With the gyms closing down, I'm looking to buy a treadmill, as I usually only have time to run early morning/late night. Does anyone have any recommendations for one they've used? I checked out a Peleton, but didn't need/want the paid classes. Hoping for something I can stream Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, etc and not be impossible to move.

Figured we could use a thread to keep a running list of establishments around the metro if people are still wanting to patronize during this shutdown.

While social distancing, I accidentally stumbled on something that killed more time than I expected. It was fun, but a little melancholy. I basically spent the first 22 years of my life in the same smaller town in Iowa. Since graduating from ISU I've lived in several states, all far from my hometown, for the past 30 years.

I got back home to visit family every couple years, but less frequently over the past several years. I keep up on things in my hometown and read a story about a local police situation at an address I didn't recognize, so I popped it in Google maps. I realized I knew the area because it was near a spot in the river we used to swim as pre-teens. The memories of that "swimmin' hole" and that time of my life rushed back.

Even though I've been back over the years, I decided to take a virtual driving tour around my home town using Google Maps as my car. I followed the routes I would walk or ride my bike, from the house I grew up in, to the swimming pool, through downtown, around the neighborhood, to areas I played, went to school, and places I hung out and got into trouble. As I toured the city, so many great memories came back to me that had escaped me for years. Although I've seen much of it in person, so many things have changed over the years, but so many other things have stayed almost exactly the same.

So if you find yourself looking for something to kill time while you quarantine, give it a try.

I want to start something fun in these scary times of Covid-19. I had this weekend off which my plan was to watch the first and second rounds. So since there is no tournament this year. I am asking the following.

Name your best first round games in the past, maybe an upset, good game that went into overtime. If there is a link to watch please include that so I can watch on Thursday and Friday. You can add first four games as well.

LOVED the piece on Stevie Johnson, his transition from high school scoring star to critical role player on the elite 8 basketball team, then switch to football successfully and with impact. I remember attending one of the early games (I believe it was even a preseason game) and coach went off on Richard Evans because he had to put Stevie back in the game with 4 fouls. I was in the first few rows behind the bench and the spittle as he chewed his arse almost reached us there! Nice job Rob!

First time, long time-

Just want to plant a seed for everyone to consider: Lawrence is a great football road trip from Central Iowa.

This year we play at KU on Oct. 3. I took my family to Lawrence for the 2018 game and had a great day. Did a day trip from DSM, ate both Waffle House for breakfast and BBQ for supper. Got into the game for $15 each, but others got in for even less. Saw two ridonkulous Butler TDs in person.

The key is that without trying Iowa State fans outnumbered KU fans at least 2:1. Granted, Les has gotten the fan base a little more excited, but unless they start 3-1 or 4-0 (I don’t see them winning in Waco in week 2) I think Iowa State fans can overwhelm the KU fan base with only 10-15K bodies. (It seems like we have that many alumni in the KC metro alone.)

It looks like everyone is hoarding right now. On what are you stocking up right now due to COVID-19? Are there things on which you normally stock up?

I always keep a comical amount of toilet paper in the house, just in case something happens where I'm unable to get to the store or order online for a while. So we're all fine there.

I love the way CMC and Manning use the 3 TE's in our Power Spread Offense but we may be losing all 3 of the main guys at that position. The staff is hitting the recruiting trail hard to add some depth to Skylar Loving-Black, Easton Dean and potentially D'Shayne James. As for HS Recruiting Iowa State is sitting very good with 4 Star Ohio Native Jack Pugh. Instate Player Max Llewellyn has 3 CB picks for ISU. AJ Rollins is the #4 Player in the State of Nebraska, the Omaha Native is also Cousins with Breece Hall. ISU is also in the running for JUCO TE Quentin Moore with Oklahoma State looking like the early favorite for the Independence CC TE.

Anyone going through College Basketball withdraw ESPN U is replaying a number of Big 12 games today. Quite a few ISU games on the schedule.

Just curious if anyone has done this before as I have a lawyer ready to go and have everything set up on multiple sites. What Im curious about is how would I deal with a realtor since one just contacted me. Would the buyer be responsible to pay that realtor I would I have to pay them?

I'm going to anoint myself the great decider... and award 2020 AA placings and team trophies based upon the final seeding for the tourney (at the time it was cancelled). The competitors and teams earned these seeds and rankings from the results of the entire season. I’ve been to multiple tourneys when they are cancelled the awards are given out based upon earned seeding.

From a Team perspective: Congratulations to the ISU coaches who coached this team finish 8th overall. No bonus points were earned in this tourney and all competitors wrestled to seed. According to a post by OOTClone: we would have finished 9th, with Iowa in first place. However, since it’s “my world” we always finish above the Hawks, so we move up 1 spot. According to OOTClone’s post I’d also like to congratulate ISU Alumni, Cael Sanderson and PSU for taking home yet another team title. Ohio State takes second, and Northwestern places 3rd (which is a huge surprise to me).

ps... because I'm the great decider I'm going to only qualify 32 participants per weight class and not have the stupid pigtail matches. Wishing all Cyclone fans a good, corona-virus free day!

The Situation
Despite recent success, there is only one indication that this conference will accommodate an At-Large bid this season; UNI, with a NET Ranking of 36 would have a solid case were they to slip in this tournament, but the next highest ranked teams in NET are Loyola (98) and Bradley (109). Iowa State, just as a reference, is currently 91st. That means, if anyone else wants in, they've got to win the whole damn thing!

Recent History

Bradley was the team that made a run in this tournament last year, making the NCAA Tournament despite being the 5th seed. In 2018, it was the 1 seeded Loyola running the table, en route to a Final 4 Appearance. Fun year. In 2017, 2 seed Wichita State won the title match against 1 seed Ilinois State in their Arch Madness curtain call.

ISR Slant
As mentioned above, locally, UNI has a great shot at an At-Large bid. If they were to get upset in their first game against either Drake or Illinois State, they could potentially be left out in the cold, but in my opinion, they are safe either way. On the other hand, Drake is in must win mode if they want to reach the Big Dance for the first time in 12 years. I always want Drake to do well, but their path goes through the Panthers. We'll see if they have any magic in the tank after a somewhat disappointing season IMO. They are 5 point favorites for the game against 10-20 Illinois State tonight, and should win, setting up a noon game tomorrow vs UNI.

Feel free to add any info to this. I'm going to be glued to my TV for the next 3 nights. Might take a nap for the 2nd game tonight though. Evansville is winless in conference....they have got to be one of the worst NCAA teams in recent memory.

I know this has been discussed before on here; CW and Blum did an excellent Summer Series on this a few years ago, but given the current sports desert we're in, I thought it'd be a fun topic to resurrect.

My 4:

Dan McCarney: Resurrected ISU football and made us competitive agian. Returned to bowl games. Turned around the series with Iowa. Laid a foundation that made things easier for the coaches after him.

Johnny Orr: Similar to McCarney, turned around a dead program, took us back to the NCAAs, started a pattern of recruiting great players who would go on to the NBA. Started Hilton Magic, which ISU basketball is known for nationally. Like Dan, laid a foundation that made things easier for the coaches who followed.

Fred Hoiberg: Grew up in Ames, arguably the most popular player in ISU basketball history, came back as coach and turned around a dormant program, brought ISU hoops back into the national spotlight and recruited some beloved all time great Cyclones. Arguably the most consistent ISU basketball coach.

Bill Fennelly: Took over a program that had zero fan support, and made it a consistent NCAA participant, and built fan support that is equaled at very few other women's hoops programs around the country.

Had Troy Davis won the Heisman, he would have easily been my #4. I do remember Chris had Cael as his #4 and made a good argument for him.

Is there a real possibility that going to the draft this year versus waiting one more year could actually get you more money, or the value of the draft this year is great diminished because of no NCAA tournament? Would it then be worth it for Haliburton to just stay another year?

I think it could be debated. I still think he goes if he’s predicted top 10, but does this shake things up?

With the coronavirus pandemic and the possibility of extended time at home, I realized it's been almost exactly 30 years since the ice storm that knocked out power and shut things down for days. That's the closest example I could think of to what the next few weeks might be like if schools end up being canceled.

I think at my house it was about 4-5 days without power. No school the entire week, no hot showers, no Nintendo, no TV...probably a blessing the internet wasn't a thing yet. Daylight Saving Time didn't start until April then so it was still dark fairly early. After a few days we finally gave up and found a hotel with power, only to come home the next morning with power restored.

What I forgot about the period was the weather pattern around then included a tornado outbreak.
