Yellowstone - new TV "western"

Yeah I think the problem for me in season 4 was that I thought this seasons was gonna be about who put the hit on the Duttons AND how they’re gonna deal with the airport. They only took care of one which could’ve been resolved a lot quicker than dragging it out for 10 episodes. And they introduced the new head of Market Equities like she’s gonna be this big bad antagonistic character for a season but we only saw her what 2-3 episodes for very little time?

I don't know how that is going to work moving forward with him, but I hope they change the dynamic there.

I agree with this so much. Seems like every episode there's a scene where Beth is waiting in Jamie's office to torment him. I keep waiting for a plot twist where he turns the tables on Beth and John somehow but it never comes.

I have a hard time sympathizing with Jamie most of the time now that we know the whole story behind why Beth hates him. He took her to an Indian reservation clinic to get an abortion and failed to tell her before the procedure that part of that was being sterilized that she could never have children again. We also know it was Rip's child she was pregnant with too which I assume some day he finds out and that won't be pleasant for him either. That's a pretty big thing, she came to him for help and while she wanted to keep it a secret he had the choice to stand up to her and say it's her problem to deal with and she would have to accept the consequences but instead he cowered like he does as an adult and made a bad choice that comes back to bite him later.

Amongst the other things he has cowered on:
- He was responsible for that reporter's death when she started digging into the Dutton's when Jamie was running for office
- He allowed his biological father back into his life despite knowing he killed his mother and then ultimately had to kill him too to save himself from the wrath of the Duttons finding out he knew his dad put the hit out on them
- Time and time again doesn't stand up for himself, he lets others control him including John and Beth and to a lesser extent the mother of his child too

It all comes back to that poor decision he made in his youth with Beth's abortion really. Had he stood up for himself then and told Beth she needed to take responsibility for her decisions then maybe he has more confidence as an adult instead of always having that day haunt him where Beth got the upper hand and has something she can hold over his head for the rest of his life.

I do hope some day his character does find some happiness and confidence but in order for that to happen he had to learn not to be weak when faced with adversity. I would not be surprised that in season 5 the storyline will be John not running for governor with the mandate to Jamie that they will support him as long as he has the best interests of the ranch in mind. One thing I noticed in the finale is John told Beth he loved her which he never tells his children that and he asked Beth if he had lost another son meaning he still considers Jamie his son. He even had words with Garrett in the diner that implied he felt he gave Jamie more of a family than Garrett ever could. My guess is season 5 turns into some kind of homecoming for Jamie where they somehow embrace him again as part of their family? The only other path Jamie really has at this point is to completely separate himself from the Duttons and still be miserable having to fight them the whole way or commit suicide. He's never been much for confrontation so he probably will come back with his tail tucked between his legs and just accept his fate.

but want to say this .. Beth was about to
do something that will ruin her life. She
is about to go into a prison and kill the
man that she thinks attacked her
family. She knows there is a chance she
will not come back. She can't tell this
kid she is his mother and then leave him
abandoned again.
Beth is honest. It's tough sometimes
really tough but that's how she was
raised .. but it's always truthful .When I
read it I had the same feeling for them
both .But honestly ,not sure Beth in that
moment was ready to be that for anyone
.. She was out for vengeance and could
see nothing else . (There is a moment
where I hope you see the fight in her
after he calls her that )I think the heart
wants it but she has to protect that kid
from herself ...not sure that will make
sense. But let's see where the writer
will take them... I have hope x

The one thing I truly enjoyed this season is the growth in Jimmy, or as John Dutton now calls him "Jim". He went from a character that I didn't like at all, into one that I generally am cheering for. To see him mature in both looks and actions, and make some good decisions for a change, is fun to watch. The fact that he actually went to Iowa State is just an added bonus.

She told Jamie this when she was giving him "options" in the end. I found an episode summary that confirms what I was sure I heard: Yellowstone Season 4 Finale: Beth Dutton wrath Another Cast Member Killed – Deadline

"Option Two: Beth tells her new husband Rip about all this, and how Jamie orchestrated his sister’s abortion at a Native American free clinic, even though he knew but didn’t tell his sister that it meant sterilization for her and no chance to start a family when she was ready. And since the aborted baby was Rip’s, and since Rip will never be able to have a family now, Beth tells Jamie her husband will find him no matter where he runs, and tear him apart with his bare hands."

That changes everything. I'm now a huge fan of Jimmy and will watch 6666 or whatever the spinoff series is called. Got to support our own Iowa Stater's you know.

Not gonna lie, I was smiling and cheering for "Jim" when he returned to the Dutton Ranch with some confidence. Standing up to Mia, showing off his new roping skills, and 2 neat moments with Lloyd and Rip before he headed out. I've always said Lloyd treated him like he was his son and the emotional talk and hug when Lloyd asked if he was going back to Texas was kind of like watching a father telling his son he was proud of him. Then after all the crap he's been through with Rip for him to have some kind words was cool too. One of my favorite Rip lines ever was a couple season ago when he told Jimmy "I don't believe in luck but I sure as hell believe in stupid because you prove it to me every f'ing day." There was some other good ones over the past too between the 2 of them.

And let's not forget John telling Jim he doesn't owe him anything too. John has been mostly portrayed as this tough guy that doesn't care about anyone but himself and his ranch but like I mentioned above I caught some moments in the finale that he finally is showing a more caring side as he told Beth he loved her, referred to Jamie as his son, and he's been pretty kind to Carter this season too. Not sure why they did not put Tate in more episodes and him and John were becoming close too but I guess when Monica forced Kayce to move off the ranch there wasn't much story there for John and Tate I guess.

Jamie makes a terrible bad guy
Market Equities Chairwomen is an underutilized "bad-guy"
Beth's character lacks at least 5% of normal human empathy. It's a little over the top
Lloyd's season four was weird... I didn't like the direction Sheridan took him. More cowboy, please
Get rid of the buckle bunnies. They serve no purpose to the show anymore.
More Chairmen Rainwater and Mo please

Overall seasons 1-3 were SO STRONG that I should have expected less from season 4. I'm still a massive fan. But this was the shows worst season.

It was the "worst" of the 4 seasons I will give you that but overall it still had its moments that will keep me watching. Not sure if they have started shooting season 5 yet but I would hope that Taylor Sheridan would maybe take the fan feedback from season 4 and get things back on track to what makes the show so great. Just seems like there were way too many storylines that were crammed into this season that not many really were developed "deep" enough. Seemed like they were trying too hard to find ways to lead into the crossovers for 1883 and the upcoming 4 6's show instead of narrowing the scope of the storylines. Plus they have added multiple new characters in season 3 and 4 that are becoming popular that seems to eat into the time they have for stories involving the main characters.

Completely agree on growing the crossover stories. Since Sheridan (A group including him) is the new owner of the 6's ranch. I'm sure Paramount + and him want to get that show rolling.

I still loved watching it. Really hope they get back to deeper story telling in season 5 though. Most mega shows start to fade in the end for multiple reasons. Viacom has too much on the line to let this slip too far IMO
