I know there is a lot of speculation out there right now as to what is going to happen with possible Big 10 and Pac 10 expansion. Some people think that nothing big will happen, such as the Big 10 expanding to 14 or even 16 teams, or that the Pac 10 will add a significant amount. But sometimes where there is smoke there is fire. My theory is that the conferences now are in a race to survive, and in reality become king. The Big Ten network has proven genius, and raised the bar for the revenue a conference can bring in.
That being said, is the Big 12 really in trouble? With talk that Texas, Missouri, and Colorado may all be gone, is the Big 12 really all that much better than a Mid-Major conference? Yes there is still Oklahoma and Nebraska (sort of) in football, and of course Kansas in basketball. But really losing those schools really drops the appeal of the Big 12. Adding schools like TCU, Utah, and Arkansas would not come close to filling the void. I would think that if those schools left, other Big 12 schools would soon follow suit.
I know the subject has been talked about a lot lately, but what really does happen to ISU. To me, we would become even more of an afterthought to the conference if those schools left, as almost certainly all the schools that were added would be either from Texas, out west, or at the very least south. I don't see anyone "close" to us like Missouri that would be added. It would make recruiting tougher, and would make it even harder for the fanbase to travel.
Not trying to be a downer, but I really would be concerned about where we would end up, or how we would do in a revamped Big 12. Where would we fit in? I would hate joining the MAC, and I just don't think we would be invited into the Big 10 (11, 14, 16 or whatever)
