American Idol

I have not even thought about this show in years. However this year there is a singer who has an uncanny ability to reach your soul. Iam Tongi is an 18 year old kid from Hawaii that just had a gift to make you reflect on life as he sings. At the same time it is soothing to your heart and soul

He lost his dad who taught him music a couple months before his audition.

Looking Back at What Worked in 99-00

I was at my folks place and stumbled across a highlight tape of the 99-00 men and women's teams. I was at all of those games, but thought I'd watch to see what made those teams the best ISU have offered.

1. Angie Welle was everything we remember her to be. She often led the team running the court and her left handed shots were something unusual at that time. She moved like no center I've seen in a long time. Time and time again she was down court for a long feed and a layup.

2. This team had depth. Wow...starters were Frese, Welle, Taylor, Francis, and Gahan. Then add in Wilson, Cipinyte, Haugan, Junod, Cizek, Mo and others. The staff had lots of options to go to without drop-off.

3. There were several really good teams this team had to beat at that time. Iowa. Nebraska, North Carolina, Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas (who beat the Clones twice!) etc.

4. The current staff could do well by watching tape from this period. The offense was always attacking. It wasn't a stand and pass around the perimeter. The guards were always slashing and looking for either the shot or a teammate to pass to. I didn't see anyone standing and waiting. This was impressive.

5. To follow up #4...constant motion. Everyone is moving on offense. Rotation. Drives. Crashing boards.

6. Shooting - combination of being able to hit layups, short to mid range and the three. No weaknesses here.

How does that compare to the game and team now? First, we rarely have this type of quality depth available anymore. Part of that is players choosing to go where they can play, part the emergence of other good teams (choices), and part recruiting. Next year would have been a bit unprecedented if Donarski and Fritz had chosen to stay. Second, the game has evolved. There are better athletes across the board now. Could the 99-00 team still thrive today? No doubt. They were superb. The biggest take for me is re-evaluating how the offense flows. Other teams are playing better defense today, but there are still some good takeaways. Something many have clamored for is more movement on offense. Is that a by-product of limited depth? Perhaps. But watching the 99-00 team attack was a thing of beauty. I'd love to see our team become more aggressive, but it will depend on giving players needed breaks. I was trying to research the minutes per game stats, but the historical data isn't coming up right now.

Final thought...if you have access to this video. Watch it. Both teams were amazing and represent the pinnacle of Iowa State basketball.

What's your favorite hot sauce?

I love a good hot sauce, and I use it for lots and lots of applications. But it has to be more than just heat. It's got to bring some flavor to the table.
I'm a big fan of Cholula's products, specifically their chipotle and chili garlic varieties.
And the original Huy Fong Sriracha is a staple for certain dishes.
I also really like Trader Joe's Green Dragon sauce, which is basically just pureed jalapeno and garlic.
And throw in some Mike's Hot honey, for good measure.

I know that there are plenty of other options that have their fans, but those are the ones I keep.

What kind of hot sauces are in your fridge/pantry?

Look-Ahead/Promo: CF Sitcom Bracket Selection Show

After I found a sitcom bracket on twitter the idea was brought forth to do a CF Sitcom bracket where unlike the Twitter bracket a long range of shows from 50's through today was considered and included. The small but mighty selection committee has been working on a bracket and we are now in the finishing touches.

This thread is to give people a heads up that the "selection show" thread will be coming out Sunday night.

What's growing? The garden thread.

I've been posting in the lawn care threads but I wanted to start something on gardening.

So fanatics, what's growing in your garden this year? I'll go first. My garden size roughly doubled this year as that was the plan. Luckily I got seeds back in January before Covid, as it's very difficult to find seed now.

Strawberries - Albion variety, The first few are ripe today 5/21
Blackberries - Chester thornless
Tomatoes- 6 varieties, mostly F1 hybrids, 12 plants total. All indeterminates
Pole Bean- Blue Lake FM-1
Green Bean - Derby, and BlueLake
Zucchini - Black Beauty and Sunstripe
Yellow Squash - Saffron
Pattypan Squash- Sunburst, and heirloom green
Watermelon- Sweetie Pie
Sweet Corn - I can't remember
Asparagus - martha washington
Peppers - assorted types, mostly bells but a few jalapenos
Garlic- some mystery variety a friend gave me years ago
Peas- don't know the variety anymore. I save seed each year.
Malabar spinach- waiting to plant until it gets hotter
Basil
Cilantro
Sage
Mint
Thyme

Road Game Tickets for BYU

I live in SLC and have a lot of friends and family who are interested in coming out to Utah for the BYU game this fall. Has anyone had experience getting tickets for away games through ISU for larger groups? If so, who do we need to get in contact with? Or would it make sense just to buy them directly through BYU when single game tickets are on sale? TIA.

New CRTC Athletes

Nice to see Marcus and Sam sticking around. Getting Reineri in the room is HUGE for our lightweights and their development. He has a win over Gilman in 2020 and is an extremely high caliber wrestler for the CRTC.

Friday OT #1 - Not Gonna Do It

@madguy30 gave me three great topics that all work together for this week. I keep wavering between using them separately or together - I will just do separate.

What is something on which you refuse to spend a lot of money, but could (and some people do)?

For example - I have a friend who spent $600 on tickets for a concert for one artist, not a festival or anything. I love concerts - but I can’t see myself spending $600 for a show unless I got to sit right in the lead singer’s lap for its entirety. And even then, it had better be a pretty great lap.

What are yours?

On That Note: 'Remember' to make a 'Memory'

Welcome back to “On That Note,” CycloneFanatic’s weekly music exploration, co-hosted by @MeanDean, @CycloneRulzzz and me, cyclones500.

For our latest segment, we’re seeking songs that have forms of “remember” and “memory,” in the title or lyrics. (Terms like “recall” and “recollection” would fit, too.)

Here's one to get us into remembering mode.

“There are places I remember.”

New Dishwasher Recommendations

My wife and I recently moved into a new house and it has a pretty inexpensive GE dishwasher. It is not that old (only 4 years old) and the racks are starting to rust some and it doesn't seem to clean very well. We are thinking about getting a new one soon to replace it. We had a Thermador at our old house (was going to go with Bosch but NFM had a great deal on an open box Thermador) so we got it since Thermador is a more expensive Bosch. We loved it. It was quiet, cleaned excelent, but it didn't dry plastics well at all. I know Bosch dishwashers are considered the Cadillac, but are pricey. I have heard good things about Kitchen Aid dishwashers, but don't know much about them. Does anyone have recommendations?
