Wrestling Rankings 23-24

I was pleased to see that Will and Evan didn't dive too badly in the rankings. Both with strong bids in place for good seedings and the podium.

In other rankings - Comacho at 125 all the way down to 17 and Cole Matthews dropped at 141 all the way down to 26. Woof!

Good news for AE is he will get a chance to improve his ranking against Oklahoma State (ranked 8th), Northern Iowa (9th), and Oklahoma (10th) before the big 12s. I don't disagree with his ranking at this point (if he had beat Happel, he'd be top 10 right now), but it is clear his ceiling is very high in March
100%

Ranking is as good as can be expected. His best win is Cornella who’s taken some lumps recently.

That said, he does look much better than 14th to me, but those top 10 guys are going to be tough. Schwartz from OU will be a great test because he’s a lengthy scrambler and good on top. He poses unique folkstyle challenges.

I wish we went to regional qualifiers and got rid of the at large berths. Maybe 4 qualifiers and top 8 make NCAA or something like that. I hate it when top guys step on the mat and injury default and he gets an At large berth and everyone is trying to decide how to seed that guy at NCAA.

I hear what you're saying but I like the fact that someone (like David Carr) can earn his way based upon his season on work. Imagine if he came down with the flu and losses his opportunity to even go to nationals. Today's rules protect against that. I understand that some will have serious injuries and won't recover by nationals but they have earned a chance IMO. I also like that it counts as a loss and effects their seed at nationals.

Something’s gotta change. There’s a lot screwed up with college wrestling that goes even beyond this mess. But the personalities and egos involved are never going to agree to anything which really sucks.

Not to state the obvious here, but man the bloodround in march is going to be absolutely huge in determining whether we are a top 5 team or 10-15 team. Half of our team ranked in the 7-12 range!

I wouldn’t read too much into the 141 - 157 rankings. ISU wrestlers could all be wrestling in the lime light on Friday night.

I remember quarters always going poorly for Iowa State during the Cael years, but we always had (what seemed to be) at least half our lineup wrestling in the quarters. This could be the first year since Cael where we have 5-6 guys going in the quarters. Friday morning could be the biggest round as far as being a top 5 team vs Friday nights blood round
