Bill Connelly's (ESPN) Big 12 Preview

For a quick summary FPI likes the Cyclones, S&P+ not so much.

But the best line of the article is:
If you're struggling to grasp "Iowa State, bastion of defensive creativity," then just wait until you maybe have to deal with "Iowa State, Big 12 title game participant."

Nice interview with Alex Golesh

https://www.recruitingnewsguru.com/...esh-gives-inside-look-to-cyclones-recruiting/

Athleticism has to jump off the screen for a recruit, beyond that it has been more about culture and fit. I know that is used a lot, but we make sure a guy protects our culture and is not disruptive to the team. We are looking for a team-first guy not a selfish guy. That is the No. 1 after falling in love athletically. We put a lot of stock into that more so than anywhere else. We have to win in the margins at ISU.

"With academics, that helps separate two guys in the same realm. If one is really good academically, and he has not missed school or is not tardy to class, that helps separates recruits. You have to be intelligent to play this game given how everything is now in college football. It is super important to fit into the culture and charter. It is important to be able to handle how fast things are moving in practice. You have to learn and go on to the next play. Recruits have to have a passion for the game at this level.”

Y Cap City schedule change week of 7/15

Just a heads up that that Y Cap City scheduled changed for the final week.

Three games on Sunday 7/21:

5:45 Jacobson/Grill vs. Lewis/Johnson
7:15 (approx) Championship Game

All games at Valley High School.

Should be some entertaining basketball.

MLB: Robo Plate Ump is finally tried out

Robo balls and strikes ump is finally here. I am ready for this. It's been getting frustrating seeing how many balls get called as strikes with the advanced technology the fans and the dugout get to see while the balls/strikes get influenced by umps checking the catchers glove or thinking Altuve and Judge have the same strikes zone. Bring robo guy on. No more "Well, Bob's behind the plate today and he gives you the outside strike." or "Well, It's Jimmy callin' today so adjust your strike zone six inches high" ********.

Article actually covers this debut in some depth including how they figure in biometrics for each player to adjust strike zone for each at bat. Some of the low pitches will now be balls. Some of the nastier breaking stuff may be shown to catch plate and be a strike. Some of the borderline stuff the umps are just guessing at anyway.

‘Robot ump’ calls first professional baseball game with one hitch and no controversy

Iowa Gold Rush and other lost History

Odd tidbits of lost Iowa history fascinate me. Here is one I like--Iowa once had a gold rush. http://www.iowagold.com/IOWAGOLDPAGES/iowa_gold_where_to_find.htm
from link:

---------
GOLD IN HARDIN COUNTY IOWA

In the spring of 1853, shortly after the organization of the county, John Ellsworth imparted the information to a faithful few that he had discovered gold upon his farm a short distance south of Eldora Iowa. The gold fever, consequent upon the delivery of the precious metal in California, was yet at its height. Prospecting was going on in almost every State in the Union, and dreams of future riches derived from the working of a mine of gold upon their place, took possession of the minds of thousands. Farm operations were neglected in many locations, and with pick and shovel, the farmer went out to search for the gold that was sure to be hid among the rocks on his place.

It was a short time that gold had been discovered in harden county. The press of the country took it up, and the farther from home the news reached, the more marvelous were the stories told and instead of having an Eldora here in Hardin County, it was certain that is was a veritable Eldorado.

Soon the prairie schooners wended their way hither, and during the summer it is estimated that between two and three thousand persons visited the supposed mines, coming here with hopes and leaving very much disappointed. Some would spend a few days in the neighborhood, while others would not remain an hour. Often, it was stated that on arriving within a few miles of the place, the men would stop to inquire the way, and ask after the prospects of the mines. When told that there was probably no gold to be found, they would drive on, swearing that the people here did not want any one to come, but desired to keep all the gold for themselves. On returning with blasted hopes they never thought to stop and apologized for their rude conduct.
