Your Best Johnny Orr Stories here.

Great links. He just lost the recruiting battle for Magic Johnson. And he was coach of the year in 1976 when Indiana won the championship (undefeated?).

Anyone know when those were made? It had to be late 80s/early 90s. And is that the old Hickory Park (like original, not second building) in the background?

I am kind of surprised I don't remember seeing those before.

IIRC, they used to sell those songs on cassette at Hickory Park. My college roommate would always play that damn thing when we would ride down to the games. I never knew there were videos though. Catchy tunes. I think I will quote them for my siggy....

I remember once on the Johnny Orr show;

Announcer: "Wayman Tisdale sick, did not start the game"
Johnny: "Ah hell, he wasn't sick, played 36 minutes"

I don't have any stories of my own, but my dad often talks about how Johnny used to speak at a Cyclone Club dinner every summer in my hometown. One year, someone asked Coach which recruits he was most excited about, and he was going on about this incredible shooter from the South Side of Chicago, but added the caveat "he's sure no Rhodes Scholar, though, I can tell you that!"

He was talking about Sam Mack, who of course went on to rob the Burger King on Lincoln Way during his freshman year.

Brand new story: Johnny Orr stole the front page of the Des Moines Register (and the front sports page) from Iowa on the day they are playing in a January bowl.

Way to stick it to them one more time Coach.

Just opened the mail and my wife's uncle from Cedar Rapids, who is a Hawk fan, sent us this section of the Register. He wrapped it in Hawkeye paper (an old poster) but still a pretty thoughtful gesture. Fortunately he's an uncle by marriage and not bloodline.

I've had them in and out of my head the last few days, kind of unfortunately. :smile:
