Yeah I mean who was that Von Miller guy anyways.
This type of stuff is funny to me. Everyone was pissed when Hakeem Slid, When Lazard did not get drafted. Now we have a shocker in the top 10

It's easy to see why he gets paid to make nonsensical predictions that mean nothing.
The snippet said "no one was stuck out of position more than Will McDonald," and that it will be interesting to see at the Senior Bowl when "he's put in a position to succeed."
Sorry, that's saying he was playing out of position and not put in position to succeed. He wasn't out of position. He wasn't a 3-3 LB. He just wasn't. The staff tried that and it failed. He was "stuck out of position" to the tune of breaking the Big 12 sack record on a great defense. He wasn't out of position, he's an undersized DE, at least he was in college, and was in ISUs defense. The alternative is to change a highly successful defense, where the rest of the pieces fit just fine to suit one guy, who happens to already be breaking records.
This is something that I want to happen so I have decided its 100% legit and happening
I think more teams are starting to go to a new position for LB/Pass rusher in the NFL. Cowboys and Eagles had great success with Parsons & Reddick this last year in a position where they got moved all over the field which I think teams will look at McDonald to do similar things.
It is basically a throw back to what the Chiefs did with DT and the Falcon position.

That's the model I see for him in the NFL. He's not as elite as a Parsons, but he definitely has the potential to fill a role like that for someone.
I think a lot of teams will see him as a Parsons/Reddick clone. Add that to the fact that edge rushing is the most coveted position in the NFL draft after QB.
Well we don't have his position here so his perfect fit would have been impossible. No one said he's a 3-3 linebacker either. There is no NFL team that would even draft him as a 3-3 DE even if anyone ran that system. That's the point. It's not some indictment of ISU coaches, it's simply stating that he's not going to do what he did in college in the NFL so looking at production is nearly pointless, especially 2022 production. Sure it may help him in the sense that when you put him out there he has an inkling of what to do against the run, but when he's drafted it will be as a pure pass rusher and that's not at all what he did.
I thought he was fantastic this year, I don't know if some people aren't watching these games or have no idea what is going on. The entire offensive game plan was plan for everyone we played was built around avoiding Will and containing him. He was double and triple teamed constantly.

Look.... I hope like h*ll that Will goes in the top 10.... I really do. That would be awesome for him, and for ISU! If I were an NFL GM and my job depended on how I draft, I wouldn't take him top 10. Maybe late first round though.
We tried him at LB, and he couldn't cover and couldn't learn the concepts to playing the position. Maybe he will be able to do that in the NFL... I don't know? If he has to play DE in the NFL, it will only be on for sure passing downs... he can't play DE in the NFL against the run.
Love the kid to death, one of my favorite Cyclones ever... I just question the top 10 talk is all.

If memory serves me right, Von wasnt quite that big coming out of College.
Yeah, Von Miller measured at 246 lbs at the Combine; McDonald was 241 lbs at the Senior Bowl. Not exactly a huge difference. And frankly, McDonald has shown he's plenty strong by being able to be a true defensive end at the college level and not getting pushed around in the run game.
I do agree with @clonedude about covering though. I think that's probably more important for him really producing in the NFL since a 3-4 OLB needs to do that at least some. However, Heacock did have him drop into coverage at various points both of the last two seasons. He didn't work as a LB early in his college career, but it could just be that the combination of learning everything at once was too much and it worked better to improve as a pass rusher and run stopper, then as a guy that can drop into coverage.
McDonald kicked ass at the senior bowl. His numbers at the combine will be epic. He can jump like a frog and he's fast.
These NFL coaches just see a frame with room to add mass and he's already performing at a high rate at his current stature. Plus he broke Von Miller's sack record. That isn't unnoticed.

McDonald reminds me a lot of Richard Dent coming out of college. Both 6’4”-6’5” 240ish lbs. Neither played football until late in high school. They are both speed rushers. I see similarities in how they play, hopefully Will has as good or better of a career as Dent.
Interesting story about Dent, he was only 215 as a walk-on freshman, bad teeth made it hurt when he ate so he couldn’t gain weight. Graduated around 240 lbs. Got drafted by the bears in the 8th round, they straightened his teeth and he gained 20-30 lbs in almost no time. The rest is history.
