songs are played, the only people left in the stadium are the band and the cleanup crew.
