Congratulations

I was cheering for UNI. Part of it was because they were an Iowa team, although I wouldn't root for the hawkeyes. The other part is because I hate Kansas.

good thing you substantiated that claim :jimlad:

Okay, here's a way bigger upset...Do you know why the Maui Invitational exists and why Chaminade plays in it?

Because in 1983 #1 ranked Virginia traveled preseason to Hawaii to play NAIA school Chaminade who didn't even have its own court I believe. Chaminade won the game. Virginia had 3 time college player of the year Ralph Sampson (7'3" height too).

Virginia went on to the Elite 8 that year, where they lost by 1 to NC State...who ended up winning the national championship.

It is widely regarded as the greatest college basketball upset ever. UNI over Kansas doesn't even come close.

Um, Iowa State was part of an even bigger upset, but let's not talk about that.

No, Iowa State wasn't the clear favorite to win the national title game.

Tiny Chaminade pulled the upset of the ages by beating No. - 01.10.83 - SI Vault

A preseason tournament doesn't classify as the greatest upset ever. That game wasn't in the NCAA tournament. If its not on the biggest stage in college sports, its not that great.

You saying that the Virginia game is the biggest upset ever is like saying the US beating number 1 spain last summer in South Africa is the biggest US soccer win ever. It wasn't in the on the greatest stage, the world cup, so it wasn't the biggest win.

Sports Illustrated isn't the end all be all.

Um, a 15 seed knocking out a 2 seed has happened 4 times. In 2004 alone, 2 9 seeds took out 1 seeds. In 2002, UCLA did it as the 8. In 2000, 2 8 seeds knocked out 1 seeds. That more times in the last 10 years an 8/9 has taken out a 1 seed than 25 years a 15 has knocked out a 2.

This OP really doesn't know the difference between ISU and UNI. What a dumb pile of ****.

unforunately we are a long way away from uni. the way they play defense is tremendous. kansas lights us up for 90 pts pretty easily, but they way every single one of uni's players moves their feet to get into position is incredible. also, their help defense and rotations are quick and well executed. and it is not like uni has great athletes. they're just hard nosed and disciplined.

You hit it on the head. It's obvious that no UNI player is allowed any excuse for a defensive lapse. If a player gets beat on a play, so be it, but there is almost always help, and no one takes a play off. They are in the face of the opponent all the time.

I too was cheering for UNI. My second favorite team is whoever plays KU. I even found myself cheering for Iowa when they played KU a few years ago. The one exception comes when they are playing Roy's Boys.

1) This wasn't in a preseason tournament.

2) State it to the countless publications such as Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, etc which have this listed this as the greatest upset ever in college basketball.

3) Your original statement said "greatest upset ever?" Next time, how about you qualify what you mean ever? You never qualified it to mean just in the NCAA tournament or "on a big stage."

Sports Illustrated is not the only publication that lists it as the "greatest upset in college basketball history"...you'll actually be hard pressed to find many publications that DONT list it as such.

4) Going back to your original question, no, even if we're talking about just the NCAA tournament..no, this was not the greatest upset ever. 9's beat 1's every once in awhile. Any 15 beating a 2, which has happened four times, is a much bigger upset than this.

9's or 8's beat #1's all the time...a 15 seed has only won 4 times.

And they expect to win. Times get tough, they don't mind. They just always expect that they are going to win.

I wonder if UNI inspired Wake a little. I didn't think they could hang with Kentucky for long.

I agree with Doyel -this ranks up there with George Mason over UConn.
It's much bigger than Villanova-Georgetown 1985 - those teams played two very close games during the regular season, one went into OT.

I'll agree with that. Maybe it does rank up there, but I wouldn't call it "the greatest ever."
