Sunday Thoughts: The Pulverizing of Provo- BYU Thoughts

As has been discussed already, most will point to 2020 as Campbell's best year coaching. This one to me has to be tied for first. New offensive coach staff, 5 starters lost in freaking August, and a new QB. Just an incredible job and I'm so happy he is our coach.

Offense
  • It is not hyperbolic to say that some of Abu Sama's runs were Breece like. He's a unique RB, the type KState has had for 20 years. Not overly huge at 200 lbs, but he can make multiple guys miss and has jets to outrun corners. Only a freshman, so excited for him. Really him and Sanders were awesome and will be a great combo. I feel for Carson Hansen b/c he only gets carries when the other team knows it's a run. He looks good as well.
  • Becht: He is likely going to end up beating Brock's freshman TD record. I never, ever, could have imagined he would be this good. He has the potential to be all Big 12 really starting next year. So accurate, and when he is rolling in the RPO scheme, defenses cannot cover that.
  • Noel's best game as a cyclone. We are starting to see his full potential. I think he's honestly just thinking less out there and trusting his skills more.
  • OL shoutout: James Neal, Miller, and Black opened up some massive gaps for the running scheme. I was actually happy to see Treiber and Simmons get some run at the end too, they also looked good.

Defense
  • Jamison Patton flashed in his first outing. 5 tackles, 4 of which solo, and an interception. Yes he had a play where he struggled in pass game early, but he clearly has speed and talent. I do think it will be huge to have Cooper back this next Saturday, but this was good to see for me.
  • Bacon had a strong game at OLB/DE, and Gerry Vaughn was great against the run. Will McLaughlin had a nice pick early, the LB crew has really gotten better since the non conference schedule.
  • I can see why the staff likes Drew Surges, he moves well and almost had a nice pick at the end
Recruiting - I think anyone who had questions about our recruiting should watch the tape last night in it's entirety. We absolutely blasted that team folks. We had better talent across both lines, better depth, and they simply did not have many (if any) skill guys that would start at ISU. That's the byproduct of 3 years of damn good recruiting.

Man is this team going to be good next year. I am so excited to be bowl eligible too. Hope they get one in DFW area or Phoenix.

Defense This Season - Perspective (BYU Stats not included)

I am guilty of this as well, but I think its important we keep in mind that the defense - by age - is YOUNGER than the offense. And I know we've had bad moments but all in all, this year's defense has been great.

Top 30 in total defense.
Tied for 31st in 3rd down defense.
54th in completion percentage.
50th in red zone defense.
41st in first downs allowed
5th in Interceptions
30th in rushing defense
48th in passing defense
31st in scoring defense

The only areas we ware really struggling in is tackles for loss and then sacks (91st) for TFL and 111th in Sacks - hello Will McDonald -

We might not be "elite" this year defensively but given how insanely young we are there.
Given our front that we have 1 senior who plays in our front 6 and we only two more juniors.... I think the defense is doing really, really well. The offense is more mature than the defense in terms of older players and Vaughn has missed the earlier part of the season or was limited and arguably the worst of the injuries has been on defense (Cooper and Verdon being out) losing Tampa for a half for targeting.

As much as people try to give the offense the out of being young I think the defense has been really, really good given the youth. If we can find a few more consistent players to get the TFL's and sacks improving and maybe a little quicker at LB - I think everything else is in place

Even with our limitations there, we are essentially a top half to top third defense nationally. With this young a group, I think that's really darn good

Cyclones vs Hawks

The hawks sent nearly their whole squad to a D3 meet yesterday with mixed results. I think the coaches needed to see what they had in some of their guys before getting to Ames. After those results, here is my updated predictions.

125 - Ayala v Kysen: 3-0 hawks
133 - Frost v Teske: 3-3
Teske got dinged up so he will need to recover
141 - Woods v Frost: 6-3 Iowa
149 - Ech v VV: 6-6
157 - Chittum v Franek: 9-6 Iowa
165 - David v Caliendo: 9-9
174 - Gaitan v Arnold: 12-9 Iowa
184 - Feldkamp v Swafford: 12-12
197 - Broderson v Glazier: 15-12 Iowa
Hwt - Bastida v Hill: 16-15 Cyclones Win

I realize that Ech could be down to 141 from the inside sources here and Casey could be in at 149. For now, I’ll keep my predictions as such. Until I see Chittum doing it, I’ll have to go with Franek. I think Gabe is a little better than Gaitan and I hope that doesn’t turn into a major. Swafford is a very quality wrestler and I think he keeps it to a decision. Broderson could beat Glazier but for dramatics I gave that toss up to Iowa. With a Broderson win we can comfortably walk into the last match. I’ve decided Bastida will major Hill although I’m not surprised by a decision. CYCLONES WIN!

Bowl Eligible!

After last season and the chaos of last summer, I just wanted to see improvement over the year, particularly with the offense. This team has already accomplished more than I expected. I hope the Clones win out, but even if they lose a lot of their remaining games, this season is a huge success in my book.

Cambell has guided this team through some rough seas. No, he is not perfect, but d@mn he is a h*ll of a coach!

Go Clones!!

Horns Down!

Please beat BYU tonight

I'm popping by to wish Iowa State good luck in defeating the Cougars tonight. I'm a Utah State fan but BYU dropped us from their schedule after they joined the Big 12 because honestly they are chicken as hell to play us because we beat them constantly. They cancelled an in-state rivalry that dated back over 100 years and it's so scummy.

I'm also going to let you in on some background. BYU fans look down on and hate state schools because they think they are so much better than everyone else and view us as pond scum. I know BYU fans particularly hate Iowa State because your student government tried to keep their butts out of the Big 12. I'm bummed they weren't successful at that. I wrote a letter and called your student government telling them how bad BYU is and how they treat people. I called the Big 12 to but could never get ahold of anyone.

Anyway, I like Iowa State because we're both ag schools. I'll be cheering for you guys tonight and moving forward whenever you play BYU. Please absolutely annihilate these jerks.
