ISU PFF Offensive Line Grade Analysis

I understand PFF grades can be controversial... however, I do think outside of getting the grades directly from the coaching staff (which will never happen) it's about the best analysis you can get for a player's down to down performance. There are also very limited stats for offensive linemen so it is tricky to evaluate without some kind of grading system.

I took a look at our PFF grades for our offense overall and did a deeper dive on the Offensive Line since I believe this group is critical to our performance going forward and was a significant (negative) outlier in our grading since Campbell's first season (2016).

Overall, strong gains across almost all positions on offense, except offensive line where we took a pretty significant step back since 2015.

Offensive Line Grading Analysis:
First, I took a look at our progression the last 8 years. A couple things jumped out.

1) Our best year was 2015 when we ranked #20 nationally in average overall grades on the offensive line (78.2 avg grade).

2) Since 2015, we have only had a player grade out over 70 three times (Brian Bobek 2016, Patrick Scoggins 2016, and Trevor Downing 2021). In both 2014 and 2015 our average OL grade was over 70. In 2015 five offensive linemen graded out over 70, and in 2014 four grade out over 70.

3) Finally, none of the Offensive Linemen brought in from the 2016 class forward, have graded out above the 2014-2015 average grade of 74.8 (best grade was Trevor Downing 72.9 in 2021). The best offensive line grade since 2015 was Patrick Scoggins in 2016 but he was a JUCO in the class of 2015).

Next, I took our Offensive Line grades by season and compared them to Kansas State, Iowa, and the P5 Average Grades:

Every year since 2015 (when we ranked #20 overall) we have graded out below the P5 average on the offensive line. KSU has the highest 8 year average grade in the B12 (#10 overall, OU is #11). Iowa has the highest 8 year average offensive line grade and is consistently in the top 10 year to year. Outside of 2020, KSU has consistently been in the top 10-20.

My Take Away:

1) Offensive Line Must Improve
2) We have had some of the greatest success in program history with limitations on OL
3) I have faith that Campbell will get this turned around; when that happens we win 10+

*NOTE: PFF NCAA grades only go back to 2014. So the data sets cover 2014-2021. The average grades are based on (snap count * grade for each player)/(total snaps) = Avg Grade Per Snap. I removed players with fewer than 100 snaps on the offensive line or fewer than 4 games with playing time; for skill positions I eliminated players with fewer than 50 snaps and fewer than 4 games on offense to focus on players with significant contributions each year.

Headline kind of speaks for itself here:

Fly With Cy going to Austin this year

Just got an e-mail from the Iowa Lottery that they're having a "Fly With Cy", contest again this year, and it's going to Austin!!

I was lucky enough to win last year, so I doubt I have much of a chance, but still try, must I!!!

If I do get lucky, I pretty sure I'll sell the plane tix and cruise down I-35. I'm a big guy and didn't fit very well on the charter they had set up. That's not their fault, though. I was also a little disappointed we were so far from the Strip, although that probably saved a few hundred in gambling losses... My wife had never been, so it was a cool experience for her no matter what.

All in all, it was a great time. The new stadium is sweet, and was right across the street from our hotel. We kicked some serious butt, albeit over struggling and rebuilding program. Maybe we should consider adding the Rebels and maybe even Hawaii. They'd both be nice destination trips every other year or so, and joining our conference might help them beef up recruiting and attendance to the point they're more competitive.

Anyway, for the average sized people, Texas should be a blast and one last chance to watch us kick their behinds on the turf. If you see Earl Campbell, tell him BDS says hi, I think he'll know who I am.

MonsterVerse Thread

Since we've got threads for pretty much every other cinematic universe, figured it was about time I started a MonsterVerse one. I've been a pretty big fan of all the movies so far. Anyway, l figured I'd kick things off by showing they started filming already on the Godzilla vs Kong sequel.

There is also the upcoming MonsterVerse AppleTV+ series

How much did Lincoln Riley know?

When did Lincoln Riley know that USC was moving to the B1G?

  • From the start of his recruitment to USC, used to lure him

    Votes: 41 37.3%
  • During negotiations for the USC HC job

    Votes: 29 26.4%
  • After he accepted the position

    Votes: 40 36.4%

Has there been any reports on how much Riley knew before he took the job at USC? Did he go there expecting the move to the B1G? Was that a point that helped recruit him?

To me it seems unlikely that he had no knowledge prior to him accepting the position

Friday OT #2 - Dumpster Diving

I got a $100 gift certificate to Target for a photography session I did for some friends. My boss and I were discussing yesterday how we both hate going into grocery stores and no stores. I mentioned that I have to hit up Target this weekend, and she reminded me it is move-in weekend for apartments. All those parents optimistically buying cleaning supplies…

What is your take on dumpster diving? Have you ever grabbed anything from the side of the road? What was it, and was it worth the experience?

I used to have a coworker in her upper 50s who made it a sport on move-out day to go through all the dumpsters in Campustown and grab stuff (really nasty pots and pans, etc). She would take the day off of her well-paying job to do it. The practice always struck me as a great way to contract hepatitis at her age!

NIL fund created for Texas Tech Lady Raider Basketball players

Different group than the one funding the football NIL but the Lady Raiders get the same payout, $25K annually. Smart to pay the same amount as football. I'm surprised the Lady Raiders NIL was announced before the mens basketball NIL, which I assume will happen. Anyway, the Lady Raiders were the first Tech team to win a NCAA team championship so there is a soft spot for them among many alumni.
