Obviously just a hypothetical but:

- TJ head coach (defense oriented)
- Fran asst coach (offense oriented)

Fran can coach offense like a sonofabitch. TJ can coach defense like a sonofabitch. Fran can yell at the refs to keep them honest. TJ can recruit athletes beyond Fran’s wildest dreams.

Would it work?

How many kids does Fran have left?

No...the end.

At risk of throwing another tire on the fire… there’s pretty good evidence from the SDSU days that TJ can coach a good offense, and I’m expecting a lot more points next year. The last two years have been low scoring… because he’s a good coach that tailors his system/strategy to the players that he has.

And to how you're going to win a bit in the current era of the conference.

That would be weirdly interesting but I can't imagine Fran would be ok with not being the head guy. If Iowa decided they were done with him he would either retire or go back and be a head coach at some mid major.

I'll bite. Besides the clash of personalities, it wouldn't work. Iowa plays fast so that means more possessions for both teams; Iowa State is the opposite. Adjusted offense and defense might improve for both, but it would be tough since you're asking players to go hard on both ends of the floor all game.

Is getting fouled 60 times a game and playing Rutgers and Nebraska level competition being offensive minded now?

Frans offense works because they play no defense. The second an opponent's shot goes up his team is sprinting down the floor to get fast break points. They rest on defense so they can run on offense. It isn't the ability to coach, it's a philosophy that just isn't compatible.
