Worst Iowa State Team Ever?

Pretty much most of the early 90's. The end of the Walden years and beginning of Coach Mac's Era.
2003 was way worse. Not even competitive in any conference game. The saddest thing about 2003 was that in conference games our highest point total was 21, and the fewest we gave up was 24. Our last five games combined we scored 14 points. Smallest margin of defeat was 21. We could get beat by 50 these last three games and not be as bad as 2003.
I'm not sure its that bad, but the fact that someone asked and I bothered to click the post is deeply depressing. There has been a ton of suck at ISU in its football history, so being historically bad would be really, really pathetic.
1-11? Clones were TIED with Iowa 17-17 when Kirk called timeout! Not like Iowa State was trying to TIE the game!
I agree. Anyone here around in those days only had to look at the U of Iowa and how much bigger they looked than us.
I remember the Jim Walden Show aired on Sunday night after a game. They would show a taped segment from practice, where the players in a position group would each run up to coach Walden and were introduced... typically a Def. End that looked 6'3" and 190 lbs.
I heard during the latter dark years Walden would call Omaha high school coaches during the Spring--wondering if they had any players who might be interested in ISU lmao
1994, 0-10-1, couldn't beat Drake or UNI that year; could only tie a bad OSU FB team; that was the "worst team ever" in my lifetime.
To be fair, we didn't play Drake. We did however, lose to UNI, Western Michigan, and everyone but OSU.
LB talent is the worst I've ever seen at ISU. Overall defense is close to there. There are a couple young DBs who I think can play, that's the only saving grace.
On offense, hard to get excited about any young talent except at WR. Need to plan to air it out next year.
This team isn't nearly as bad as some other ISU teams. Too many injuries with no depth or they would be okay.
At least McFarland's teams had good to decent OL's. Put Sam, Lazard, Bundrage, Bibbs behind that OL and a decent play caller, and you would have a pretty stout offense. Say what you want about MM, but his play calling is hamstrung by an OL that cannot consistently run the ball. He didn't recruit any of these guys.
Also realize that comment was made in 2013. Regardless, we still look as bad as 2008.
At least we were 6-5 in 88 or 89? Those teams had good OL, TE and RB's and LB's, but no depth on the DL (or size) and the OU and Nebraska wishbones destroyed us on ball control alone. But there was talent on those offenses (Blaise Bryant, Sims, Busch) just not enough talent at QB and WR to take them over the top. But at least we could run the ball. And would have been bowl eligible had that team played 10 years later. After that, the team started a gradual descent that took DMac years to recover from.
I don't get this, other than maybe the WR/TE group I'm not seeing much to work with. I'd say the defensive side of the ball has less talent that we've seen in years.
With the addition of all the extra bowl games, a bad season in the 80's became a season good enough to warrant handing out decade long contract extensions. We even have an extra game now to earn bowl eligibility. I don't think its fair for people to compare the CPR era to the Walden and Criner years, its apples to oranges. The CPR era is essentially just as bad as the Walden years, they just give out bowl games much easier now.
