For V-Day: Love Songs you actually like

A lot of songs are all over amore. A lot of schmaltzy stuff for sure. This maudlin stuff does surprisingly get us singing along. Some are not true love songs but about attraction, desire, and loss. So with that, what love songs have you got old or new?

Here are a few:

Lipsey vs Hunter

Hopefully some of you will find this interesting. For several years now a group of friends and I have done a Big 12 fantasy basketball pool. Only conference games count. I found the point scoring online somewhere. This is what we use. Points = 1, Rebounds = 1.2, Assists = 1.5, Steals = 2, Blocks = 2, Turnovers = -1. I have a spreadsheet that totals up the fantasy points for each player based on the stat line from each game. There are 7 of us in the pool and we pick 8 players in a standard snake style draft. This year I had the first pick (not really where you want to be). I took Hunter with my 2nd pick at 14 based on his good non-conference numbers. I also drafted Lipsey at 43. Through 12 games Lipsey has 281.2 fantasy points and Hunter has 182.2. I feel like I made a poor pick! I imagine Texas feels worse!

If anyone wants more information on how to run one of these or wants the blank spreadsheet I would be more than happy to share it. When we started this we only did 6 players and you had to have 3 G and 3 F/C. We evolved to add 2 bench players in case of injury, suspension, etc. and eventually scrapped the position requirements as well.

Below I added in the league roster and how each player has scored. The number in parentheses under PLAYER is where they were picked in the draft. You'll notice we all missed drafting Kalscheur. Not sure how that happened.

Traveling to Canada?

My wife is planning a trip to Vancouver this summer. She ran across some information online or in a podcast somewhere that said you have to apply for some sort of clearance to get into Canada if you have had an OWI before. I was young and stupid once and received an OWI about 15 years ago. She said from what she's found there's no real time limit on how long they require you to apply from time you received one. Does anybody have experience with this that can give me some information? She mentioned possibly needing a lawyer to help me apply, so names of any lawyers in Central Iowa that handle this sort of thing would be much appreciated. Feel free to just PM me if you don't want the crowd to know you have had to deal with this before.

Welp. Texas Tech just beat #12 Kansas State

Our game sucked balls. But we gotta keep perspective. It honestly cannot be understated how tough this league is. That isn’t casual banter. It’s factual. In fact it’s the toughest league season maybe in decades.

Goal for us was to be a bubble team this year. We are gonna make it in. Yes it sucks to lose these close games no doubt. Season is still a success and can do damage.

Vinyl album sales hit nearly 43.5 MILLION in 2022

Just throwing this out there because I found it interesting, and I think more than a few of you will also. I worked for a music and video retailer on the West Coast when vinyl was all but eliminated from store shelves in 1989/90 because most people were buying music on cassette tape at the time (soon to be overtaken by CDs). I never thought vinyl would EVER come back as a viable format for music sales, but it certainly has and now holds the largest share of music sold in a physical format. Really good read, if you're into this type of thing.

Big 12s - stealing a slot

Looking ahead, I got to thinking, if you have not earned an allocation for Big 12, and you need to steal a spot to get to NCAAs, it looks like you would have to get two wins in order to steal a spot (or advance via bye). You can afford to lose your first match as long as you then win 2 in a row, or you can win the first but have to then win 1 of the next two in order to place in the allocation position. I am assuming 8 allocations at a given weight (specifically eyeing 125 and 141). Does this look to be correct?
