Why ISU lost...

I wish Scotty could have another chance at that chippy he missed on that inbound play when we were down 2. Kinda fell apart from there.

I didn't think about it, that was right before wheels started to fall off.

I felt bad for Scotty on that one — almost felt like he realized he had a better look than he expected to get, then short-armed it.

ISU's 3 point percentage: 13.6% (3-22)
Kentucky's 3 point percentage: 50.0% (10-20)

if we simply hit our average of 38% on the season we would have hit 5 more 3's. imagine having those 15 points.

granted, this isn't your typical defense we have faced most of the season. UK is long and talented and they certainly altered a lot of our 3's. guys never looked confident that they were going to get the shot off. looked like a lot of times players were falling back during their shots instead of going straight up with it.

woulda coulda shoulda

To me it really is pretty simple. It's baically just talent, and especially the speed of that talent.

1) ISU was out-rebounded by a very talented, long UK frontline.....especially in the first half.

2) ISU's 3 point shooting was off, percentage wise. This was largely due to the fact that the UK guards are talented enough, and fast enough to extend the defense out to the perimeter when necessary, and get in ISU's face. I thought that UNC's guards were as close to ISU"s guards as anyone all season. ISU just did not have the spacing or freedom of movement on the perimeter they were used to.

3) UNC had shot poorly from 3 point range the last few games....like between 20 and 25 per cent. So it was logical on ISU's part to let them have the outside. That was also true because ISU does not really have the speed in all of the guard court to extend the perimeter and get in their faces. UK had some good looks at 3 point shots, and unfortunately made 1/2 of them.

4) It was a UK crowd, obviously. Would love to have seen this game at Hilton, or even Wells Fargo. But, that is the NCAA. Want that for ISU...get a high seed and hope Hilton, Wells Fargo, KC or Omaha is a site.

After seeing numerous comments about the great defense KY played, I had to go back and see if I had just watched the wrong game. Sure enough I counted 15 open 3's and lay-ups we missed.

Give credit for KY hitting like they have not all year long. But stop with KY had anything to do with missing open shots we have hit all year long.

Exactly. The reason behind our poor shooting has alot to do with the opponent.

I think that's only part of it. Scotty and Allen missed some WIDE OPEN 3s. It's fine to say that their defense's size and talent altered shots in general, but you can't say that 100% because there were plenty of 3s that the defender didn't have a hand in the shooter's face. Had to sink the wide open ones, they didn't. Big difference in the game.

When a good 3 pt shooter is set and shoots a wide open 3, he hits it ~~40% of the time. WHen he senses he is contested AND rushed, the % drops to 20%.

The 3 point shot on the kick out from a Royce dribble to the hoop produced a wide open basket. ONE of the very few times this occured for ISU>
