New Des Moines Register Subscription Model

Looks like they are going to an online plan like what Warren Buffett did with the Omaha World-Herald.

5 digital benefits of a Des Moines Register subscription

The introductory rate is 99 cents a month for the first three months. If you are a print subscriber, however, you have full access without any additional fee, I believe.

I bet they can get a lot of national news types who cover the caucuses.

The only article I saw today where you had to be a subscriber to access was “The 41 Restaurants Des Moines Diners Miss the Most.”

If they are able to do what the World-Herald has done, which charges $9.99 a month, I believe (and I don’t see a lot of special deals) that would be a big accomplishment. If they want to step up their game in the sports department, they would probably need more articles like this:

Meet Dudley Blackwell, one of Iowa State's biggest recruiting priorities
https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/iowa-state/bbmen-recruiting/2019/07

Peterson: Meet JaQuan Bailey; Iowa State’s best-ever defensive end is all grown up now
https://www.desmoinesregister.com/s...iley-isus-best-ever-defensive-end/1742085001/

Recruiting related articles in the Omaha World-Herald seem almost always premium.

It doesn’t seem like many on this site read the Des Moines Register, and I have pretty good access to news independently, so I doubt that I would subscribe.

There seem to be a huge number of Cyclone related articles, however, right now on their website, so I would encourage everyone to check them out. It seems intended to lure you in but many seem pretty good. You can do things like incognito mode, clear history, or use a different browser if you reach the article limit. None of the articles that I saw are yet part of their new subscription plan.

I’m not sure how many have already been linked on this site, and I guess many are media days related. But quite a few seem to have been posted in just the last 24 hours or so.

How much actual work do you do?

A couple of weeks ago, I read an article on "imposter syndrome". It’s the feeling that you are undeserving of all your accomplishments; that somehow all your success is a fluke and soon you’ll be exposed.

Every win that I've had in my career, every pat on the back I've gotten, I know it is because of my skill and intellect. I don’t think I’m lazy. I don’t neglect my work, take unnecessarily long breaks, or give less than my best effort at my job. But when I sit there for hours on end trying to figure out what the hell I’m supposed to be doing when I’m just waiting for a client to call back or my boss to get back to me, the thoughts creep into my mind.

Do others have this much time? What are they doing right now? Should I be doing something else? Why don’t I have work to do? Is my boss not giving me more work because she doesn’t trust me?

I can recall nights where I've stayed late at the office, and I'm not against it at all if necessary.

I guess my question is: how much work do people actually get done in a given day or week? Are you also spending many of your days finding yourself with hours to kill, or are most of your days filled with actual work to be doing?

Let’s try to beat imposter syndrome by revealing just how much our jobs actually demand on a day to day basis. Or you can all reveal that yes, I am a lazy sack of **** and a time thief because I don’t have those full days.

Bill Connelly's (ESPN) Big 12 Preview

https://www.espn.com/college-footba...-preview-oklahoma-qb-machine-adds-jalen-hurts

For a quick summary FPI likes the Cyclones, S&P+ not so much.

But the best line of the article is:
If you're struggling to grasp "Iowa State, bastion of defensive creativity," then just wait until you maybe have to deal with "Iowa State, Big 12 title game participant."

Generation Y and Z Debt

https://www.usatoday.com/story/mone...rrassing-to-rely-on-them-after-27/1705355001/

Interesting article. I'd say it's a good thing that they feel a sense of embarrassment.

I'm an X'r so had way different dynamics to deal with.

Seems like the thinking is more short term, but suppose in our youth we all tended to be more that way.

I try to teach my kids to make good decisions and think ahead. I teach them accumulating debt is not a good thing as it can limit your options. There are other choices out there..Community College's are cheaper, the trades are great fields to get into with very little if any debt accumulation, joining the military can get your education paid for. Too many people are not going those routes and end up like people this article is about.

Weaponized Ticks

I just finished a book called "Bitten", by Kris Newby, that presents a very compelling case that Lyme disease was created and caused by the U.S. government for biological warfare during the Cold War. Just today, I see this:

https://www.rollcall.com/news/congress/house-orders-pentagon-report-whether-weaponized-ticks

I am about the furthest away as anyone from being a "tin foil hat" guy, but this made me think. If they were developing this 60 years ago, what horrors do they have in a lab today? Fascinating, but frightening. Highly recommend the book if anyone is interested.

Nice interview with Alex Golesh

https://www.recruitingnewsguru.com/...esh-gives-inside-look-to-cyclones-recruiting/

Athleticism has to jump off the screen for a recruit, beyond that it has been more about culture and fit. I know that is used a lot, but we make sure a guy protects our culture and is not disruptive to the team. We are looking for a team-first guy not a selfish guy. That is the No. 1 after falling in love athletically. We put a lot of stock into that more so than anywhere else. We have to win in the margins at ISU.

"With academics, that helps separate two guys in the same realm. If one is really good academically, and he has not missed school or is not tardy to class, that helps separates recruits. You have to be intelligent to play this game given how everything is now in college football. It is super important to fit into the culture and charter. It is important to be able to handle how fast things are moving in practice. You have to learn and go on to the next play. Recruits have to have a passion for the game at this level.”

Bob Lazar

I searched and didn't find a thread on this which I find amazing. I had heard about the doc on Netflix and then saw that he was on with Rogan so I listened to it. Can't wait to watch the doc now and I'm sure once I have some free time I'm going to jump down a rabbit hole for what could be days. Any thoughts? From the little I've looked so far, this stuff seems really hard to debunk as there are accounts backing up a lot of what he's saying or at least backing up that he was there.

Also, if this stuff is true, a space force is a complete waste of time. We're done for.

That is, of course, unless we have technology far beyond what we know about.

ESPN Announces their CFB TV Broadcast Crews

ESPN announced their Broadcast Pairings today for the upcoming season. Not a lot of changes. Matt Hasselbeck will now be the Thursday Night analyst. Friday Night squad is changing up as well. Also Dan Orlovsky goes into the spot Brock Huard had as Huard left for Fox. ESPN also hired Ryan Leaf mostly as a studio guy.
