X's and O's question

The SS is the traditional "eighth man in the box" for run defense, and covers receivers who run short to medium routes over the middle on pass plays.

The FS covers post routes and usually is the top defender on double coverage.

Using softball as an analogy, think of the FS as the center fielder, and like the CF, is the captain of the defensive backfield (the outfield) and usually calls any changes in coverage after a read on the offense; and the SS as the fourth outfielder that usually plays shallow and backs up the front seven (the infield).

What coverage would put the SS (or either safety) underneath middle? The only scheme I can think of would be man coverage with a robber. If they are walked up they will have some type of hook to curl or curl to flat. Wally rarely does any curl to flat and pretty much leaves the corner on an island. He basically gives up the pitch and catch to #1 if an offense is willing to take it.

For the OP. Iowa does a lot of traditional/easy to see things with their safeties and more traditional coverages. If you want to torture yourself and watch a Hawk game it will be easier to identify responsibilities.

Exactly, Iowa plays ALOT of base cover 2. Each safety on a hash and covering deep halves. Each CB covering the flat, OLB's covering hook-curl and MLB dropping in the middle.
