Tips for Building a New Home

My wife and I are planning to build a new home and are looking for advice to save money on this process. So many new builds in Iowa are going for $200/square foot and that is entirely out of our price range.

We don’t need/want anything fancy at all—-1500-1700 total square footage with 3BR, 2.5BA with 2 car garage, standard cabinets, and a partially finished basement. Any tips, tricks, things to keep in mind to cut costs?

I know the house description is vague, but we are in the beginning stages of this process and want to eliminate things from the get go if it’s going to jack up the price.

Coronavirus-1st day out

Lets create a dream scenario where Coronavirus just magically disappears and everyone is free to go out and do what they want. What does your Day 1 look like?

What do you do with your first "free" day?
Do you eat somewhere special?
Do you go shopping?
Head out to the clubs?
Visit family?

John Prine dead at 73

He had been hospitalized for several weeks, so it's unsurprising but sad all the same.

Hell of a songwriter. I came to be a fan of his in a roundabout sort of way...his name was mentioned in a throwaway song on a throwaway Everclear album back in the late 90s, and out of curiosity I looked him up.
My top five in no particular order - Lake Marie, Summer's End, Clay Pigeons, Your Flag Decal Won't Get You into Heaven Anymore, and Hello In There. RIP.

On That Note: It's No Surprise That They're Giving None Away

Hi and welcome to another weekly music post from the three guys who trade off doing this - @cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz and me. We call the series "On That Note."

As you might suspect from the title this week we're looking at songs that mention money. That is any coin denomination, monetary amount, or even folding money. Normally we would exclude songs with the actual topic - in this case the word "Money" from exclusion. However after discussing the topic we (well, mostly me) decided the topic might be too limiting without allowing Money as a legitimate posting criterion. Also allowed is the word "Coin." Also accepting foreign currency.

Please read: Since we loosened up the normal rules to allow "Money" in the lyrics or title we're trading allowing that by NOT ALLOWING artist names like Eddie Money or Johnny Cash.

Last weeks OTN was I Shall Be Released. You can find it here:

wifi router/extender questions and help

I have a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 DST router that I bought about 4 years ago from Best Buy. It came with a DST adapter so I can have enough range to reach my office computer in my basement. A few months ago, my DST adapter stopped working but my router can still barely reach my office. Now that I am working from home, I was hoping to get my wifi in my basement office to a stronger signal.

the questions I had were:
  • Is my Nighthawk AC1900 router still adequate? If not, any recommendations? (need to consider a budget as my wife's hours have been reduced)
  • Can I get some sort of help/tech support on my DST adapter even though the geek squad support ended a couple years ago?
  • If I can't fix my DST adapter, what would be a good extender without breaking the bank.
