Veterinarian suicide rates

i was alarmed to run across a story based on these findings.

https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2018/p1220-veterinarians-suicide.html

Given Iowa state's stature in vet med, any thoughts from people?

The study is the first to show increased suicide mortality among female veterinarians. Female veterinarians were 3.5 times as likely, and male veterinarians were 2.1 times as likely, to die from suicide as the general population. Seventy-five percent of the veterinarians who died by suicide worked in a small animal practice.

On That Note: To the 9’s (part 2) 1979

As previously covered in the heads up post yesterday, this week's OTN is a continuation of the Decades series started last week by @cyclones500. Also a regular posting member of the staff of OTN is @CycloneRulzzz.

So pick your favorite LP's released in 1979 and give us your reasons or history with the album and post away!

(Last Week's thread can be found here: https://cyclonefanatic.com/forum/threads/on-that-note-to-the-9’s-part-1-1969-and-’59.248795/

My first Offering:

Armed Forces - Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Probably not his best album. Thematically it just doesn't hold together for me. That said, an average EC album is still pretty great in this period.

Best Cut is probably - Party Girl. Great Lyrics!

Leaf Guard

Going to be in the market for new gutters on my house. Does anyone have experience with the Leaf Guard products? Do the leaves still get caught on top of the Leaf Guard or do they easily blow off? Are they truly effective, or would I still have to go up and clean the gutters a couple times a year? My backyard has a number of trees, and some younger maples that are continuing to grow, so I definitely have that exposure.
Thanks!

I ran into Austin Macbeth in STL

I was at a park in St Louis over the holiday weekend and struck up conversation with a guy in an ISU shirt. He explained he is coaching football at a smaller school in MO. Eventually he tells me who he is. Super great guy. I did not remember he started off playing basketball and then went over to compete for QB, backing up Arnaud and Tiller. Austin M is a really engaging guy. He is really high on Campbell and the staff and agreed how special the program is. I told him I thought the 'culture change' and all the talk was the real deal- not cliche- because of how truly invested CMC and staff are in the kids. You just can't fake that sniff test. Most coaches have so much ego and don't have the big picture that CMC has. I wish I had the presence of mind to ask him some X and O questions. (e.g. I thought at times last year CMC was a little too conservative and 'stick to game-plan' mentality with play-calling.)

We also talked basketball and he told me that Michael Porter Jr is the player that he is really excited about, that he may actually be the once in a generation type talent more than ZW who is untested as a shooter. Was news to me.

Medical history

I had to take my older brother to the hospital tonight, he was driving by, and was feeling light headed. He said that he had fallen earlier in the day, went to the hospital, they did a CAT scan and he was now feeling worse. He thought he was having another stroke, had one 5 years before, but luckily, he was just dehydrated. The local EM wanted his complete medical history, and I know very little about it, which brings me to question. How is it that I can walk into a car dealer and they can run a complete financial history on me, give me a credit score to get approved for a loan, in a matter of minutes. But we do not have a system set up to do the same thing for our medical history. I give them my name, SS number, address and a hospital or clinic logs into the system, they see a current photo off my license or passport, with all the relative information, and medical history, meds I am on and so forth.

OTN Heads Up - This Week - Your Top Album(s) of 1979

This week @cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz and I will continue OTN's annual series focused on top albums from years past, in decade increments.

This year's theme is "To the 9's" ... Week 1 was last week and covered both 1959 and 1969.

This week we will be covering 1979

Additional segments will follow with, '89 and '99.

We want to give advance notice to allow time to contemplate and compile.

Please Do Not Post any of your choices in this thread.

We'll start the official thread late Tomorrow night, as is the custom.

Thanks. ... Start your research. :)

Highly Scientific Marshmallow Poll

Perfect off-season **** post about marshmallow doneness to follow. We just went camping with 25+ people so we got a pretty good discussion going around the campfire one night about the perfect roasted marshmallow. I'm a solid 5-6 honed after two summers as a camp counselor and frequent camper as an adult.

People that catch marshmallows on fire will be judged harshly in the next life.

Coaches who bully and harass kids

Hey I was just looking for some advice on a situation that I hoped that my family would not have to experience.

My 13 year old was on a travel baseball team this year for the 3rd year in a row and this is a team I have coached the past 2 years and handed it over to another guy who really wanted to do it who had helped me coach for the 1st 2 years.

Long story short he picked on my son all season. We documented all things he has said to him from he is too slow not good enough doesn’t have a good enough arm. Stuff beyond hard coaching. I am fine with motivational tactics but not so much with extra stuff like this.

The thing is this guy seems to hate me for whatever reason. He got into my face during a game last year because I coached the pitchers and they weren’t throwing enough strikes. I should have known better than to have my son play for him.

My wife initially talked to him, it didn’t stop, I talked to him and then had the owners of the club we play out of talk to him. Multiple parents have reported him to the club. Now there is a new owner of the club and we have been in touch with what had occurred. She is goin got get his side of the story. We aren’t going back to this team but tbh I don’t want him to do this to other kids.

Do I have any ability for legal action in a bullying/harassment type of case? I feel like we have gone through the right channels and nothing has stopped this guys behavior. He should not be able to coach kids which is what I want to prevent. Any advice would be appreciated.

TIME TO NAME: The next CF/Barntown beer collaboration

So we've done two of these now ...

The "Firmly Entrenched" IPA from last summer.

"Transfer Brew" from last winter.

We are planning our annual kickoff party for Aug. 24 and will again be tapping a new CF themed beer at Barntown. Pete has agreed to make more cans this year to so people don't get left out.

Now the fun part .... need some fun names!

I'll throw the "So Proud" IPA out to start. Go!

41. Will McDonald, Iowa State, linebacker
One of the more coveted prospects Matt Campbell has brought to Ames, the 6-4, 230-pound Wisconsin native has a 6-9 wingspan and a 35-inch vertical jump. The redshirt freshman is expected to be Iowa State’s starting Sam linebacker. He actually played in four games last year as a defensive end before getting a redshirt. In his first career snap vs. TCU, he got up the middle to sack the QB and forced a fumble that led to a touchdown.

In high school, he was all-state in football and basketball, where he averaged 18.3 points and 12.8 rebounds. He actually never played football until his junior year of high school. In track, he won the state discus title with a throw of 179-9 and was third in the high jump with a leap of 6-4. He won the discus while doing it in a pair Chuck Taylors no less.

Lake House - Buying Guide

Just curious on thoughts around buying a lake house. I think we would prefer MN, but open to MO WI or even in IA (Options seem somewhat limited)

Trying to factor in drive time from central IA, location (close enough to town with grocery store) but balance seclusion and peace. (No interest in Okoboji).

We’ve been to a few places in northern MN but I don’t even know where to start when considering all the possible lakes there.

Anyone else venture into this?

College Fantasy Football League

Hello all, with the college football season quickly approaching I was wondering if anyone wanted to be in a college fantasy football league. This is the second year that Yahoo will have a college fantasy football option. They have made some changes to the way they did it last year. For example there are now conference specific leagues where you can pick players from only one Power 5 Conference, but if you would like the option to chose from every Power 5 team including Notre Dame that's still an option. If anyone is willing to participate in the league let me know! And if anyone has any questions, comments, or things they would like to see in this potential league like number of teams, roster size, scoring, divisions, etc., don't be afraid to speak your mind.
