“Fit, feel, family” formed a theme for Iowa State’s early Class of 2024 signees

“Last Weekend”

CMC: “Fans will look back at last weekend and say that was one of the most important weekends for this program.”

He’s referring to the five late official visitors last weekend—who all committed and signed. Those five visitors:

David Coffey CB 6’2” 190 Chicago De La Salle
Sprinter who qualified for State in four events, ran a 10.98 100m there. Long and speedy, could be a star down the road.

Dominic Overby WR 6’4” 180 West Jordan (UT) HS
Went from 9 catches as a junior to 67 as a senior. Long and athletic with good hands. Ran a wind aided (4.4 mph) 10.73 100m, probably more an 11.0 guy as a junior. Lanky, has a chance to fill out in a good S&C program—that worked for a two star Hakeem Butler, right?

Alijah Carnell DL 6’5” 290 Las Vegas Bishop Gorman HS
Bishop Gorman is a talent laden powerhouse. His junior year Alijah played JV ball as a 6’4” 240 defensive end, before filling out to 6’5” 295. Athleticism and size suggests either an Enyi/TO type strongside end—or a bonus sized nose tackle.

Beau Goodwin 6’4” 200 LB Kingsley-Pierson
An all around four sport athlete, who will finally concentrate on one. 6’5” high jumper, flipped from South Dakota State. In before “next Mike Rose”.

Garret Rutledge 6’6” 295 Council Bluffs Lewis Central
CMC seemed to feel that Garret was the steal of the bunch. I’m not much of a judge of OL, generally I simply settle for assessing base athleticism—and Garret certainly runs well.

But what caught my eye was an intensity and determination to finish that I saw in Brendan Black’s HS video—albeit at a different level.

Missed the latter half of his junior season to injury.

Idea on College Football’s Future Outlook

Not sure if you guys have heard Chip Kelly's take on college football but here it is. He said what should be done is take the power 5 conferences in football only and put them all together and divide the teams up just like they do in the NFL. You would have a North, South, East, and West divisions with subdivisions in each. Then you would still have your 12 team playoffs. All the other sports, including basketball would stay in the conferences just like they are now. The idea being football drives all college athletics. Football teams would only have to travel 6-8 times a season. They can afford that. Basketball and all other sports would stay in the conference that is close in proximity. Currently sports teams like softball, tennis, soccer, and etc all have to travel multiple times across the country a couple times a week because of the new conferences. He basically is saying keep conferences for all sports except football. Throw all college football together. You would take all funding from television and streaming networks and split them amongst the 64-68 power 5 schools. Football would fund all sports at there institutions like they basically do now. Can you imaging all the finding from all the networks! It would be equal for all teams. I think this is a GREAT idea and it will get some traction!

Iowa State (6-4) vs. UNI (1-7)

Hilton Coliseum– Ames, Iowa

Wednesday, December 20, 2023 – 6:30 p.m. CT

LIVE STATS

Back in October, UNI was selected by conference coaches, SID’s and media as the MVC Women’s Basketball Preseason Favorite, and they had two players selected to the Preseason All-MVC 1st Team – Juniors Grace Boffeli & Maya McDermott.

The Panthers started the season with a victory of Green Bay on November 6, then got hammered at home by Iowa 94-53 to begin a seven-game losing streak. UNI played in the same Las Vegas tournament as ISU, with two common opponents.

11/24 - Syracuse 71 - UNI 54 VERSUS 11/25 - Syracuse 81 – ISU 69

11/24 – Vanderbilt 68 – ISU 53 VERSUS 11/25 Vanderbilt 68 – UNI 64

While ISU holds a lop-sided advantage in the all-time series, the last time these two teams met, the #7 Cyclones took home a nail-biting, 88-85 victory. That matchup saw both forward Grace Boffeli and guard Maya McDermott score 20+ points with a career-high 26 points coming from Boffeli and 22 coming from McDermott.

Iowa State is ranked No. 56 in the NET rankings. This will be the fifth time this season the Panthers have faced an opponent that is currently ranked in the top 60 and the eighth time an opponent is currently in the top 100. UNI holds the second-best average opponent NET rank in the nation with an average rank of 56. The only team ranked higher than UNI is UConn with an average opponent NET rank of 55. The Panthers also boast the ninth-hardest NET, non-conference strength of schedule. As of December 17, the Panthers have the fourth-hardest strength of schedule per the Massey ratings behind UConn, South Carolina, and Maryland.

On That Note: My Favorite Part

This week, we’re looking for songs that have a specific segment that's a favorite for you. It can be instrumental or lyrical (or even something like a sound effect).

If it's in the lyrics, please include the line along with your post. If it’s an instrumental portion, note approximate time it occurs within the track.

“On That Note” is presented weekly by @MeanDean, @cyclones500 and myself.

Best (charted and popular) late in career release from a band

Most bands put out their best stuff in their earlier years and then really struggle to make anything popular or relevant in later years. Heard Thunderstruck today and while not my favorite band by any means, knew that it came out around 1990 which was relatively late in their cycle (formed in 1973) -so that was one that popped in my head and made me think of it.

I'm struggling to think of others -my favorites like Green Day and Billy Joel really tail off IMO or stopped writing completely. BonJovi keeps putting stuff out but, yeesh.

I do really still like Weezer's new stuff, and I guess they're nearly 30 years in -and some of it is still charting.

SIGNING DAY CENTRAL 2024

Hey y'all. Put together one of the biggest projects I've ever done for CF over the past couple weeks. I wanted to go all out for Signing Day this year and make it the norm for recruiting coverage here at CycloneFanatic.

It took a lot trying to track down all of the athletes for interviews, and we're still working on adding some more ahead of Wednesday. There's only about three that we haven't gotten a hold of out of the list, so stay tuned for that.

Appreciate all of you diehards for following along and I hope you enjoy it!

Question about in state tuition

I have to leave Iowa and move to KC this summer for work reasons. My children are not happy, they have their heart set on going to ISU and are worried about paying out of state tuition when they come back. My oldest son would be a nonresident for two years and my youngest son would be a nonresident for four years.

Just wondering if there is a work around for them and what is the difference between in state tuition and out of state tuition?

Thanks in advance for any help on this.
