Holiday Decorations!

Our living room is blue and orange, and things need to match in my house. Ergo, we hand make about 90% of our ornaments (we do a new one as a family each year, to varying degrees of success), and match the wrapping paper and homemade bags.

I absolutely love my mother in law, but she sent the red gifts that don’t match. Sigh.

Tonight’s 43 point effort against the Heat, coupled with the pending NBA All-Star invite, seals the deal for me. The GOAT.

Looking for a pair for Texas on Jan 17.

I was watching the local news today and they had a very interesting story on a proposal to change the way Iowa high schools are classified for football competition.

It's been shown there's a clear disadvantage for schools that have a large Free and Reduced Lunch (FRL) population when it comes to football competition. For example, until Roosevelt upset Waukee last season, the Des Moines public schools had lost 160+ consecutive games against the suburban schools.

So the proposal is to subtract 40% of the school's FRL enrollment from the school's total enrollment for purposes of classifying the school for football competition. I'm thinking that could mean schools like Des Moines East could be playing schools like Bondurant or Norwalk in football.

Apparently, 80% of the Iowa high schools surveyed are in favor of this proposal. I haven't thought it through very carefully, but I think I'd be in favor as well.

If true, this is very surprising to me. The tweet has been deleted.

Last Fall, I started a thread about college search and campus visits. I do appreciate comments from my fellow CFers espcially one mentioning tat the goal is to go to good schools as my son might change his major - the poster was correct: he decided to change his career goal, instead of going to med school, he wants to major either in Biomedical Engineering or Applied Maths & Statistics.

One year later, here we are: still writing essays, waiting and getting announcements. So far he got accepted by U of Minnesota Twin Cities. Still waiting for couple of more announcements in January, including Wisconsin-Madison on the 31st). He got deferred by couple of colleges (we know those 2 would be a reach) but got accepted last week by Notre Dame. Now he's leaning towards ND now, although that means paying much more than U of M. But at the end of the day we'll see how things go and sit down to see what makes sense.

Would love to hear experiences with fellow CFers (either parents or students themselves). I always think it's fun the exchange stories like this.

There is a video of the entire Bishop Garrigan vs Hopkins Minnesota game on YouTube for those interested in seeing Audi Crooks other than in highlights. Hopkins of course is the large school Minnesota team that produces Division 1 players year after year. And Bishop Garrigan is an Iowa small school team. So a mismatch in the talent pool because of school size just like when Lexi Donarski's Aquinas team player Hopkins a couple years. I just started watching but Audi seems to get up and down the floor well. Had one basket so far, some nice passes out of the post and swished a couple free throws.

Hello. I have a lot of music backed up on Google Drive. I have yet to find an easy method of listening to those files using a Chromebook. Anyone have any suggestions on how to listen to these files directly from Drive? Is their an "app" or something that will act like a traditional media player on a computer for this purpose?

If you celebrated Christmas as a child, or do now with your own children, what are traditional stocking stuffers in your house? Or, if you don’t celebrate Christmas but other holidays with gifts, what are small traditional trinkets associated?

When I was little, we always got an apple and an orange (I can’t associate a URL with text on mobile, here is a link to the tradition of oranges in stockings: https://www.eatingwell.com/article/7873163/orange-in-christmas-stocking/ ). We usually got a bunch of chocolate (best was Butterfinger Jingles, which I can no longer find). And there was usually underwear or socks of some kind. Then a gift from Santa.

Our kids get a chocolate orange from Terrys, some Reese’s trees, and quite often underwear or socks. Our youngest specifically asked Santa for some this year while visiting, which made me laugh.
