Why ISU lost...

Any have said, Kentucky is just straight up better. They should be. Look at their payroll on the team.
But seriously, other than Royce, tell me who else stepped up. It seemed that Royce would bring us back and tie it up. Then when Kentucky put more focus on Royce, there was no one that could step up and hit anything. Albeit that Kentucky is very athletic and could get out and cover our guys. But still, that doesn't excuse our other big guys not being able to make open put backs or lay-ins when Royce got doubled, Ejim in particular. We did have an effort to win the game, we just didn't finish the easy plays to keep it close. Go back and look at how many easy ones we missed that turned into a bucket for Kentucky on the other end. It is hard to win a ball game when you get 4 point swings like that all over the place.
We had a great season. UNI, Drake, and Texas kept us from being a better seed. I wonder how far we could go if we had Xavier's seed. Lehigh, (which would be it) or Duke would have been a much better matchup in the second round.
Agreed, we got a terrible seed for third in the big twelve, would have been fun to play somebody other than number one on almost their home court.

If we beat Texas in the B12 tournament we're probably in a better position to make a deeper run. Although as nice as that would be, watching the beat down of Uconn in the first round almost made getting the tough draw worth it. That was nice.

They are but they're not better at 3's. Just tonight.

Depends on how you want to look at it. ISU shot 38 percent from 3 this year as a team - Kentucky 37 percent. The only significant difference is ISU took way more 3s while Kentucky was able to get more dunks/layups. Fred had to pick his poison tonight and he chose wisely IMO. Kentucky just shot lights out and made us pay.

I agree that he chose wisely. It just sucks that UK hit 50% of their treys tonight.

Kentucky couldn't MISS to save it's life. If they missed a few more of their shots, it never becomes a blowout.

The other thing that sucks about the loss to Texas still is that if we were a 7 seed, we could've been playing Lehigh or Norfolk. Not disappointed in the team, just thought of that tonight.

Totally. Iowa State played well enough to win this game. But the shots didn't fall. Even with Kentucky being so hot, ISU could have won this game if they would have also been hot. They played their *** off and they played well enough to win.

I don't know that we played well enough to win. We did give a good enough effort to get to the end with a chance.

Scotty shooting that 5 footer 2 1/2 feet on the lob, and then we missed three great looks from 3, Babb first, then two from Tyrus, if those go down, it is a completely different game.

Unfortunately, we didn't make them, and they got away from us...Still proud of the way that we competed with that team.

They were 15-64 from three their last five games. A shooting performance from them like that tonight, and we may be talking about a different outcome. Their shooting was phenomenal. Noone in the country would have played them close tonight.

About 37% i believe.

we gave kentucky all they wanted when we tied them at42-42-but how in the hell do you stay with a team that lights up the basket the second half when they shoot the lights out with their 3 point shooting. kentucky has been a great story in the college basketball world when they had a great coach named adolph rupp.calipari is a fine coach.too. mcdermott really messed up our program. b4 it is all said and done, coach fred hoiberg has got iowa state's program going in the proper direction.

I'm surprised ISU didn't get KSU's spot.
Next year we need to take Drake and UNI more seriously. Michigan should have been our only loss in nonconference. It put us in a hole and then we succumbed to an 8 seed. People who say it is only nonconference games probably remember McD years when that was the case. When you go to NCAA, they count in the realtime college RPI.

Chris Allen was the only other guy besides Royce that didn't play like he was scared ********. He was aggressive, and really tried to lead the team. I was extremely impressed with how he handled himself in the early part of the game where they jumped on us...

The only thing we could have done was tatoo Scottie and CA to their two guards. Our two guards have a tendency to play off the three point shooters. The announcers were chortling that they better step up into their faces, but we did not as we did not want to foul them. That strategy would work great against Syracuse, but we were playing three lottery pick guards tonight.

This...The lesson from this year is that we let opportunities slip away from us. The in-state games, also the Okie State game, both UT games...Take care of business in those games, and this group is getting ready to play next week...

Of course we could have easily lost to Okie State at home, and we probably should have lost to K State at least once. Things even out, but we had great opportunities that we struggled with.

It's all part of learning how to win. The program is in its infancy stages. We will win those games going forward...

That's one of the things about this season — should have won 2 or 3 additional games, but also could have lost a few that went our way.

Was going to make a thread about this, but I thought it was pretty obvious. Even if we shot our average on 3's, and Kentucky STILL shot lights out, it would have been a very close game at the end

They would have been an almost impossible matchup for anyone the way they shot tonight.

Exactly. Good forwards and their guards were making some very impressive shots. Hell, could have beaten an NBA team tonight with how they played.

If you dig a little deeper the reason why we shot so poorly was because Ashley Judd's huge puffy face blocked the view of the rim.

I'm just bitter.

I think Calipari said they make 4 threes a game. We make 9 a game and shoot 1.1% worse than them. If they shot as many 3's as we did there % would go down, the more u shoot the more likely u are to miss. Also since they don't shoot very much 3's, I assume there getting a lot better looks than us. So whoever said there a better 3point shooting team than ISU is wrong. Not that it matters, cuz they won and are the better team. just wanted to point that out.

I wish Scotty could have another chance at that chippy he missed on that inbound play when we were down 2. Kinda fell apart from there.

Many posters are pointing to the 3pt shooting as ISU's downfall, which certainly played a part, but ISU also missed a number of close shots around the basket that could have helped slow UK's momentum/fast break. Something to work on for next year.

They did, though I think the Eyebrow had something to do with that. A couple of those shots were very unnatural, and I'm sure the shot blockers of Kentucky had something to do with it.
