The great washing machine debate

I actually have no idea if there is any debate here or not, but I wanted to pick CF brains about their experience with certain washing machines. Anyway, we're in the market for a new washing machine (and dryer) and I've done a decent amount of research, but I'd like to get some additional first-hand experience if possible. The brand I've been looking into most is Speed Queen. They're the throwback, old school, never-going-to-break machines and have an amazing reputation. My only concern with them is the drum size. We're a family of 5 and at ~3.5 cubic feet, it's not very big. However, my understanding is that these things can be completely filled to the top of the drum, versus these new HE machines that fill-up around 60% at most. Maytag has a similar type model, as does Bosch. Anyone have experience with these machines? I'd be curious about the large-sized HE models that people have and how they've performed.

Scotland trip

I'm planning trip to Scotland next year in September. We'll be there 14 days. So far we have reservations at a B&B in Pitlochry and plan to get tickets to the Braemar Gathering. We also have reservations for a one day group tour of a few Outlander filming locations. Edinburgh and Inverness are two areas we will definitely travel to and stay in or near.

Any other suggestions for where to stay, what to go see or what is not worth it? Experiences you've had? Suggested coats/shoes? For some reason people seem to really focus on that, but IMO it seems like a good waterproof jacket is needed.

Friday OT #1 - As I Live and Breathe

I personally live and die by my Google Calendar in personal life, Outlook Calendar for work. If crap isn’t on our calendars, it isn’t real and only things on the calendars get precedence. Someday when I am in a retirement home, my calendar is going to alert me when it is time for Bingo and applesauce.

Do you have an app/program/website that is integral to your daily life, and you could never go back to life before it?

15 years at Cyclone Fanatic

A few months ago @coolerifyoudid posted he's been at CF for 10 years and today marks 15 years for me.

I said it in another thread but it's worth repeating. I'm tremendously grateful for @Jeremy's vision and bringing CF to all of us.

Also big thanks to the current ownership group and @ChrisMWilliams for all their efforts in always looking to improve CF and make it the amazing message board that it is.

I love that at CF yes the main focus is our beloved Cyclones but that it's open to all aspects of life. If I had a dime for every story I've told a co-worker or family member that started out with "at this ISU message board Cyclone Fanatic" I'd been pretty well off.

I also mentioned that when I was going to do my 15 year anniversary it would include my first thread which many long term fanatics probably can't recall but I was one of many who did an introduction thread. Below is the thread and also below is my first post from said thread.

New to Cy Fanatic

Hello all,

I joined this forum a week or so ago and wanted to introduce myself. I think I will like this site. I am a fan of all things ISU but my favorite is WBB. I'm glad to see this site has a forum specifically for ISU wbb discussion because other ISU forums do not have that.

Now I'm still a regular on the ISU wbb boards, but many people would probably have that down the list of what I'm known for. So while reminiscing I decided to take a look back at everything I've been apart of and continue to do.

Things started with the game of Mafia. In June of 2011 @ISUAgronomist did a old school WWF theme and I jumped in. He paired me in a regular innocent pm role with the similar named CyclonesRule.

I was immediately hooked and second game I played was a @CyCrazy College football themed mafia and I was paired in a 2 person Nebraska mafia with @MLawrence who like me was a rookie in the previous WWF theme.
Mlaw and I would go on to win with both of us surviving till the end. It's probably more impressive than anything Nebraska has done in that time. :)

I would then go on to mayor or host the games. Between hosting and playing I've probably been in 24-36 games and by some given the nickname "The Godfather" although there are 2 godfathers 1 being the movie and the other our own John Walters. One highlight as mayor was the @Fitzy @Farnsworth who is the real Leonard in the TMNT Theme.

But the mafia moment that is dear to my heart is when over 50 fanatics came together to play a game of mafia dedicated to our friend and Mlaw's brother longtimeclone who we lost suddenly and way to soon in 2015.

In 2013 was the first football gameday thread. I did the KU/ISU Ice Bowl. I then did 3 more FB games in 2014 and started regularly doing football in 2015.

Basketball gamedays started with conference play in 2014. Only extended break I took was in 2021 as recovered from covid putting me in the hospital and the recovery time I took after I was released.

2013 and 2014 saw me host 2 versions of CF Big Brother both won by @mj4cy .

2013 also saw the start of CF pickup ball. I was one of few non students but the main core was CF who were in school. Now obviously they are done with school and many have found significant others and have little fanatics of their own. :)

It was also the CF pickup crew along with some other fanatics who came together when I was going through a particular rough time and presented me with and ISU 32 jersey with Rulzzz on the back. It's something I will always treasure.

2016 I started hosting CF NFL survivor. In 2018 I took over hosting duties for @Omaha Cy Big 12 elimination game and in 2020 I took over for @Cy$ hosting college football survivor where I get lots of behind the scenes help from @ImJustKCClone.

In April of 2018 I gave a topic suggestion to @MeanDean and @cyclones500 for their On That Note series. They brought me on as a contributor but then I soon was asked to join and make the duo a trio. I was very honored as we all are spaced out age wise where we cover a wide range of music tastes. They have become 2 very good friends.

Then this offseason when I should be resting up I've added becoming a regular committee member and host for the CF Tournament Bracket Series. I plan for this to be a regular thing going forward in offseason's going forward to help pass the time.

On the topic of good friends at the top of the list is @Cycsk. I met him around the Alamo Bowl and I helped him pass out Alamo Bowl medals. He also gave me a chance to experience Cy's House of Trivia in 2022 and this winter bought a ticket so I could experience the return of Hunter to Hilton. He's an amazing person and glad to call him a friend.

Usually on message boards you rarely get to put a face to a username, but I've met many people on CF and everyone has been amazing and cool. This board is truly like an extended family.

I'm sure I've missed something but I can always post it later on in the thread. it's been an amazing 15 years and here is to many more.

On That Note: We Are "3" Together

Welcome to another edition of On That Note. OTN is a weekly music post hosted alternately by @cyclones500, @CycloneRulzzz and yours truly.

This week we launch our annual albums-by-decade series.

For part 1, post your favorite LPs released in 1963 and/or 1973. (Those years only, NOT the entire decade.)

Include 3 or 4 sound clips. In addition to the tracks, we encourage you to expound on why the album is meaningful, including personal history of your relationship with the record and its music.

Choices should focus on studio albums. Avoid greatest hits/live LPs/compilations. We’ll allow it, but it should be a definitive element of an artist’s body of work that isn’t otherwise generally available from studio output.

If someone posts an album on your list before you get to it, you still may reference it, but use different song clips.

(There are dozens of best/favorite album lists, by year released, online.)

And, If you’re more singles-oriented, you may substitute top singles from either of those years.

(In subsequent weeks, we’ll do 83/93 and 03/13)

*******
Since I neglected to give a heads-up about this topic I'll start by posting some of my favorite singles from 1963. For many years I thought 1963 was a horrible year for music. There were some clunkers that were big hits, but over the years I've discovered some real gems, many of which were ignored at the time.

My first 5 from 1963:

To this point, the Temptations had yet to have a hit. And this one didn't quite make it either, though it did get some attention regionally. A great early Motown side written by Smokey Robinson

Out of Davenport's Fredlo recording studio this rocker came in 1963.

This is the ORIGINAL version of this song. Later covered by Irma Thomas - whose version the Rolling Stones covered. I love this one, too.

Another sorta obscure soul thing.

Something a bit more mainstream. Bobby Bare

Way too early starting lineup talk for the 23-24 season

Impatiently waiting to see what happens in the portal, and already excited and wanting to talk about next year. My prediction today for starting lineup by Big 12 play is:
PG - Lipsey
SG - Transfer
SF - Momcilovic
PF - Biliew
C - King

Backup PG - Williams
Backup SG - Watson/Hamilton
Backup SF - Watson
Backup PF - Ward/Fish
Backup C - Jones/Ward

Momcilovic is too skilled offensively to not start, but he probably wont at the beginning of the year.

King at ony 6'7 playing the 5 could be interesting, but he's a junkyard dog and very capable.

The Floods of 1993 Now 30 Years Later

Ch 13 today had a story with some old clips today so a good time to dig up some stuff on this.

I was 14 at the time and remember the Dallas County Fair was going on. Friday afternoon we were told to pack up and take everything home as they expected the Racoon River to go out of its banks and flood the fairgrounds in Adel overnight. We took our livestock and tack home that evening and waited on word if we'd have our show the next morning. Didn't have internet or cell phones at the time so had to rely on the news or land lines to get updates. So we were up early that morning to get ready until we eventually got a call that the fairgrounds had flooded. I remember volunteering to fill sandbags some days after that as the Racoon kept creeping into the towns near us.

Crazy to think now into a 3rd straight summer of drought how hectic things were with all the rain we got that year.

USL to Vote on Relegation

Love this move. I’ve discussed this in other topics, but ultimately I think relegation would help soccer keep growing, and maybe at an even faster pace in the US. Probably a pipe dream, but maybe one day MLS and USL will merge and then the relegation system gets implemented across the whole system.

I need a Hok joke.

Writing a card for the milestone birthday of a longtime family friend. For years they have sent cards to us ending with "Go Hawks" knowing full well where I went to college. I want to end the sentimental sappy parts with a joke, preferably at the football team's expense. I saw some funny ones last fall about the defense and scoring but can't remember now. Nothing raunchy or really inappropriate but a good zinger would be appreciated.

Give me your best.

Please and thank you.

Cyclone Fans and The Wave

Did anybody get a photo or video of all the Cyclone fans waving back from the hospital? I haven't been able to find one.

There were over-sized cardinal and gold hands waving back from nearly every window on the top floor. One whole window was covered with a sheet for #66 Josh Knipfel. And there were plenty of other windows with Cyclone fans waving.

It was really cool to see how much the Cyclone fans showed their colors while participating.
