You should root for UNI.

I hope they win the whole dang thing. To cheer against an instate team we didnt even play this year is weak. we couldnt get out of the first round, so the fear of people judging who is the best based on how they do in the tournament is already done

My wife said she will root for the Panthers. That will have to be good enough. I got my fill of Mvc basketball watching Mcdoormat.

I know you're in the dumps. You lost a game you should have won and that sucks. But there are good reasons you should want UNI to win it all.

1. We are a home team, even for you. 11 of our 16 players are from the state of Iowa. Rooting for us is rooting for your state.
2. $$$. We are not as financially self-sufficient as ISU or UofIowa. The MVC doesn't give us big TV money. We don't sell out a huge stadium for football and we usually have fewer home games anyway as we go after more money. We do what we can, but we end up needing financial support from the State. NCAA Tournament money for UNI, therefore, is money for everyone in the state. Rooting for UNI is rooting for your own pocketbook.
3. Learn new things. UNI is quite different from ISU in terms of basketball strategy. Some fans watch a team like UNI or Virginia and think that nothing is happening. Or that certain players, like Jeremy Morgan, disappear on the court and have no impact. Let me tell you, even if he has few points and assists, he is having a HUGE impact. When you watch UNI, pick one player and just watch him the whole time. You'll learn a lot about what defense is and it will make you a better fan of the sport.
4. We root for you, too. UNI and ISU have very little reason to wish ill on each other. Over the last few years, UNI and UofIowa have both been interested in the same players. Some we got; some they got. So a strong UNI hurts IofIowa (especially for any players out there who realize they don't want to play for a psycho coach). But there doesn't seem to be that overlap between UNI and ISU. We don't recruit the same kids so we're not a threat to each other.
5. UNI is not just defense. UNI is sometimes criticized for being slow and boring. We slow things down when we're on defense - yes. We don't usually commit more than one player for offensive rebounding. The rest get back to set up for defense. So when we're on D, you can expect that if the shot clock isn't used, we made a mistake somewhere. But on offense, we're more fun to watch than we have been at times. You're not going to see the fireworks you're used to from your squad, but we make offense very efficiently.

There you have it - so find a purple shirt and keep rooting for your other team!

Go Panthers!!! Beat Louisville!! May UNI steal Hawkeye recruits for the next 100 years. :v_SPIN:

Agree with the first 2 but the 3rd in my experience is Not true. I know plenty of UNI fans that root for the cyclones plenty that root for the Hawks but most i know are UNI fans first and foremost.

My family members are mostly UNI grads. We're all big ISU fans (have been our whole lives).. Of the group I ran around with at UNI, maybe 3 were Iowa fans, a couple were ISU fans (not including me), one was a Nebraska fan, and the rest were UNI first. Yes there are a lot of Iowa fans, but they don't come anywhere close to making up 90% of the UNI fan base. A lot of Iowa State fans up there. Also, I would say a lot of UNI fans cheer for ISU and Iowa (when not playing UNI of course).

OP lost me when he said UNI fans support ISU.

The average UNI fan hates ISU even more than the average Hawkeye fan because BOTH of his favorite teams are trying to beat ISU since the average UNI fan is a Hawkeye fan at least in football.

We have about two posters here out of 1000s on this board who are UNI/ISU combo fans, compare that to 90% of UNI fans supporting Iowa football.

Sorry but the #s just don't work out for ISU fans to ever cheer for UNI, we're more likely to cheer for Drake in the rare times their teams are good. ISU fell flat on its face in the tournament but they did notch a boatload of wins over tournament teams (and not just in B12 play), WSU got ranked in the top 10 with ONE win over a solid tournament team, at home. That sort of nonsense has some fans cheering against WSU and UNI more than anything else.

I've never understood why UNI fans generally are Hawkeye fans over being ISU fans?

Forever, both ISU and UNI were inferior to the mighty Hawkeyes. ISU and UNI were always underdogs to them. So why wouldn't one underdog root for the other underdog in the state? That's what always confused me?

Now, over the last few decades, ISU has been almost on par with Iowa in athletics, so ISU is no longer considered the underdog to them for anyone born less than 20 years ago or so. So who knows?

I know that as an ISU fan, I always root for UNI when they play Iowa at anything, because I like seeing the underdog win. That's why I figured UNI fans would usually root for us against Iowa too, but it hardly ever seems that way. UNI fans seem like they like the Hawkeyes even more than UNI.... which is just odd.

This is the truth. Majority of UNI fans are pro-Iowa/anti-ISU, so of course we don't give a crap about cheering for them. Honestly I'm surprised ISU fans are as kind and courteous to them as they are.

The sane UNI fan much prefers Iowa State.

I hate the Hawks as much as you guys do.

At the Big 4 this guy next to me was wearing UNI gear and FLIPPING OUT cheering against UNI and raging on the refs the entire UNI/Iowa game, had to have used "we" to describe Iowa 100 times.

Real UNI fan behind me was so embarrassed by him.

Today we get to see how good the 2 MVC teams really are.

The selection committee did a great job outside of the Dayton bs selection and home seeding these are good second round matchups.

Im not sure the hoks aren't a matchup problem for the Zags if they come out hot they have enough size and athleticism. I could see them laying an egg and not looking anything like they did in the blowout.

Davidson sucked balls the A10 was pretty bad most of the field could have blown their doors off as well mind you but they matchup pretty well I'd take Aaron White to matchup on Witjer.

We do not hate the hoks, or the purplehoks for that matter. We just wish they did not exist. This state is only big enough for one real school, and that is Iowa State.

We're coming off a crushing loss, but if WSU loses today their season will have been a much bigger failure by every measurable. They're supposedly a "top ten" team, but if lose today, their entire season will be one good home and nothing else all year. ISU has a B12 tournament title and something like a dozen wins against the tournament field. Still absolutely sucks to bow out in first round but still a lot of big wins over the year, WSU has UNI @home to hang its hat on as of now.

And you should shut your dirty, whorish mouth, that's what I think you should do.:jimlad:

Yes, I hate the hoks. Don't care at all about the teacher college teams.
