XFL Round 2?

I have a beat to hell XFL shirt from the first collapse of the league.

Still wear it, but it obviously won't be as cool with the league back. Maybe I'll buy some USFL gear to stay ahead of the pack

Yeah honestly with the NFL crapping itself all the time. People are looking for other options. I doubt it works because Vince is more entertainment than substance.

If they had enough money to get some big name washed out QB's it could be interesting.

Johnny Manziel
RG3
Tim Tebow
Colin Kaepernick

Too bad this can never last. It would be great if Des Moines had XFL and MLS and built football/ soccer/ outdoor music venue

I think there's room in the market for this if it's done right. First, spring/summer football makes the most sense. Taking on the NFL directly is suicidal. For historical perspective, the USFL was doing pretty well until...well...not to get political...but until Donnie bought the NJ team, ignored the salary cap, convinced the other owners to move to a fall schedule and sue the NFL. Those moves bankrupted the league, but they did win the lawsuit!

Second, it needs to be more football, less sideshow like the original XFL was. The football was pretty terrible, and the sideline antics wore thin very quickly. This includes trying to amp up and make the game more violent. There is a certain demographic that loves this sort of thing, and it's exactly the size of the audience that watches WWE. Feilding a football league is infinitely more expensive than wrestling so that audience needs to grow.

Third, the coaching has to be solid. That's going to be the biggest obstacle, in my opinion. There's plenty of player talent out there that falls between the College and NFL ranks.

This is why it's destined to fail. A leopard can't change its spots. McMahon is going to ramp up the violence and brutality and position the league as "real old school American" football. People might watch for a while and then realize that it's just not a very good product.

This will invariably be part of the new league, and also one of its biggest risks. One of the common knocks about the NFL is that "they're making it like flag football!" which may or may not be a legitimate gripe. But, for a fledgling league, that's likely going to be scrambling for talented players, allowing for a more violent game makes injuries more likely, which in turn, means that the talent pool gets even shallower.

They've got to be hoping for an NFL lockout. That would be a massive opportunity. The NFL of today is nothing like the NFL of 1983. It was still big back then, but nothing like the Goliath that it's become. The XFL has a tough row to hoe if it wants to be successful.

If the players have leather helmets I'll tune in for at least a week or two.

Sometimes, I wonder if Vince McMahon even knows the violence in WWE is pretend while the violence in football is very much not.

The NFL is a goliath because of the appetite for football is huge. Between college and the NFL, the buffet is open from August to February. Any startup league is going to have to go where those two are not, which is the back half of February through Mid-August or so.
