Why do we not recruit small speedy WRs?

Out of all our problems, that seems like the least important thing to worry about.

You can be successful with small or tall receivers – you recruit the best you can find/get. If there are two receivers of equal speed, athleticism, hands, and skill and I could only take one, I’d take the taller one 10/10 times. It gives a bigger target, more mismatches against defenses, and usually longer wingspan.

Unfortunately, we’ve struck out on most of our top tier and second tier WR targets over the past several years, both short and tall. Combined with the lack of development in that position, our only real success has been with transfers (absent AL). I’m more concerned about having more than one capable receiver each year than I am with their size.

In the past, we've had TEs operating in many of the areas a smaller, slot receiver would. Now the TE production dipping some easily, I can see the concern of needing someone open for those short/intermediate routes, especially with a bad line. But I think with our offensive makeup the answer probably comes in better TE play.

We have lacked guys who are good route runners and can generate separation.. The best separator we've had in the CMC era is Kolar.

Speed is great but I'd rather have a team of Chris Carter's than a team of Troy Williamson's (Vikings reference)

Jarvis West was a small speedy receiver. Unfortunately all it took to stop him was a light breeze of wind.

Give me the Lazard, Butler, Pettway, Eaton, Murdock types all day long.

I remember CW saying Campbell described the overall offensive scheme as a Power Spread, if he had to give it a name.

.... which is why our offense has sucked so bad under Campbell. "Power" and "Spread" are two different concepts.

But maybe it was Campbell's way of telling the person absolutely nothing... like he usually does.

Right... "sucked so bad under Campbell" that he has a handful of the top offenses we've ever had. Tell me you're a pessimist without telling me you're a pessimist.

I was just going to say, saying the offense has sucked so bad is extreme recency bias. They were quite bad last year, but even last year were better than a majority of the offenses Rhoads trotted out during his campaign. Campbell era has been the best offensive era of football in Cyclone history. The number of offensive records set and offensive skill position players getting drafted and making an impact in the NFL should speak for itself.

I'm a pessimist. There, I said it. Not that hard.

JLH is 5'2" and looks to be getting in shape for football season.

What's your definition of a good offense at ISU with the overall roster?

Numbers and statistics don't really mean all that much IMO. They are one indicator, but not everything.

I would just like it if the offense wasn't the side of the ball that held us back so much every year from being the team we could be. There are 3 phases of the game, and we've generally only been decent at one of the three.... defense. Offense and ST have held us back big time.

What kind of team are you expecting out of ISU?

2021 was a letdown but was also the flip side of breaks that ISU got the year prior.

I remember the good old days during Mac and Rhoads era when we threw corner fade routes to our 5' 10" receivers in the end zone. Those plays always worked well.
