CW and BB,

Just wanted to say your last podcast was spot on. In your podcast you said how people are rooting for TJ Otzelberger to fail so they are proved right. I think this was the same thing that some people were hoping for after Fred left and we hired Steve Prohm.

It is my belief that even though we always want to speculate on coaching searches and who might be the candidate. I think TJ Otzelberger has as much of a chance of succeeding as any other mid-major coach we would have hired. There was no guarantee coaches like Archie Miller (fired), Will Wade (cheater), Fran McCaffery, or Nate Oats would succeed when they got jobs in power conferences. I think he wants to be here and can recruit, so now it is up to him to figure out what other areas of his coaching staff need to be shored up to develop and unlock the potential of these recruits. The X's and O's will be another part of the equation.

With the transfers out of the program, I wish them well and you never like to see them, but we need to realize that this is common all over college basketball and also would really want some players who might not fit what you are hoping to build taking up a roster spot when you can use the scholarships on a transfer here and there and have those scholarships available for '22 and '23 recruits. I have faith that he knows what he is doing and I am more optimistic than I was before the process started. Can't wait to see what the future holds!

Fun podcast. As usual. Nice to hear the guys going at it pretty much like usual. Having TJ as their friend is clearly a big net positive for us.

P.S. Checking in as a CyclonePanther fan.

I'll admit I haven't dove too deeply in the dozens of TJ threads, but is there actually anyone "rooting for him to fail"? That seems a bit hyperbolic to me. Having concerns about his coaching record does not equate to "man I hope this guy does miserably here so we can run him off as quickly as possible."

This is one thing about this fanbase that can drive me nuts. It seems to me things are very binary around here. You are either "for" or "against" something without much room for nuance. It's possible to be very much in favor of TJ having success here, while not being too thrilled about the way the search went, and I can't quite figure out why that's so hard to understand.

I think TJ is a great hire and will do well at ISU. Great fit for us.

I have seen no one hoping he fails. Apparently no one can question the hiring of their buddy

He has a lot of friends and people who perceive themselves to be his friends, kinda like Rhoads.
They're pretty hyper-sensitive.

No one was rooting against Steve Prohm, he was literally talking about building relationships the whole first year when we had generational players that were in there last year, there should have been urgency to get those guys to a final 4.

And TJ has been quoted that his offense is better in transition than half court, that is a sure way that you will not win regular season championships and you will generally be eliminated by sharp coaches who have really good half court set teams in the tourney.

The Big 12 is horrible in half court sets and impatient, and I suspect TJ teams will do the same thing and find the same pitfalls as Hoiberg teams, too dependent on 3 point shooting, poor team when the momentum goes against you in crunch time.

So if TJ does not learn how to play fast and slow, he will doom himself, I dont need to root for or against to effect the outcome.

Saw what coming? I am not trying to start another message board post trying to get into the mud and negative. Just say for all the people who were against this hire to just keep an open mind.

I really enjoy the podcasts going into TJ’s background and getting more insight into who he is and what he can potentially do as our head coach.

I definitely am one that has been vocal about how this hire went down, but to say I am actively rooting against him is laughable, and I haven't seen or talked to anyone that is. Of course we want him to succeed! Sad this is how Chris sees Cyclone fans

Wasn’t talking about you.

Start at 2:10, he tells you actually the problem we are going to have, dont expect final 4s unless we can assemble a roster like 2014.

Attended a few home UNI men's basketball games in early 2020 and will stream them if I'm available, but it's not appointment viewing like ISU football and the basketball teams.

I recently described myself as 99.9% ISU fan and .1% UNI to someone I know that closely follows ISU and UNI football.
Really, that is the only other person I know in the area that supports Iowa State. Everyone else, if they watch sports at all, is a gear-wearing Hawkeye fan. The other day I had an Iowa State pullover on when I stepped in a shop. The guy working commented something like "You're the 2nd person I've seen wearing Iowa State today. What's the deal? Is something going on?"

And Cedar Falls is basically equidistant from Ames and Iowa City. It's bizarre.

I’m sorry that Chris thinks anyone who was not jumping up and down about this hire is rooting against him. And I’ll add that I have not listened to the podcast so I’m going on the original poster’s summary.

Maybe Chris should take off his TJ glasses and ask himself if another team he liked, say the Vikings, hired someone with a mediocre record in euro football and was told that the editor of the star tribune is friends with him so don’t question it.

What Chris fails to realize is that most of us don’t know TJ. We also don’t know Chris. So when Chris tells us to just trust him TJ is the best coach in the world, all we see is someone sticking up for his friend.

I will be cheering hard for TJ. I think he’s made some good moves so far. I still have questions. AS I WOULD WITH ANY COACH. But I guess that’s not acceptable now.

The other thing I’ll add is that the way to satisfy those of us who weren’t 100% on board isn’t to tell us that our questions are invalid. It’s to let TJs work speak for itself.

I wasn’t posting this to have people blast CW or BB, just that their podcasts are refreshing to help us get familiar with our new hire.

When you really look at new coaching hires, most coaches get plucked from mid major jobs. You don’t see a lot of coaches jump from high major to high major unless it is a blue blood. It happens but not that often in my opinion
