Why not Loney?

I just posted in a different thread...
My gut feeling is that Loney could be the best long-term solution - but - there are certainly bigger flashes in the pan that could be good in more immediate terms.

I would love to have Loney, but I think people are concerned about whether or not he can recruit. Also, he doesn't have a lot of head coaching experience. A year at Drake isn't a lot of information to determine whether or not he can actually coach.
As isufbcurt said, he is very coach to reaching the NFL coaching pension, which is a big deal in the long run and obviously important to him

I have a feeling that the NFL pension would be the last thing on his mind. If he would get this job at 1 million/year the pension thing wouldn't matter. It's my understanding that he's been in the NFL long enough that his percentage is already pretty high. From what I know of Loney (probably more than 99% of you), money would never be a factor. He is ISU 100%.
Maybe the recruiting thing would be an issue but I promise you that our offense would rock. Take a look at the offensive numbers while he was at U of Minnesota along with ISU.
In the end I don't think it matters because I think Pollard will go after a young/hot coach, which is fine.
Love Steve Loney. Think he grades out best overall for my metrics (long-termness, career progression/talent, fit w/schoo....though i hate to say 'fit' w/o thinking of Jay Jacobs).
BUT people will bag on him b/c he's not a splash hire. And, as we learned with the McCarney retrospective from JP....Jamie has to make a splash hire so we can fund the growth vision.

As a side note, I doubt if you'll find a harder working coach. I've seen his work ethic and he starts the day at 5am and usually got home around 1am and this was while he was filling in as head coach. When he was with the Vikings he would sleep in the office.
Am I wrong or isn't he "retired"?
I know people can easily unretire, but if he feels he's not up to the day-to-day grind anymore, then I certainly don't want him.

While I really like the guy and hope he is part of the staff, I don't think he is our best option at HC.
I also seem to remember he abandoned us pretty late in 2003 to go to the Vikings. Needless to say, DMac couldn't find a capable replacement and that really hurt our team.

100% loyal to his alma mater so when he starts winning he stays, that is what we need.

He left very late in the year, which really hurt his alma mater. Facts are facts. His decision was very self-serving. I don't blame him for bettering himself and taking the money, but he did take the money.
He is pretty long in the tooth too.
We went for flash...his name was Gene Chizik. Flash didn't work...we need substance. For Steve Loney, this job is not a stopping point, it's THE DESTINATION. He bleeds for this school. He was a player, and asst. coach here. He knows the landscape here, the obstacles in recruiting, and the Iowa high school coaches would have a great relationship with him. If Turner Gill turns us down, this is our man.
Very good post, I too want Loney! Patterson turned down $2 million at Minn., we can't afford him. Loney is our legacy guy, a guy with both ISU and NFL experience and our JoPa for the next 20 years.
