McDermott vs. Jacobsen

I understand wanting to look for some reason to have hope for us next year...we are all trying to do that.

However, it seems pretty clear that bringing the mid major model of program development to a high major program does not yield the same success in both settings. You simply have got to have the requisite athleticism in a conference like the Big 12 to compete. All of this talk of us being better next year because our two best players have left is really crazy in my opinion.

Some coaches understand these concepts and they are able to adapt their recruiting and coaching styles as they climb the ladder to fit their situation (see Urban Meyer) and some coaches just don't get it (see the MBB coaches at ISU and Iowa this past year).

Two best players, or two best athletes?

Grow up or shut up!!!!!!!!! He left for a new challenge just like anyone would do...not to mention the money a bigger school can pay. He had no control over Johnson leaving period. I will not post to you if you can't offer up facts for your opinions

Not sure what kind of facts you are looking for...I was simply stating that I think McDermott might be doing a little bit of second guessing this March. He's seeing some of his ex players and a former assitant of his have a great deal of success, lead largely by the players he recruited, running the same system he installed.

Do I think he feels good for them? Sure. But I also think that he probably has to be playing the "what-if" game in his mind.

Sorry my post lacks the requisite facts that you seem to require, but really all I am discussing is a guess at what McDermott is thinking. I haven't had the chance to discuss the issue with him, and I don't know the interworkings of his mind...so I guess I have no idea what kind of facts you're looking for.

But feel free to ignore my posts if you so chose, I generally don't get too worked up over someone who includes nine exclamation points in one post critiquing my ability to form an opinion.

It is really amazing how fine a line there is between goat and hero. If Ali misses that shot there would be a group of people saying that is Jacobsen's fault and he has to have better control over his players. Also they would be blaming him for ******* away a win because they weren't prepared for the press. Very fine line between Jacobsen looking like a genius and looking like he choked.

UNI shot 40% - forty percent - for the game. To beat a team like Kansas while not shooting very well speaks to the grit and determination of the team. The foundation for that in any team is the coach.

I thought the same thing. He misses that shot, he is an idiot. He'd missed 6 in a row, full shot clock...basically he panicked. He makes it, he has ice in his veins, made of steel, ect. Basketball is crazy like that!

No doubt about that. Having done some coaching I would bet Jacobsen was yelling "NO, NO, NO....YES!" as that kid took that shot at the end of the game.

I did like his line saying that as long as you play defense the way you are supposed to, you are allowed to take the shots that you think are best for the team.

Now whether or not it works exactly like that is another story!

I don't think our guys were selfish. They just weren't terribly disciplined or cohesive on the court.

edit: They also lacked basketball IQ. So many bad shots and bad fouls and often out of position defensively..

I don't disagree---BUT there were two games where we won and made runs with Brackins on the bench. ---THERE I SAID IT.

See my reference to graduating from jr. high "Rural". To everyone else, I appreciate the level of good conversation and demeanor....thanks

Yeah, what I posted is ultra-offensive. What a flippin' wimp.

And I thought you didn't understand. You are right----no one cares what you think McDermott is thinking

And you may very well be right. But it sure looked pretty dang good being executed properly against the #1 team in the land yesterday...

UNI played a masterful game. But it was just one game in a tournament where both teams had little time to prepare for each other. How this "system" would fare in the Big 12, where teams see it night in and night out and have time to prepare for it is a completely different story. So far, the McDermott version has been a dismal failure in the Big 12 for the most part.

Watching some of games this weekend has been very sobering with regards to how far ISU is away from being a top 25 team...shooting guards with ice water in the veins...physical post play where guys can power in and score...pounding the boards...guards who can drive to the hole and finish or get to the line, or dish off to someone cutting to the hoop...ISU just doesn't have any of that.

And the whole playing as a team on both ends of the floor. The advancing teams play together. We didn't grasp that.

UNI has been playing better in tournaments then they played in the regular season. They were an average three point shooting team during the season and have stepped it up in the post season. Ali made a ballsy shot that if he would have missed people all over the state would have probably been blaming him for the loss. They have stepped up their defense even more. They have never been a very good shooting team. Kansas was the number one three point shooting team in the country and only shot 27% for the game and a lot of the looks were open looks. KU had many unforced turnovers. It was just one game. UNI has been hot lately and KU played tight in both of their tournament games. I don't think you can take to much out of the game. I mean KU almost won it when they finally starting to turn up the defensive pressure. I think if Self had it to do over again he would have started by pressing and it would have probably been a twenty point win for Kansas. but that is why the tournament is so great. the better team does not always win.

Oh yeah, and freakin sloth from goonies made two three pointers. UNI also had some luck on their side that night
