Golf in Branson

Well…I’ve been put in charge of setting up golf for a family get together in Branson in a couple of weeks. Anyone played down there/have any suggestions?

I’ve been looking today and seems pretty expensive. Might have narrowed it down to Pointe Royal Golf Village or Ledgestone Country Club, but if there is something else in that range that I’m missing, I’m all ears.

[The Athletic - Paywall] Why Iowa State is tweaking its identity this summer with more offensive options

Article from The Athletic's Brian Hamilton from the men's basketball summer workouts. Focus is on ISU's focus on maintaining hardnosed defensive identity while building more capabilities on offense. Quite a few observations on the newcomers, with quotes from TJ and many of the players.

Williams and Blum interview The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel

Didn't see this posted yet.

Just listened to this and I don't know. I get the perspective that he is "just reporting what he is hearing" and I see that to an extent, but it just seemed to me to be more of the same not understanding the reality of the situation.

For example he mentioned that he thinks they are catering to much towards pulling the NFL casuals who just want to see Alabama, but he seems to miss the point that the only reason that they can be pulled in is that the games are already a really big deal. This whole issue comes down to the big schools and the media companies are going to be in for a rude awakening when half the country just stops caring. We have already seen this play out with NASCAR.

I don't think that he wants us to fail, but he did nothing to dispel the notion that uneducated people make stupid decisions that will cause us to fail.

Last Honors

I have been on this board for a while, so I will share this here.

My Dad grew up a Hawkeye fan, on a farm outside Columbus Junction. He and my mom were both Hawk fans (she grew up outside Winfield), but when I left Muscatine to go to Iowa State, he cheerfully embraced my Cyclones.

Upon retirement, after my mom had passed, he moved to Tempe (AZ) and embraced sports in a way that he had often chided me for as a child. If the Cyclones, Hawkeyes, Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Mercury, Sun Devils or Wildcats were on TV, he was watching.

I just had to tell him where colleges with non geographical names were. Like, say, Clemson. He made a list. And I was his TV Guide.

And the very best gift I ever bought for he and my stepmom was several years ago, a 49” digital, flat screen TV that allowed him to see everything…replacing their old CRT TV. Every time I called them, they’d thank me for that television.

Love that guy.

Today, the 91 year old Marine Corps vet received his final honors.

On That Note: We Are ‘3’ Together: Part 3 of 3

Welcome to another edition of “On That Note,” CF’s weekly music series, co-hosted by @MeanDean, @cyclones500 and myself.

This week, we feature part 2 of our annual albums-by-decades series. Post your favorite LPs released in 2003 and/or 2013 or anything from this current year of 2023. Include 3 or 4 sound clips. In addition, we encourage you to expound on why the album is meaningful, such as personal details of your relationship with the record and its music.

Focus is on studio albums. Avoid greatest hits/live LPs/compilations. We’ll allow it, but it should be a definitive element of an artist’s body of work that isn’t otherwise generally available from studio output.

If someone posts an album on your list before you get to it, you still may reference it, but use different song clips.

If you’re more singles-oriented, you may substitute top singles from either of those years.

Light The Bridge

The most successful PR campaign in the NBA this season was easily Sacramento's 'Light The Beam', where after wins they would illuminate a beam light on top of their stadium for the city to see.

I think it would be cool if there were special victory lights on the bridge that would be lit after wins so Iowa State can have its own version. Thoughts?

T.J. Otzelberger on Colorado's move to the Big 12

What T.J. Otzelberger had to say about the possibility of Colorado joining the Big 12:

Wideout Brett Eskildsen Commits!

A 10.70 100m may help with that “separation” issue.

Tailgating TV/Media Setup Recommendations

With the pandemic hanging around I have a few family members who will be tailgating this season, but aren't comfortable in close quarters inside the stadium. With that in mind, I want to rig up a TV so they can watch the game from our tailgating spot. What recommendations do y'all have?
  • I have a few Samsung Smart TVs and speakers, that much is covered
  • We don't have an RV
  • Best power supply / "quiet" generator options?
  • I've never had dish/satellite of any kind, any reliable device add-ons to get a boosted 4G/5G signal for streaming?
  • What else am I forgetting? (wrong answers accepted)
I may be in over my head, but I'm not limiting this fact-finding mission to a budget, so let me hear it all.

OT #2 - E(a)rnest Goes to Camp

The other OT thread sort of made me wonder - what entirely earnest cartoons are/were your favorites?

Not adult ones or tongue in cheek. I am talking 100% intended for kids.

Rugrats, Animaniacs, Doug. These were my jam.

When Farnald Degand used to get on the court, Janny and I would say “Hey Faaarnold” to each other literally every time.

What are yours?

Anyone else ever have at least one UFO/UAP experience before? I know some people will probably come in this thread and scream “tin foil hat!” But matter of fact the universe is much too large for us to be the only half way intelligent life.

Anyways, my story goes back to about 2011. Buddy and I were just hanging out one night probably was 12:30AM or so when we walked to the back deck to let my dog outside. Right as we walk out I look up and there is the brightest white light I have ever seen just above the tree line hovering that stretched all the way down behind the neighborhood houses. In a blink of an eye it shot up and was gone. Just gone like that. The whole experience made me feel strange as I couldn’t explain what the hell I just saw. I can’t really describe what it was other than just a circular bright ass white light. A light that wouldn’t be a drone or anything close to that as it was just way too bright and extraordinary. And a drone wouldn’t shoot off that fast and just disappear into what seemed thin air. Thankfully my friends and family are open minded and didn’t think I was a lunatic telling them about the experience. Actually once I mentioned the experience a lot of other friends and family shared some of their experiences as well.
