RECRUITING: Major target Jamarion Batemon says he can see himself in an Iowa State jersey after visit

RECRUITING: I caught up with @JamarionBatemon after his visit to Ames this weekend. He says Iowa State is still at the top of his list, along with some others.

"I see a lot of things where I can see myself out there playing in (an Iowa State) jersey."

Morgantown, WV Questions

Good morning Cyclones!
With the schedule being released today, my crew is excited to plan our next away game tailgate. Our plan is to go to Morgantown this year and I just had a few questions:
  1. Where does everyone typically stay? From what I am seeing it looks as if the area close (East) to the Monongahela River is the best as it has a few bars (Iron Horse Tavern, etc). I seen a couple VRBO/AirBNB as well as a Marriott in the area that we are scouting but open to other options. Is this not the place to stay? We would rather stay by the bars/restaurants and travel to the stadium on Saturday morning.
  2. What are some must do things in Morgantown?
I probably will have more questions, but we are only 30mins out from the release so I will start with those.

Stop underutilizing Ward

This is related to the Robert Jones thread but I didn't want to harp on this there and taint what was suppose be an ode to Jones and is hard work.

Much like last year Otz is really dropping the ball in terms of utilizing/playing one of his best and most effective players. More than even my disdain for Jones' play last year was his usage, moreso Otz's penchant for for inserting BRE at the expense of Osun. While Osun had limitations, and had play sometimes dictated by foul trouble, he was often prematurely removed from games, without the faintest sign of fatigue. I maintained it was a huge mistake not to let the game (obvious signs of fatigue, foul trouble, or ineffectiveness) dictate Osun's minutes and I'm pretty sure we lost a game or two because of it.

This year Ward is an absolute force. Even more than Osun, he is one of the best players in league play when he's on the floor. We are offensively efficient and defensively devastating when he plays. Despite this, and for reasons I can't even begin to understand, Otz is arbitrarily limiting his minutes. Much like last year, the benefactor is often Jones.

Unlike last year, Jones' play isn't the reason for this concern. Bob is fine when he's on the court and I'd be happy with his utilization if he was our best or only option. The problem is he isn't and for that matter neither is King. Otz needs to play Ward until he shows he is ineffective, is in foul trouble (which has sometimes been an issue), or is obviously fatigued. But if you condition a player to only play 20ish minutes he will never learn how to manage a larger workload. I have seen nothing from Ward to indicate he isn't capable of such. While it's also likely he won't be as "fresh" (often a counterargument by some posters on here), no player is as "fresh" playing 30+ minutes compared to 20. That doesn't mean it's not the right move or that the team doesn't benefit by having a better player on the floor more. This would most certainly be the case here.

It's time for Otz to unleash the beast and allow Ward to show he can/can't handle the workload. It's not about Robert or even Tre, it's about Ward being the much better player of the 3. Largely I think Ward/Jones' minutes should mostly be dictated by the opponent and who (of those two) is more effective. In the KU game we needed King's scoring so Bob sits. In other games Bob will be the better player/matchup so King sits. Then there may be some games where Ward is ineffective or is in foul trouble. In those the other two (obviously) get more minutes.

Personally I think Otz's objectivity is clouded by Jones' work ethic. Tre and Osun should have both played more last year but Otz routinely overplayed Jones. This year Ward losing minuets to Jones (and even King). We are a much better team when Ward is on the floor and Otz is robbing the team of it's maximal potential by limiting his minutes. A 43.9% floor time rate is beyond criminal.

Thanks for proving me wrong Big Rob

I often get a lot of flak about my previous issues with Robert Jones' play, more specifically with his over-utilization and playing time. I was often accused of having a personal vendetta against him, something that simply wasn't accurate. Statistically he was the WORST player during Big 12 play who received significant minutes. He was an offensive blackhole, a player who didn't possess the footspeed to rotate, and the stats bore that out. Moreso I was frustrated at Otz for (often) unnecessarily playing him a large number of minutes when we had a player (for most of the season) in Osun who was wildly effective when he played. While I do think Osun had (for whatever reasons) conditioning/durability limitations I still feel he was prematurely removed from games and could have (often) logged more minutes. As the stats show he was one of the best players in the league when he was on he floor.

Quite frankly I thought Robert was tapped out. Everyone knows he's not the most athletically gifted player and after being here a few years, being an upper classman, I thought he simply was who he was. But with a LOT of hard work and a headier on court presence (quicker moves and less forcing down low) he has proved me wrong. He has went from a -3.8 conference BPM, far and away the worst in the league in 2023, to a 4.4 BPM in 2024. While he's certainly not one of the better players in the league, that number makes him extremely valuable, when utilized correctly.

Thanks for proving me wrong Bob. Not wrong about your play last year, but wrong that I didn't think this sort of improvement was even possible. If there was ever a testament to what hard work can do THIS is it. Without spending the time to look I'm guessing this sort of BPM improvement, arguably in an even tougher conference, would be tough to find.

Jeff Goodman Drama?

Anyone seeing this go down on X? I’m trying to figure out whats going on, so far I got, some guy made a documentary about Providence and Ed Cooley, a big east X account was taken down and Goodman DM’ed the documentary creator to threaten legal action. He is now getting roasted on X.

That’s all I have so far, I’m not really understanding what Goodmans beef with the doc is but if anyone wants to add some context please do.

Doc is called Devine Providence for anyone that wants to watch.

WBB: Audi Crooks named Big 12 Freshman of the Week

Dual this week (WVU Friday 2/2)

Senior night is this Friday, which is interesting with UNI and Mizzou both at home later on.

WVU brings some solid guys into Hilton Friday night.

Top 10 opponents at 141, 149, 165 and a couple more ranked at 184 & 285. Their 197 was an ncaa qualifier last season, and their guy at 133 beat Redding last season (has struggled mightily this year though).

Good bounce back opportunity for Ech, and Casey has a chance to get a higher ranked W. David also gets another top 10 guy that nearly upset KOT this weekend.
