I have been on this board for a while, so I will share this here.
My Dad grew up a Hawkeye fan, on a farm outside Columbus Junction. He and my mom were both Hawk fans (she grew up outside Winfield), but when I left Muscatine to go to Iowa State, he cheerfully embraced my Cyclones.
Upon retirement, after my mom had passed, he moved to Tempe (AZ) and embraced sports in a way that he had often chided me for as a child. If the Cyclones, Hawkeyes, Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Mercury, Sun Devils or Wildcats were on TV, he was watching.
I just had to tell him where colleges with non geographical names were. Like, say, Clemson. He made a list. And I was his TV Guide.
And the very best gift I ever bought for he and my stepmom was several years ago, a 49” digital, flat screen TV that allowed him to see everything…replacing their old CRT TV. Every time I called them, they’d thank me for that television.
Love that guy.
Today, the 91 year old Marine Corps vet received his final honors.
