Why Don’t We Run Outside?

Throughout the last few games, we have had little success with the inside runs. Why don’t we run outside? If we give Montgomery the ball outside, that opens things up a little bit and allows him to run through the smaller defensive backs if he can get into the open field.

Because they’re harder for the Olinemen to block, whereas our WRs are good blockers so we pass for our outside runs.
The runs in the middle are as much about setting things up and keeping teams honest imo.

Completely agree. Whenever we run that option pitch play to the outside, we usually gain 8+ yds.... but we never ran it once yesterday.

You have to keep the defense honest and at least threaten the edges once in a while. I feel terrible for Montgomery having to run into a wall on every play and then bust it outside because nothing is there.

OSU was cheating that play yesterday. They generally had someone lined up just outside the tackle on the strong side of the formation.

That's even more embarrassing then that we can't pin that guy to the outside and run just inside of him then. They were only rushing 3 all day.

May be they are saving it until they really need it? :)

Where have you been all year? These guys are working, but yes, we’re a good offensive line from being very good. That said I don’t think they get a ton of help when Kempt was limited to a compressed field, and we probably don’t have enough counters off our run plays.

The drop off from Meeker to Foster has been palpable. Foster seems like he needs another season or two to cleanup his technique because he hasn't been good at either run or pass blocking.

He’s been inconsistent to say the least. He doesn’t need two years though, he’s closer than that imo. Just two games in as a redshirt freshman he’ll improve quickly. With this experience and another offseason of S&C and he’ll be significantly better imo. Hopefully Meeker is back to get bowl reps so he’s improving for next year, too.
