Williams & Blum: All eyes on March

Hate to burst your bubble here but isn’t old rip can winkle different from pappy? I haven’t had either so I could be wrong.

Pappy is way to expensive for my blood. Kinda like equating silver and gold price wise. Both are nice, but one is much more expensive.

Is Pappy worth it? I usually stick in the Buffalo Trace/ Knob Creeks of the world, but I splurged and bought a bottle of Blantons. Tbh I was pretty underwhelmed. Is Pappy that much better to justify the cost?

I've never tried Pappy but I've splurged for a couple $90-$100 bottles of whiskey and didn't really find them to be any better than stuff in the $40-$60 range that I usually go with. Maybe I just don't have a sophisticated palette? I'm guessing Pappy is really good but I'm sure for most of us average whiskey drinkers it's not "worth it". Don't get me wrong, for $36 I'd absolutely try it. I want to know what bar they were at up here.

hence my request for clarification between Pappy and ORVW

Blanton's is overrated.
When you buy Pappy, you're buying the whole experience and mystique and exclusiveness and prestige. No, the whiskey is not 50x better, but it sure is fun to drink and it is certainly good.

Was at the Westin Resort in Scottsdale AZ a few weeks ago- they have a bourbon bar there with a ton of hard to find stuff. I wanna say that they had 12 year Pappy for $375 a pour.

I’ve been to a couple hotels with really nice whiskey collections, one in Frankfurt in particular. Makes sense with business travel and the budget from a big corporate hotel chain. It’s not as big of a risk to them then a local bar or restaurant.

Pappy is 15, 20 and 23. Old Rip Van Winkle is still from the Van Winkle family in a partnership with Buffalo Trace. It’s still super rare. I have a 10 and a 12 year from 2013 that I haven’t opened.

I was told by a whiskey distiller that once you get past 12 years on a bourbon it really isn't worth it. Because of where bourbon's are made there isn't going to be any difference really in the whiskey beyond those years. It isn't like Scotch where because of the temps you can age it much longer. So what you are really paying for in those older expensive Pappy's is the name and rarity not for the quality of whiskey.

I’ve had it recently as well. The bottle I had looked like this. I think this was “fairly” priced as well. 20 yr Pappy was $30 for 1.5 oz . I also can’t say I have the most refined palette.. but I prefer cheaper bourbon to this.

I'll trade you two bottles of Wild Turkey for any of those you have lying around. Heck, I might even give you three! :jimlad:

I love how this turned into a bourbon thread!!

(this is a portion of my "Tater shelf", minus the multiple bottles of Blanton's...)

Can you please provide hotel name? I’ll be in Frankfurt mid March.

I think it was the airport Hilton. It was shocking some of the bottles they had on display behind a cage around the bar. If you’re looking for a charming place I’d do some research. It just stood out to me that a hotel bar had such a nice collection.
