XFL Round 2?

I think the Alabama running back stated what most conventional voices will say to this.

Side note, if you haven't seen the 30 for 30 on the XFL - do yourself a favor and watch it. It is excellent.

But it does show that the league wasn't far away from some level of success IMO.

I am friends with a guy who was an ref for the XFL. He said a guy would do something and they would have to have meetings on the spot to see if the guy broke the rules. He said in the ref huddle one ref would say "Well what do you think Vince would want". Then they would just decide right there if a rule had been broke. Usually they would say no.

We need this to happen again.

Just saw the 30 for 30 last night. Interesting as always.

It sounds like this scene wasn't exactly planned or at least Matt Vasgersian wasn't aware it was going to happen.

I forgot just how awful the coverage was once the ratings cratered and they went full WWF

Didn't pretty much all of the owners lose money the last time around?

I understand trying to get into the market, but I have a sinking suspicion that this will bomb after a season or so.

Gimmicks are the only thing I liked about the original. No gimmicks = boring minor league football with worse athletes than top 25 college.

No more "He Hate Me" jerseys...unless they have some Nazi gestapo clearing them to make sure no statements are being made.

January 2020

Features of Returning XFL
• 8 teams to start

• 40 man rosters

• 10-game season beginning in January

• Two-hour game-time goal

• Any player with a criminal record precluded from playing

• Players won't receive forum to take personal stance on social issues on playing field

No criminal records? Soooo, how are they going to get 400 players worth a **** with 0 criminal records?

Yeah, something tells me that's going to be the first rule to go. Vince apparently went out of his way to say that even if you get a DUI, you are not eligible. That's a big mistake on his part. Cast offs are going to need to be a big part of this league if it's going to succeed. Guys the NFL didn't want. It's never going to make it if every player has to have a spotless record. I'm guessing that this rule will be relaxed.

Rule change: Only players with criminal records are allowed to play in the league.

If they are smart, which is debatable, they will get the best talent they can get. Period.

They also need to embrace alternative styles of football. Get Tim Tebow out there running the option or have a tam go 5 wide the whole game.

I don't get why people think there is some competitive void this is filling. How many times do these leagues need to fail to prove otherwise?

Taking a shallow talent pool, shrinking it further with unnecessary rules, and then adding a failed brand to it. Nobody wants to watch crappy football.

I think Omaha would be a potential spot for a team. I wish the XFL serves as a more serious league that falls between college and nfl level
This is where I would go. Target competition with the NCAA. Offer high school kids money to play and train full time for a few years to get ready for the NFL draft. Take kids from college who flunk out, get suspended, need to transfer for a year before the draft, etc.

That's the brass tacks. If the football is crappy, no one will watch, in the longterm. The hype and novelty will garner viewers initially, but that doesn't last unless the product is good.

And yet people show up for Browns games every weekend.

The player talent is undoubtedly out there between NFL castoffs, college washouts and high schoolers who'd prefer to get paid over going to college. Realistically, the players' salaries don't have to be outrageous as there's not a lot of competition unless they're trying to go head to head with the NFL out of the gate. That, though, would just be dumb dumb dumb.

The real issue is going to be attracting and retaining competent coaching talent from the head coaches on down. Unless they're able to pay competitively with the NCAA and NFL, as well as provide facilities on par, it's going to be tough. If the coaches are sub-standard, the product will be sub-standard regardless of the players' talent level.

The novelty aspects will appeal to WWE fans, but comes off as schlockey to everyone else. If the football sucks, you're audience is WWE fans, which is not broad enough to generate the revenue needed to support a football league.

Here my thing about underclassmen and high school players looking to skip college. Consider a few scenarios:
5 star kid spurns college and goes straight to the XFL. Gets paid some money while he works hard to make it to the NFL one day for a big pay day. Good for him right? But what happens the next season when ratings are down and the XFL folds? This kid took money and has an agent, and now he's ineligible for the NCAA and can't play in the NFL for a year or two. What does he do now?

Or, the same 5 star kid, HS or college drop out, takes the money for the XFL, hoping to make it to the NFL in a few years. Gets the money, parties, gets a DUI, and is kicked out of the league according to the rules Vince just sited. He better hope that money holds out until he hopefully gets a combine invite.

Here's another one. HS kid is all world in HS. Goes to the XFL, playing against 26 year old men. Because he's an undeveloped 18 year old, he struggles and gets cut from the already small 40 man roster. He might have been an NFL draft pick if he developed for a few years in college. We'll never know. Same issue if this underdeveloped kid gets hurt his first game in the XFL. Could he have made it if he played against college talent for a few years?

I would hope most HS talents would hold out a year or two to make sure the XFL is around for at least a while, but you know some kids wont.

I think the Nighthawks had a decent following.

They sold out games in Rosenblatt. Possibly due to it being the last sporting events to be played there. Nostalgia? People parked all over hell and walked in to Rosenblatt. The following year when it moved downtown, it bombed, however tickets were at least 30 bucks a game if not 40 for the cheap seats if I recall right.
