Nebraska has spent $27,915,514

From Big Red Today

LINCOLN — No athletic department spent more money on firing football and men’s basketball coaches in the past 15 years than Nebraska, a new study shows.

Since 2005, Nebraska has fired football coaches Bill Callahan, Bo Pelini and Mike Riley, and men’s basketball coaches Doc Sadler and Tim Miles. That cost NU a total of $27,914,154 in severance pay, according to NCAA financial reports obtained in a public records request by AthleticDirectorU. That ranks most among 52 power conference schools, just ahead of Auburn, Florida, Kansas and UCLA.

In 2018 alone, Nebraska paid $11.9 million in severance payments. They were one of five schools to top $10 million in payments that year, including Arizona State, UCLA, Florida and Tennessee.

The bill mounted after more than a decade of controversial decisions by athletic directors and chancellors, dating back to the firing of Frank Solich in 2003. His replacement, Callahan, was fired in 2007, one year after the Huskers won the Big 12 North and finished with a 9-5 record. A 5-7 disaster led to Callahan’s outing, and $3.13 million buyout. New Athletic Director Tom Osborne replaced outed Athletic Director Steve Pederson and hired Pelini. After seven seasons and a 67-27 record, Pelini was fired by new Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst. Pelini’s buyout was $6.54 million and paid in monthly installments of $128,009. The final payment to Pelini went out in February of 2019.

Eichorst hired Mike Riley, who was fired three years later after a 19-19 record. Eichorst was fired first, after Nebraska’s loss to Northern Illinois in September of 2017. New Athletic Director Bill Moos fired Riley in December. Nebraska paid Riley a lump sum of $6.2 million.

In payments to football coaches the past 15 years, Nebraska is second only to Florida, paying a total of $24,340,701 to Callahan, Pelini and Riley. All three of those coaches were fired within one year of receiving a contract extension.

Doc Sadler was hired to run Nebraska basketball in 2006 and was then fired in March of 2012 after signing a contract extension the year prior. He was paid $3.4 million in monthly checks from March of 2012 to June of 2016. His replacement, Tim Miles, was fired last March after seven seasons. His buyout was $2.52 million, which is currently being paid out in $105,000 installments until March of 2021.

The average severance pay per fired Nebraska coach was $1.86 million, the study showed, which was fifth among the 52 schools. Tennessee's severance pay average was $2.8 million per coach, with the firings of football coaches Derek Dooley and Butch Jones and basketball coach Bruce Pearl.

In total, the study found, schools paid more than $491,000,000 in severance pay since 2005.

Nebraska currently has the highest-paid football coach in school history, Scott Frost, and the highest-paid basketball coach in school history, Fred Hoiberg. Frost is 9-15 in two seasons at Nebraska, the fewest amount of wins in two years in more than 50 years. Moos gave Frost an extension in the middle of last season. His $5 million a year salary ranks 14th in college football and fifth in the Big Ten. Hoiberg’s first season was the worst in 60 years with a 7-25 record. His seven-year, $25 million deal placed him as the 11th-highest paid coach in college basketball.

Frost’s buyout would cost Nebraska roughly $30 million. Hoiberg’s buyout would be $22 million.

Anyone else see the Starlink Satellite Constellation last Saturday?

I was sitting outside Saturday night smoking a cigar at about 8:15. Looked up and noticed a light moving across the sky. Looked like the space station ( only a bit dimmer). Shortly after, noticed a similar light on the exact same path across the sky. They kept coming and in about 10 minutes there were probably 20 evenly spaced object following the exact same path across the sky from due west to Northeast.

I called my son-in-law to make sure I was not crazy and he saw them as well. After a quick Facebook search he found out it was Elon Musk's Starlink Satellites. Anyone else see this? I'm guessing there is a way find out when they are visible in a given location. I live on outskirts of Cedar Rapids and even with the high degree of ambient light was able to see them fairly decent.

Recruiting updates?

It appears that we are involved with a lot of guys this Spring to fill our four scholarships. I was wondering if anyone CW knew if we had some guys who were on the verge of committing or were likely going to commit. Knowing this is a big offseason it would be nice to see one or two rides gets spoken for soon before we are left with scraps.

*** Coronavirus Mafia ***

Hello everyone and welcome to Coronavirus Mafia! I hope none of this is offensive, but something to do while we're all stuck in our houses (except for me, still working). Let's get started

Mafia: Coronavirus. Starts as two people. They get one nightly kill and one person to infect EVERY OTHER NIGHT. They lose their ability to infect if both of the original members are killed or found by the scientists. If they are unsuccessful in infecting someone (Doc protection, hitting an immune, shut down, hand sanitizer), they will be able to infect the following night.

Asymptomatic Carrier: This player will be told they are a regular innocent and not know they are part of the mafia. The rest of the mafia will know this player is mafia. On the days after a successful infection, anyone that votes for this player or receives a vote from this player will have a 1 in 4 chance at becoming infected and joining the mafia. Any player that becomes infected through the asymptomatic carrier will NOT know they are mafia, but the mafia will be informed. If this person is killed, everyone they infected will become regular members of the mafia and be able to PM. If this person is investigated by either of the scientists, the spread will stop and they will become regular mafia members and be able to PM.

The asymptomatic carrier will only infect someone the day after a successful night infection by the mafia. I am ruling last night's infection unsuccessful so they asymptomatic carrier is not in play yet. If the mafia successfully infects someone tonight, then tomorrow, whoever votes for asymptomatic or is voted by asymptomatic. If the mafia has a successful infection tonight they will NOT be able to infect tomorrow night.

SPECIAL INNOCENTS:

Trump: True wildcard that no one knows what he’s going to do. He can either kill someone or protect someone from getting killed/infected but can’t do the same on back to back nights

Dr. Fauci: Gets to protect one person a night from getting killed OR infected

US and China scientists: May investigate one person a night each. They will not know who each other are unless either investigates the other, in which case they will be able to PM. If between the two of them they investigate both of the original mafia members OR the asymptomatic carrier, the spread will stop. If the mafia tries to infect them, they will die but a random mafia member will also die. They are not immune to mafia kills.

Crazy Social Distancer: It’s important to practice social distancing, but this person takes it too far. They are immune to ever getting infected but not immune to being killed.

Stubborn Social Distancer: Since this person doesn’t listen to the rules, if they are infected by the mafia, they will take another regular innocent with them.

Governor Reynolds. Will have the chance to enforce a lockdown every night. I will pick a number via randomizer between 1-7 and if they guess it right, all innocents are safe from getting killed or infected. If she gets infected, she will go to the mafia BUT the mafia will not be able to infect anyone for the next two nights. Reynolds will have an instakill to use whenever she chooses. The instakill will be taken away if she goes to the mafia.

Senator: With the government recently passing the stimulus bill, this person will be able to double anyone’s vote the next day. The recipient will be notified their vote is doubled.

TP Hoarder: This person is able to steal anyone’s voting ability away from them. Whoever is selected will be notified they can’t vote the next day.

SPECIAL ITEM
Hand sanitizer- This will be started with a random regular innocent and will protect them from being infected but not killed. They must pass it on at the end of the night. If passed to any mafia members throughout the game it will be taken away.

Ideas on what causes this tree damage?

I have a maple and linden (I think) trees near each other in my backyard with some bad spots in each that I just noticed last year. The first pic is of the Linden and other two are of the Maple. Any ideas what caused this or who I’d ask? We live in Ankeny. I think the trees are about 25 years old. Looking at the earl may website maybe sunscald damage, but the trunks seem ok...

Payton Sandfort

Does anyone see Prohm throwing the 6'7 wing from Waukee on offer? He is a very solid player who is an assassin from behind the arch. Iowa has offered as well as Drake, Minnesota, Utah, Air Force, and Loyola. Iowa State has some bigger fish they are targeting on the perimeter but imo this is a kid ISU does not want to miss out on. With potentially 4 openings in the 2021 Cycle I think they can afford to throw out an offer to him.

St. John Feature

HELLO EVERYONE

To start: Here is that much talked about feature I have mentioned.

https://cyclonefanatic.com/2020/03/...tepped-out-of-his-comfort-zone-at-iowa-state/

St. John is seriously such an interesting guy and I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I did.
I also tweeted the social media quote that I didn't end up using in the story itself.

Also, I just wanted to say that I am sorry I have been MIA. I haven't said a word in the forums since we found out championships were canceled. I think if anyone understands how sad that felt its you guys and it's been really hard for me personally to find creative motivation when the world is in such a weird place and the season came to such an odd and abrupt end. My job is to cover this team and more than ever now is when we need to keep the coverage coming even if our off-season came a little TOO soon. I have phone calls set up this afternoon that I hope will bring more coverage to you guys straight from the staff. Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! As usual, my dms, email, etc are always open for you guys!
