Your Comedian Mount Rushmore

Mine
Chapelle, Carlin, Williams, Rock

Of Comedians I've seen live

Carlin, Chapelle, Lewis Black, Jim Jefferies

They really should be sorted into categories. For the Family Friendly category, ie being funny without dropping the "f" bomb, I would nominate (in no particular order)

Dmitri Martin
Jeff Dunham
Greg Hahn

I have seen all three of these live so that probably factors in as well.

For Dirty old man...no one can top the Benny Hill Show!

Hard to pick 4.

Chappelle
Dangerfield
Pryor
Carlin

^Not necessarily my favs, but seems like the most obvious to me based on longevity & cultural influence.

Here’s who makes ME laugh the hardest:

Anthony Jeselnik
Katt Williams
Ron White
Dave Chappelle
John Mulaney
Nick Swardson

[edit] I’m only considering stand up.

I’ll open a can of worms, but I’m one of those people that don’t find female comics funny. It’s not a sexist thing because I genuinely want to enjoy their routine, but I feel like Amy Schumer, Nikki Glaser, Sarah Silverman, etc. all have the same act and it’s not funny.

I have a theory on this. I'm guessing stand-up is a really rough career to get started in. Seedy clubs, tough crowds and travel in a very male-dominated profession. For a woman to get established, she has to have an extra level of toughness to put up with a lot of the crap. As a result, you get a lot of acts that have that "shock value" style of humor that are overly crass.

We end up with Lisa Lampanelli and Margaret Cho instead of intelligent humor from someone like Ellen DeGeneres or Tina Fey.

This is probably true. I get annoyed with the “I sleep around so let me tell you stories about it” humor. I don’t care for it from male comics either.

Pete Davidson is a great minimalist comedian. The great ones can make you laugh with just a glance, a single word.

I've always thought Amy Schumer's stand up was pretty funny. Who's she stolen from?

mill put some links tomorrow but if you go to Amy Schumer joke theft on YouTube it’s unreal the amount of material she has taken and played dumb about it. Stuff that there is no way you could accidentally have the same thought. It’s brutal to watch. Also watch Dennis Leary steal jokes. It’s bad.

here is one video

I know about Denis Leary, he ripped off his entire persona from Bill Hicks. Classic quote from Hicks about Leary, who had been his friend... "I have a scoop for you. I stole his act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and to really throw people off, I did it before he did."

To me, Chappelle is in a class all his own. But to pick 4, I'd go:

Chappelle
Burr
Rock
I don't know...maybe Sam Kinneson or Jim Jeffries. Or Ron Funches, just for his laugh.

1. Patrice O'Neal
2. Anthony Jeselnik
3. Chris Rock
4. Reno Collier
Honorable Mentions: Greg Giraldo, Will Sasso, Theo Von, Nick Swardson,
Jon Reep, Bobby Lee, and TJ Miller

This is a fantastic topic, i am forced to leave so many off this list that it is painful.

What do you do with Cosby? I still think Bill Cosby: Himself is the best stand up act I have ever seen. I laugh through almost the whole thing and he never goes blue. But the guy is a serial rapist.

1. Murphy
2. Kinison
3. Chapelle
4. Lewis Black

Lenny Bruce fills the role of George Washington. He was the first mainstream "blue" comedian.

Richard Pryor fills the role of Abe Lincoln. He did amazing work across different platforms, film and stand-up as is talked about and recognized by numerous generation of fans and fellow comedians.

Mitch Hedberg might be kind of like Teddy Roosevelt. He didn't have the multi-generational recognition for greatness but he is widely recognized by most comedians as one of the best. Similar to how Teddy Roosevelt is on Mt Rushmore for starting the Natl Park Service.

Rodney Dangerfield would be my Thomas Jefferson. He was a sort of founding father who was a leader in stand-up and in film. He also expanded the trade through giving young comedians a chance at his comedy club in NY.
