Woodworkers Thread

Well all the router talk made me pick up one of these. Got it off my FIL that used it for one job, one time. I’ve only done a couple test zips with it but it’s soooo much easier to maneuver than my big one. The only bad part is I picked up more bits with 1/2 inch shanks than I probably should have. Now I’m going to have to buys bits I already have with 1/4 inch shanks on them.

Didn't this come with an adapter (collet) that will allow you to use either 1/4" or 1/2" shank bits? Before buying new 1/2" bits, be sure to check this out.

I shop there too, a lot. And I want them to stay open. But I can’t justify some of their prices. I’m not rich or even well off, so if I can save $30 on the exact same product I will. I buy specialty saw blades there, some jig parts, way too much wood, and bought my saw stop and Laguna bandsaw there. But if I’m a beginning wood worker trying to set up or stock a shop and money is an issue, I’m looking at other options too.

I want the store to stay around, so I buy as much as possible keeping competitive options in mind. I think they're good on most major tools like routers, router tables, Kreg stuff, even up to table saws, joiners, etc. Most of the sales guys can give you some pretty good objective advice on this stuff. Unless it's something specifically only available there, I go to the big box stores for most hardware. I buy very little lumber or hard wood there.

How many of you are members of the Des Moines Woodworkers Club? Is it worth joining? Is it a good club for what they would call intermediate level woodworkers like myself?
I am. Discounts are nice and so are the emails. Sometimes with the emails you'll get some unique/specialty stuff pop up like kiln dried lumber, dove tail jigs, etc.

Any recommendations on adjustable saw horses? These will likely be passed around the family and need to be usable for a 5'7" user and a 6'3" user ideally. Less expensive the better (obviously) but not looking for a cheap product and I think these would be decently used

I have these and really like them.

I’ve got these and they work really well. The same setup is available in different brands. I’m 6’6” and they’re a comfortable height but they’re adjustable. You can run two 2x4s in the slots down each side and it makes a great bench with a 4x8 sheet of OSB/Ply that won’t sag. The legs fold up in the top for storage.

I assume you have them set to the highest (32 inch) setting when working? Any issues with flimsy legs at full extension?

Correct. I primarily use them with the 2x4 runners and a 4x8 sheet in the middle of the garage. They’re solid.

Been working on some shop storage today. I built the cabinets last year at winter break but I’ve been putting off buying the drawer slides. I got a 20 pack and got to work this morning. I’m going to try and finish them up this weekend.

This will be my Christmas break. Gonna build about 16 LF of cabinetry in my garage shop for storage. Dammit plywood is expensive right now!

That’s no ****. I’m building some built ins for my parents remodel and the woodsmith store wanted 90-100 bucks a sheet. I have an 18ft bench mostly made of ply and I think I spend maybe 45 bucks a sheet on it a few years ago.

I ended up getting my ply from Home Depot for 60 bucks a sheet and while it’s not as good as the stuff from the woodsmith store, it’s a lot better than the stuff from Menards.

I am loosely following The Wood Whisperers design for mine. I originally priced it all out with birch ply. I downgraded to ACX, then BCX, and now some of it is sheathing. Even then, it’s still over $500 just in wood for shop cabinets. Like you, I remember when a nice sheet was $45, not $65.

Lucky for me other than the slides I’m making a whole bunch of these drawers with leftover plywood from other projects. I did have to go buy a sheet 1/2” for the sides but this is helping me burn through a whole bunch of odds and ends.

*Gasp*... quarter sawed oak in your shop? Pampered.
I grew up working in the family sawmill. We cut barrel staves so I have access to a ton of quarter sawn oak. Grandpa is retired and sold all of the equipment out of the mill but the building is still there and there are 4 stacks of reject barrel staves still sitting there. I always grab a half a truck load when I go home. I had it, so I used it. My workbench is made from it too. Once you clean the raccoon crap off of it you can get some nice looking boards out of it. The only problem is nothing is longer than 40" and it's all pretty skinny, 4" wide at the most. First world problems I know.

You guys getting after it are gonna make me finally make a table I’ve been putting off while I have some time off over the holidays. I only got half of the material sanded and now it’s so damn cold to do it outside. The old lady isn’t gonna like it if I sand the rest down in the garage....

I'm only teasing, it's just jealousy. I've got a bunch of white oak from this horse barn down in Florida that I've been carrying all over God's green Earth until I have time to use it. Might make myself a dresser.
